I use a lot of hair jigs but I don't add any feathers to them.  I use them for walleye and sandies mostly.

I see the Green Pumpkin one was out of focus, better image in the shot by itself - these are the only rabbit strip ones I'm tying now, in a bunch of different combination's. Actually rabbit strip and palmered hackle collar, with silicone skirt and flashabou accents.

Why the big weed guard?  And the flipping jig head?

You really use that for smallies?

I should have put something in the shot for scale - those are 3/16th ounce jigs with 20 strand weed-guards, they are about as long as my middle finger.

They look nice.  I'd rather the line tie be at a 90° with a ballhead, and can do without the weed guard.  Zebes to contend with.....

You make any in a 3/4 to 1-1/4 weight?  In black?  Pure destruction on pike up here.

Yeah you guys have different needs for jigs, mine are tied for shallow rocky streams here the Ozarks, or for swimming around timber and dock structures at Table Rock or Beaver - that's why the weed-guard.

I still need to do a shot for scale, I look at those pictures and yes, it does look like they're for Pike!

There - fixed with an XRap 08, Husky Jerk 10, and XCalibur XS4 for scale.

Question. I don't know anything about hair jigs so, do you put a trailer on these or just fish them straight up??? I'm looking to do some New River smallmouth fishing in a couple months and I'm starting to do a little research.

Are hair jigs only better in winter months or are they also better for the summer months?

Both ways work.  I put trailers on mine, a small split tail, to add more weight, but keep the sink rate like I like it, but hair jigs, even with a short tail with catch them without a trailer. In colder waters for smallies, it's finding the deeper waters out of the faster current if the water temps are below 50.  That's really the key more than the jig itself.

In warmer waters, more anglers go to soft plastics or rubber or silicone tied jigs. But hair jigs will work all year long.
