Shimano Cardiff A Series

Featured Replies

Need a reel for my new Compre. I currently fish an Ambassador 6501C3 and a Browning Citori (both round reels) and really like them so I might go that route again. I'd like to hear opinions about the Cardiff from those who've had experience with them.

I realize they're not top shelf and may be able to step up a bit but I'd still appreciate the input. Thanks

Great reels for the money. Very sturdy, durable, and easy to maintain.

I have a 301A. It is a solid reel and a great deal at its price point. In my hands, and as an owner of an abu round reel which I also love, the feel of the cardiff just seems more refined over the abu g.

I have both the 200 and 300 and absolutely love them. You will not go wrong if you decide to pick one up.

I've got 2 of them and they are very nice reels but don't have a need for them anymore. Too bad you're a lefty or I could set you up with the newer one for cheap!

I've got a Cardiff 200 that I throw swimbaits with and use for saltwater applications. Great reels. Strong, built like tanks, super easy to take care of. The only complaint that I have with them is that you need to remove the entire handle plate to access the VBS.

Thanks everyone for the input. Considering I said "I realize it's not top shelf" and still to get not one negetive comment (side plate is minor, but, yes good to know going in. Thanks S-F B/A), I'm taking it as being an older proven work horse and that's the type of products I like.

B-B86, obviously you are up to speed on the reel specs, I new I hadn't mentioned about left/right retrieve but then remember I did put the abu model number. Good catch, wish we could do business.

I have 2 Cardiff’s 100s and 3 Calcutta’s (2 100s & a 50)

The only difference between the two is the Calcutta is Cold Forged Aluminum and the Cardiff is One-piece Diecast Aluminum. Neither process is stronger than the other, one is simply less expensive to manufacture. The Calcutta has 3 A-RB Ball Bearings & 1 A-RB Roller Bearing while the Cardiff has 4 A-RB Ball Bearings & 1 A-RB Roller Bearing.

As for cast ability both are pretty close to similar ;)
