Mosquito Repellant (What Works Best)

Recommended Posts

I am a member of an outdoors club that contains 3 nice size ponds full of bass and I have a small jon boat, but I usually do most of my fishing from shore. I am trying to find an effective mosquito repellant. Also I'm not talking about that industrial strength, chemical burn your skin, type of repellant.

Off works for me. You just have to remember to bring it which I can't seem to do.

I like the Cutter Outdoorsman with Deet that they sell at my local Walmart, but it's kinda oily and will leave slight oil stains on your clothes, so it's best to have a fishing shirt if you're going to use the stuff. Works great for deer flies.

I don't get bitten too often for some reason, but my kids get devoured when we go out. Avon Skin So Soft works very well, isn't dangerous to kids (Deet), and smells nice. Have your wife or girlfriend pick a bottle up.

Since my deer archery days I use only 100% Deet but apply it sparingly as needed (focus on active ingredients not brand).

Thermacell is the best thing on the market. This time of year I don't go fishing in the evening without it. The best thing is you don't have to put anything on your skin.

Off with Deet in it. I got ate up a week ago,Spray that OFF on and they stayed away. I always have a can in my back pack.It stays in it's own pocket I have just for that.

I seen guys get to a spot then right away leave because it was so bad.

Try to keep it away from lures though, even though I never put it to test, but people have told me It turns fish away from your lures as well.Fish don't like the stuff either.

Thermacell do work well...if its real windy not so much. I wont go hunting with out one..I don't usually get bit up on the boat so no need for me to use while fishing.

If it's real windy, mosquitos shouldn't be too much of an issue anyway...

At trolling motor speeds is the thermacell effective?

Eat garlic! That'll 'lic up yer blood and give you a case of the skunk farts. Rub some Megastrike Garlic on your skin too. jk. ;)

Other than that I use Off.

I use either Cutter's or Deep Woods Off lotion, not the spray.

Problem around here isn't the mosquitoes, it's the gnats. The only thing I've found that works half decent for both is that Cutter Advanced spray stuff.

I appreciate all the quick replies and I'll decide on one of the many options that are available

When duck hunting or fishing at night in South Florida I use 3M's Ultrathon repellent and Thermacell. I put the thermacell within arms reach and upwind of me and apply 3M Ultrathon to exposed skin.

For Gnats try vanilla extract....works great for me.

Thermacell is great. Just light them off before you are covered up in skeeters. I keep 2 in my john boat. Works great trolling around. As mentioned earlier wind will move away the protection, and the mosquitos.

Rob YMMV

Wrong! Sorry.....not the best thing on the market. :) It works fine IF you are NOT moving. But on shore (or in a moving boat), if you move 3' away, your protection is gone. It has to re-build it's repellency shield around you while you are stationary, once you stop moving. And it has no effectiveness against ticks.

I've been experimenting with these things (clip-ons) the past couple of weeks in mosquito infested backwaters (fishing from shore), so what I'm telling you is true - based on my experience only, of course! 100% Deet (lotion) is the only scientifically proven personal mosquito repellent on the market, that works. Put on your socks and legs, it effectively repels ticks as well. The whole clip-on idea is great, but it has it's limitations.

Agreed

If you are moving, the thermacell isn't for you. But bank fishing or hunting out of a blind it is very effective with minimal winds.

100% deet is great as long as it doesn't cause four eyeballs in your offspring.... :) Then again, what better to see you with

Supposedly Bass absoluely detest Deet and can detect it in very small concentrations......
