Saw these on TW today. They sure look sleek but I hated the Skeet Reese rods they offer. They have a good selection of square bill rods in this series which is cool. I guess I missed the video of these at ICAST. Anyone going to try one of these?

I got my first good look at a Skeet Reese rod the other day. The rod felt OK, but it sure didn't feel like $90 to me. I guess it's designed to feel that way, but it hardly had any backbone at all. The line guides were rough on it also. I was not impressed. If this is what I can expect from Wright and McGill then I won't be trying one of these either.

So does that mean in your thought that Clunn may have took a step backwards from the BPS RCX or still to early to tell? and thanks for the input Rooster! Can you make a comparison to the Clunn version to the Skeet Reese itself?

In my thoughts, very definitely yes, he took a step backwards. BPS rods are quality. They may not be in line with a G-Loomis, but they are good rods, none the less.

BUT it should be noted that I have not handled one of these so I'm only speculating based on what the Skeet Reese rod was like. Being made by the same outfit though I can't imagine much better quality on the Clunn rod. I looked at Skeet's rod and the lineguides on it were awful. The spinning rod had double footed guides, which I do not like for spinning rods. Seems it would make the rod too stiff in places and also it keeps the line guide ring too close to the blank and that lets line slap the blank as it comes off the reel. That would effect cast distance. AND, the line guides were rough too. There were places in them that would have damaged line as it passed up the blank and out. For $90, I would have expected a LOT more. I didn't like the blank either. It was WAY too limber. No backbone. That might be fine for some things but not much that I'd do with it. Then that horrid yellow color isn't helping it either. At least the Clunn rod won't have that. I read where it said it has rubber grips though. What's up with that??

Wait until you see the reel that Rick designed to fit on that reel seat !!! He is such an innovator.

Clunn is one of the most successful tournament fishermen of all time. I somehow acquired one of his BassPro signature rods a few years ago and was dismayed at its weight and lack of sensitivity. I think my wife uses it as a tomato stake in the backyard nowadays and it does a fine job in that role. So color me skeptical about any other RC signature rod. Fool me once.....etc

All I'll say is that they're far more pleasant in hand than the Reese rods.

The whippy action of the Reese W&M (which I don't care for at all) must be by design, but just because it works for Reese (VanDam.....) doesn't mean it's for everyone. Bass Pros are like NASCAR drivers in that they really work in advertising. A lot of them don't use sponsor's products exclusively, or I suspect at all in some cases. A reel seat mis-aligned by 180* getting through QC is bad enough, but to post the pic in advertising? Gotta make you wonder what's going on over there.

Yeah, it does worry me about the quality aspect when they put a picture of a rod that isn't put together correctly. I do like a limber crankbait rod but I can't let go of my 4 older model BPS crankin sticks. Very forgiving to let the fish take the crankbait and they have never failed me yet.

That isn't a picture by their marketing/ad division, *** takes it's own pictures. I bet you can over tighten the hood without a reel, and spin it 180*.

I'm not commenting on the quality or lack of on the rod, but this is only a picture, akin to a typing typo that somehow was overlooked. I would not buy any rod based solely on a picture, if i can't see it in person I'm not interested.

LOL I remember those "MiniTruckin" mags and true it does look just like one of those cover trucks.

I kinda like the cracked affect on the blank. It also looks like the inserts on the guides are the quantum energy colors.

I will say one good thing about it's looks, the translucent thread wraps are kinda cool, just not on that blank with those guide inserts. Yuck. Where is your taste RC?

I like the way the colors look but I'm not sure I like it on a rod. Would look good on a "mini truck" though.

I'm thinking about buying one for deep divers since it won't be used much but I've not heard much good from this rod. But at $50 I may try it.

I don't really like the W&M Reese rods other than the 7' and 7'10" crankbait rods. If you fish in current (rivers) they are great for medium and deep cranks and can double up for trolling #9 shad raps for 'eyes. For 50 bucks I'm half tempted to try one of the RC squarebill rods.
