Favorite Shimano Reel For Flipping & Pitching

Featured Replies

Just gathering info.

I think any of them will do fine but I prefer a 6.2 gear ratio. If you throw lighter plastics/jigs, a light weight perforated spool holding less line, such as on a Chronarch 50MG is also useful. I have one of the CA200 Castaic reels with a flipping switch (rocker arm) from the early 2000's. Used it 2 hrs and it's been sitting in my reel cabinet ever since. Many think it's an advantage to pitch left handed with a right hand reel, or pitch right handed with a left hand reel, so you don't have to switch the rod/reel to your other hand during the presentation. Switching hasn't been a problem for me, but everyone has to judge that for himself.

I found it an advantage to pitch left handed with a right handed reel, not because of the switchoff, but simply because I couldn't do it right handed for some reason. Don't know why either, my casting hand is predominately my right, though I can cast left too.

Sorry, no input on the Shimano reel preference. I'm using a Curado for this now, but I'm sure the Citica would work equally as well, both the E series.

With whatever reel you choose, do yourself a favor and upgrade the bearings. They will make it much easier to pitch. Less effort = More control.

Favorite for jigs/weights of 1/2 or more is Core 100MGFV or Castaic201 that's been tuned. For lighter weights, Ch51MG.

I rarely find the need to flip, but do a lot of pitching.

My favorite pitching reel is probably a Shimano Stradic

paired with a MH spinning rod rated for 10 to 20-lb line.
