Feathered Trebles

In what situations and for what baits do you use feathered trebles? Any baits or circumstances when you just will not use them?

Some top water plugs and suspending jerkbaits.

A Jigging spoon is also a good place to hang one.

Like A-Jay mentioned, some topwater plugs and jerkbaits. I know a lot of peeps don't like it on a dog walker, but I had a ton of success on this one I tied:

I never thought about a situation of when not to use a dressed tail on a topwater or a jerkbait. I guess that would be an angler preference?

If the bass are slapping at my topwater baits I will swap out for a feathered hook. One thing to try with your popping baits is to have a regular hook on the rear, tie a leader line a few inches long off the back to a feathered hook. I have had a lot of success doing this and have hooked up some doubles on a pop-r rigged this way. Also as mentioned I use them a lot on my jerk baits. If I am going to yo-yo a rattle trap or similar bait I will put a feather hook on it just to give it a different look.

Once I've lost the feathered hook, I just replace with a standard. Never really noticed much of a production difference.

I like to add a feathered treble to the front of my flutter spoon or jigging spoon along with the regular back treble. I don't really like them on topwaters very much because they seem to kill the action a little bit.

Topwater poppers and a crankbait now and then.

Mostly topwater poppers.

Note RICOs and other brands that come with a feathered treble hook.

Happy New Year!

I've already got that exact Super Spook Jr/feather combo in my box :)

My plan is to outfit just about all my LC Pointers with feathered trebles.

Only on topwaters and suspending jerkbaits with a deadstick pause, otherwise, I see no point in the trouble. Even my LC wakes are featherless, mostly from all the fish they've caught - no change in effectiveness.

I think if you use that exact criteria - on any lure worked with a pause - you cannot go wrong!

Try it on one of your LC's first and see how you like the action before you switch them all. It works very well on a spook jr, but the dressed hook I posted won't work on a smaller or lighter dog walker. Smaller and lighter need smaller and less feathers to be effective.

The one I posted really snakes on the water. I'm sure you can see that on yours!

I use them on all poppers and on most of my tiny torpedos. I tie my own but I dont use feathers. I use EP hair, bucktail, flashabou and EP Sparkle. For the torpedos I use just a short skirt of translucent flahabou and 2 or 3 longer strands of red Sparkle.
