  4. Had them jump from the live well.(More than once). Culled the wrong fish.(More than once). Released one and immediately wished I had put it on the measuring board.(Many times). Inadvertently pre released one when it comes unhooked in the boat and bounces back in the water.(Many times). One time had the bottom break out of the weigh bag walking up the dock.(Just once). Now place the bag in a net when I feel the need. Thankfully i have never tried to weigh a short fish or come to weighin with more than a legal limit(not yet). If it can happen I have had it happen.(Too many times).
  5. Main lake or secondary(First point into a pocket)points that the wind is blowing waves across. They are rough to fish sometimes, but if that's where they are set up just point the bow into the wind, turn the bilge pump on(At times waves will break over the bow into the boat if it's bad enough), store everything you don't want wet, and get it on. Came real close to taking them over the bow last Saturday, but they were just a couple of inches shy. Whew...
  6. Depending on the density a c-rig might not be the best presentation. Don't know your situation at all, but many times a c-rig won't allow you to drop that lure down deep in the branches around the root bases. Fishing vertical will allow you to put that lure down deep where it might need to be. JMO. Jack I too, appologize for the hi-jack
  7. Braid will cut through the grass a lot better than mono or floro.
  8. I love braid for certain situations. Especially a heavy jig in the hydrilla, a frog, and the main line on my c-rig. Other than that i have switched to XPS floro for a lot of my other set ups. Of course, I still have to use my "big game" for a few set ups to.
  9. Depends on the lure. I prefer 7.1.1 for traps and either a 3.8.1 or a 5.0.1 for DD22s and the like.
  10. The hottest lure years ago when Toledo Bend opened was a green and white bucktail jig. Untold numbers of fish were caught fishing them just the way you are doing yours. You have just become a better fisherman by trying different things. Not only makes you better, but gives you the confidence to continue trying new techniques. Congratulations, and don't be afraid to fish them other unconventional ways. You might be surprised.
  11. One that old will have a gear drive set up, or should. Not a round gear, just a short straight length of metal with teeth down one side. good luck
  12. X2, any hardware store or boat dealer will stock it.
  13. I totally disagree. 40 years in a glass boat and not once have I had to make a hull repair. I've been on more stumps than most will encounter in a lifetime without the first crack or cut(No dent either,lol.).
  14. Going up Friday for a Saturday tournament. Fish have been biting well in the backs of the pockets, secondary points, and main lake points. Buck brush with at least 4' of water has been producing well. Lots of fish on beds(You should know how to attack these). Rogues, top water, and brushhogs have been producing consistant stringers of 20 pounds. Hope this helps someone else that will be there, at least I have given you a couple of starting points. I am fishing out of San Augustine Park up Ayish Bayou, but have not been on the lake since last Sunday. Good luck, Jack
  15. Interesting, thanks RW.
  16. If the ramp is busy and you are alone just unhook everything, trim the motor up, let everyone know, back down, and turn it loose. Someone will catch it and I never have a problem getting a ride out to the boat. Tons do it around here. Everyone appreciates it as you don't tie up the ramp. Your in the water in 15 seconds. Go park, walk back down to the ramp, and ask someone for a ride out to it. Works every time.
  17. Actually i have not seen a lot of that in my area. We fish against and with women each week and they are as welcome in our conversations before and after a days fishing as anyone(More than some). In fact, if you look around, they are the center of a ton of bull sessions and when they speak most are paying attention. They handle themselves well and know what they are talking about. The ones in this area will flat put the hurt on you and can handle a boat with the best of them. I would just as well fish with one(And I have several times) as anyone out there. You just need a good understanding when it comes to bathroom issues, handle yourself professionally, and there is no problem. Fished a tournament last Saturday with one entered. She was the life of the weighin. Her name is Rena, and was great to meet her and have the chance to visit with her and her husband Paul. Great couple. In fact, it's never the women that stir up issues, it's always some hothead that has no clue and can't catch enough fish to satisfy being entered. I will fish with a woman any day. Never fished with one I could not learn from either. Wish we had more, it's good for the sport. FYI, I am 61, so most of my friends are in the 50-60 age group, and never heard a word from any of them as to what you speak. Jack ***They look a hell of a lot better in a set of bibs than any of us guys***
  18. I do that all the time. A good crankbait rod should be a good spinnerbait rod as well.
  19. I guess this old man is totally out of the loop. Don't even know what they are. Anyone care to describe them or post a picture to enlighten me?
  20. I'm scared to check. Keep them in hiding from the wife. I totally agree that I too have way more than anyone needs.
  21. Not a jig, but it definately catches fish. Sorta like the old hula grub set up that has the skirt forward. Been around a long time. Last time I saw it was last spring when Catt and I were fishing Toledo Bend. He had one tied on..
  22. T-rig 90% of the time.
  23. T-rig with mustad 5/0 EWG hooks. I don't peg the weight. sinker size depends on the mood of the fish and the cover I am fishing. Generally I prefer a little heavier weight. Let's me cover more water quicker. I pitch it lift it once and then move to next pitch. Colors depend on water, time of year, depth, and mood of the fish. I generally start out with either Watermellon/Red, PB&J, or Camo. Junebug, Junebug/Red, or Black/Blue will work for me at times. Good luck, Jack
  24. Have never used them but I know people that swear by them. I feel the need to retie often and I would think some fail to do this when using the clips. Creates a weak spot by ignoring the knot. Just my preference.
  25. X2, operator error and the BB are the cause of most bearing failures. you can blow the rear seal with too much grease. better off with a dust cap.
