Tips for a first time boater...
I would say remember to put the trolling motor up before you take off!! Last year was my first year as a boater I got PO'd at a dude that pulled up a cast away on me. Rather then start casting at him and yelling I put the poles down cranked the motor hit the ol'throttle to leap frog'em and got sprayed in the face by water . Terrable lesson learned and kinda expencive. Oh yeah I also bring a roll of TP(White Gold).

be honest...
I went ice fishing yestarday, brought a new baitcaster and was flippen and pitching into open holes inbetween running to flags. I think other people fishing around us thought I was nuts. But practice makes perfect!

If you could only fish ONE lure the rest of your life....
Chug Bug I would fish it all day long just to see a bass smack it on top.

Bass fishing in Northern New York
Couple more from the capital area. Round Lake awesome LM fishing in the spring till the weeds completely take it take over. Ballston Lake which was once NYS record holder lake for LMB and Pike back in the day. And if you feel like walking banks you have Schoharie creek AWESOME SMB fishing, hit the large deep pools you can pull out some nice walleye. I personally spend alot of time on the Merky Mohawk I just love fishin that river. Oh yeah if ya just have a row boat and electric trollin motor ya have Collins Lake in Scotia NY there are some monster LMB in there. My uncle a couple years ago caught a 46" Tiger Musky out of there.

Winter Needs to end really soon
AAAAAAAAAAAW MAN!! Ill take the cover off my boat every once and a while and take a look at her and make sure its comfortable and warm and free of dust in my garage. Take a big wiff and smell it, just has thet smell to it I love. Ill also hop in and have a seat (not often though) and imagine im rippen down the mohawk river, champlain, saratoga, hudson river, ballston lake @ 65-70 MPH uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuug I could go on and on!!!! Iv gone through my tackle at least a couple two, tree, ten times reorganised touched up my lures. this year i have refused to buy too much new stuff but only a few things. I have tackle coming out of my gills and my wife has gotten on my case. So I just look at the catalogs itching to get online or pick up the phone to place an order!! I cant wait ti re-line all my reel's I hold out until the last minute to take care of that. OK now Im really depressed Im gonna have to place an order that'll make me feel better!!! :'(

Anyone else...
Well during tournaments I probably wont throw anything new. Ill throw what I know and what I have the most confidence in. But on my off time ill be trying all kinds new stuff. Im really looking forward to trying Mann's 10" snakes in the weedy muck they look pretty cool. And im gonna invest into some large swim baits iv never tried them but looking forward to adding them to my collection. Im just counting the day's until I can de-winterise my boat. The unseasonably warm weather here in Upstate New York is just a big tease, it feels so much like fishing season is right around the corner. BUT I know that we will get hammered again and be in a big freeze so ill just continue to be depressed every time I walk past my boat in my garage. *sniffel*

How'd ya do this year?
Well for me this year Id have to say I did pretty well. This was my first year as a boater in tournaments. I had no intentions of being a boater this year I really just got into tournament fishing last year, it just happened. I went and looked at a boat before spring with a friend of mine. He was looking at Tritons and I ended up buying one a used 2002 Tr186 with a mercury 150 XR6. Alls I have to say is I love it. It runs excellent and its killen me seing it in my garage winterised and covered up. BUT tournament wise I feel I did great and accomplished more then I set out to do. Weekday buddy tournaments started off a little slow for me I was getting used to being the one in control and I was expecting that. I wasn't coming in with limits every week it never really got me down though I was just taking it as a first year learning experience. I did two single man tournaments the first one I came in 3rd out of 23 boats and the second one I came in 1st out of 32 boats those there had me on cloud nine. I was in contention with a bunch of local and very experienced fishermen and I did very well i wish I had done more. I fished a tournament out of state had no clue about the waters and neither did my partner. We checked out maps the night before looked for areas that we wanted to hit and never went off of what we planned to do, we figured the fish out erly and found a great pattern. Turned out to be another first place again cloud nine. Did a couple more buddy tournaments did pretty well Cant remember places I came in but I did get limits in everyone. I ended my season off in october it was an open going out of Southbay Champlain my partner had fished it often with his club for me it was another first. Well to make a long story short 4 hours into the tournament we had 6 fish and it was an 8 fish limit so we were doing pretty well 6 fish scaled out at about 20 lbs not to shabby we were feelin pretty good. We pulled up to a spot of his that produced pretty well for him in the past dropped the trollin motor and proceded to fish. We were there no more then 15 min fishing with the wind and it had us moving pretty good next thing I knew there was a guy pulling up ahead uf us that was fishing the open!! No more then a cast away my blood just started to boil I was just about to start casting at him I was so PO'd but I didn't. I figured I would just start the motor and leap frog him that'll teach'em. Fire up the motor hit the throttle next thing I know Im getting spray in my face yep I forgot to put my trollin motor up!! d**n IT!!! Bent the shaft broke the pinion nut ended my season I almost puked dumped my fish and went home. But another lesson learned Never never never forget the trollin motor ;D. This year im thinking about joining a club as a non-boater maybe even do the weekend series and learn more big water hit a bunch of opens in my boat then just to be depressed all winter all over again. Well that was my first season and im out!

Mohawk River Upstate Ny awesome SMB fishin!!

shallow smalies
When creek fishing for smb I tend to down size my lures and also I will use stuff I trout fish with. Inline spinners, Panther Martins, small top water plugs, small spinner baits.Ill also wacky rig worms and float them down the stream. Just try everything you have, work the fast water the slow water and everything that looks fishy inbetween. I have a uncle that gets a kick out of catching slobs with gummy worms why you ask I dont know but they do work. Main thing is just get out have fun and take lots of pictures.

Know where i can get cheap fishing gear?
I think Storm, rapala and manns products are all pretty reasonably priced for hard baits. Yes you are gonna pay up to 6.00 +/- a lure but you need to buy and try and gain confidence in the lures you try. Here are a couple you might wanna try. 1. Storm Chugbug 2. Manns Baby1- 3 Rapala Shad-rap 4.Rapala X-rap

ICE fishing for Bass????!
I have never actually targeted bass icefishing but do catch the occasional LMB on tip ups and shiners. Mainly im out trying to get a hold of a big tooty northerns and walleye. I set my tip ups on the edge of weed beds in about 6 to 10 FOW. You would think that we would get more then we do but rarely come acrossed bass. A couple things you should never forget when you are out on the ice for the down time when flags arient flying especially if you bring kids. 1. wiffel ball and bat 2. bbgun and targets 3. a football 4. radio for the games on sunday and 5. gas stove to heat up venison chili or stew.
