Is A Split Grip Worth An Extra $40 To $50?
gripnrip, like Jigfishn 10 says, it's a preference thing. I have both types, but like the all cork handle better. I really like the BPS older style "power hump" Yeah, I know not many like those. But if you can, ask a buddy to try the type you are interested in for a day.

Blow-Up Pontoon Boat
If you have the extra $100, I would say you are better off w/the kayak. Kayaks are good in windy/cold conditions. Do you have a way to transport it? Another option to go in on something with a brother/father/cousin, etc. I was going by you only had $200. I have waders and fly-fish in the winter, so the cold would not matter to me. Whatever you decide, save some cash for a life-vest. Gear is replaceable.

-
Blow-Up Pontoon Boat
It's less than $200, if that's what you can spend, than go for it. Kayaks, even used are more expensive. Good luck, use it often

November Brown Trout
Stop by Housatonic River Outfitters in Cornwall Bridge if that's near your gramp's house. good people there, they can tell where some good spots are and what flies to use. Nice catch!
