  1. ^Similar to comparing IPT, not gear ratios, I look at diameter rather than "test." I don't see it as a rant, rather than the frustration of why so many don't read between the lines, and pay attention to the specs. The ranges in size are nuts. "10#" YZ Hybrid: .012 Seaguar Rippin': .010 CXX: .014 XL: .011 OG Stren: .012 Sufix Elite: .012 Defier (11#) .011 Out of those, Defier and Rippin' are very close to their stated "test" and breaking strength. CXX is thick, but you can tell, and I drop a size. So, 10 fishes like 12# and breaks around 15.
  2. Yeah, probably not. Though if you lose it for some reason, you can be assured you can get an exact copy that is tuned properly and acts the same as the lost one. That's where I'll pay more, rather than to go through $20 in lower priced baits to find the one "swimmer." Cough - cough Rapala!
  3. Saint Croix Wild River WRC90MLF2 for around $200. This is a VERY nice rod that I have used. I've also used their Avid steelhead rod in a 10' length for $270. These rods are very dialed in for this type of lure.
  4. No doubt. I preferred hard baits as a kid because I could catch hundreds of fish on one.
  5. A Lucky Craft crankbait usually goes retail for $17. That same lure would have been $7.75 in 1985. I remember cranks - good cranks - going for around $5 at that time. Thing is, the LC are made with more modern technology, they are more consistent in action, and most importantly they work at catching. So, they aren't that much more than the typical lure. Yes, there are $25 lures, but those are usually larger topwaters or very touchy to design suspending jerk/rip/slash baits. As always, there's a bit of you get what you pay for, though you can often find lower cost items that work similarly out of the box, or with a bit of fine tuning. It's always been that way. We've been looking at some lower priced options from some of sponsors, and found decent tackle like from KastKing, Norman, Bandit, etc.
  6. He must like catching smaller fish, lol.
  7. That boat is bad!
  8. It's possible the boat came with Lowrance pre-installed, and he added the Humminbird units to supplement. He can do that if he doesn't have a electronics sponsor.
  9. This is where I was headed, if they are stockies. The dough even works on wild fish as well. You can use a float rig, if there's current or a slip shot rig if it's still water. The dough kind of floats. Use just enough to cover the hook. I use little Raven hooks, #10 or 12. These have worked on steelhead over 15 lbs.
  10. Haven't encountered any issues, so it's hard to say anything other than typical. It is a smaller diameter line, so if you're looking for extra protection, you can step up a size. Been using 6, 12, and 20.
  11. The best mono I've used is Seaguar Rippin'.
  12. Are they stockies or wild?
  13. I use Plano Hydroflow boxes. Any rust issues I had in the past is gone.
  14. What would keep someone from unscrewing the ball from the boat? It's a 5 minute job to remove them, so that's probably the best solution.
  15. That indicates a very aggressive and active feeding pattern.
  16. I use Lakemaster for northeast states. Finger Lakes are nicely represented.
  17. That's exactly the product I was thinking of, or similar. Thanks!
  18. No, because I set my drag to around 6-7 lbs. If you're fishing slop and need more drag power, then step up to the Grid Iron Brush jig with the heavy owner flipping hook. I do "Napoleon Complex" hooksets, btw. Lift and separate!
  19. Doesn't that protrac support trolling gear and what not? If it can hold a 25# ball and down rigger, it can hold a graph. Pretty sure ther's a way to do it. @S Hovanec????
  20. So they add value to an already good product, and open new revenue streams via chip sales. It makes good sense for Garmin.
  21. That makes sense. Reduce sales revenue for your own company to get back at another.
  22. I would say that is a stretch. The map cards are just underlay images. Garmin just added good mapping to already good mapping, and will gain sales revenue from others' fish finders with less detailed base maps.
  23. I've been using their 4 carrier braid. Works great. I don't care for the smoother, 8+ carrier lines.
  24. Mosquito hooks for me. #1 to #6.
