Baitcaster Or Spinning Rod
A good one. It can be hard and a bit frustrating learning to use a baitcaster. It will make the task easier and more enjoyable if you have quaility equiptment. If you are a Shimano fan the Citica is a good place to start. Curado even better.

What Size Spinning Reel?
I'm just the opposite. My stradic 1000 felt very akward when I put it on my bass rods. Maybe it's just what you get use to. For sure a 1000 is capable in doing the job in most cases.

Baitcaster Or Spinning Rod
I would start learning to fish with a baitcaster if I were you. As a general rule use b/c for heavier lures and spinning for lighter lures. I fish with a guy (in his 60's) that never learned a b/c and I know some will diagree but I believe it's a handicap for him especially when it comes to froggin and punching into thick heavy cover. Buy a good quaility reel and start out with braid, would be my suggestion, then start training your thumb.

Are The Expensive Rods Really Worth It?
Pretty much got it figured out. If I OWN a $100 rod then that is the best way to go.(I catch just as many fish as one that has a $500 rod) If I OWN a $500 rod then that is the best way to go. ( I've got to love my rod, or I just wasted $500 didn't I ?)

Gary Yamamoto Fat Ika Any Good?
The 3'' Ika (not the tiny) has worked very well on smallies for me. Problem is, my most successful color (green pumkin/black) is no longer available. I can't find them anywhere, not even on Yamamoto's web site. If anybody has access to that color in the 3'' ika please let me know.

They are a worthless P.O.S. As a public service I am collecting, free of charge all Fat Ikas for proper disposal. Please P.M. me for the address. You're welcome.

Curado D Series
I've got a 101D. It's the least expensive reel I own, but has always given me great service, just keep them cleaned and oiled.
