I've caught quite a few pike and lost quite a few lures on 12-15lb line. Mostly jerkbaits and spinnerbaits. Its risky. If they hit the line with their teeth there is a good chance you will lose the bait. They do make heavy FC leaders. I'll be trying them out this year.

Look at the LC dd series or staycees. Both are awesome.

I've never had problems with insert free but I have with insert. I've had weights that I couldn't get the line through without messing with the insert.

There are a bunch of brands of gloves out that will work with touch screens. Most focus around cell phone use or ipad.
