  9. Thank you my friends - I appreciate it. Yea, I thought about retaining that by catch Dwight, but I have to admit I was unprepared and didn't have a suitable creel on board the Old Town. Didn't want to leave them flopping on the deck . . . . . . . Maybe next time. A-Jay

  11. There some choices. Lures presented; Low & slow Mid depth & slow High & slow Or Low & fast Mid depth & fast High & fast Or Low & erratic Mid depth & erratic High & erratic Then add in Small, mid-sized & Big or over sized baits And then move to a new spot and start all over again. A-Jay
  12. I fish what has worked early season before in places that have produced in the past. If the bass in your water responded to a bait last spring, they'll do it again this spring. FIsh 2 or 3 baits that match the conditions & that you have confidence in. Changing all over the place before I've developed a rhythm, screws me up. You'll be good - believe it and then you'll see it. Good Luck A-Jay
  13. Excellent ~ ! PB's are Always a Blast Congrats A-Jay
  14. Nope - Why get in line to make a futile attempt to convince the bass that your offering is somehow different & better on a spot that gets Hammered ? Instead, I'd spend whatever time it took to hunt down & locate something else. It's there, somewhere on the lake. A spot that is probably smaller, much less obvious and wasn't on TV. The bass know where it is and I'd make it my mission to find it; and there's probably more than one. I'd be glad to have those not willing to look for the real gems to stay over on the community holes. It leaves all the hidden treasure to me. Oh, and once I find them, I might only fish them at night. A-Jay
  15. I got out Saturday for a day of smallmouth fishing which was also the MI opener for pike & walleye. This lake has a little of everything so I expected to have company. Upon my arrival, I was pleasantly surprise to find that I had the place to myself. Both air & water temps maxed out in the low to mid 40’s with a stiff east wind, but the sun was shining so I was going to make the best of it. The morning started off with a bang as an excellent bass came with in the first few casts. While working a wind-blown point, a real brute of a pre-spawn smallmouth completely choked my squarebill. I mean the bait was Gone. She was cold & super plump, and after a brief fight that was more like a wallowing, she was in the net. This is the kind of bass I came here for, five pounds of Bronze fatness. Sweet. As the day went on, the wind came on stronger but I caught 3 more smallmouth along with a couple of walleye. The Squarebill, a lipless bait & a jerk bait took fish; all of which came off main lake points – in the wind – had to be in the wind. Seems it’s always that way. I rarely get bit on the leeward side, so I don’t even bother fishing it anymore. Forecast is not looking fisherman friendly at all the next several days, but after today I’ll be looking to get back at it ASAP. Here’s a video of the first fish. https://youtu.be/vVZtF8W23s8 Here the rest of the day ~ including a little by catch https://youtu.be/FrkyH8wt8G4 A-Jay
  16. Didn't kill it today - and it was howling - kind froze my Arse off. But still managed a nice bag of smallies including a sweet 5 lb fatty. A-Jay

  21. Sweet Bronze back. Congrats on your PB. And if you don't ever measure or weigh any of your fish, you can probably have a PB every trip. A-Jay

  25. When I'm fishing a spinner bait & a chatter bait in the same type of cover (namely shallow to mid-depth vegetation) I like to allow the fish to get the bait sufficiently before I detect the strike so I don't pull it away prematurely, missing a solid hook up. Additionally, on a long cast, I need to know that my tackle selection will allow me to put that decent size hook into the fish with authority. I've played around with a few different versions of rod, & line types / size (Glass, Graphite & composite sticks as well as Mono, Co-poly and braided line) and have settled on one that works for me. (The reel only changes in the IPT area depending on the water temps- but it's rarely a high speed model in these conditions). The Quantum Tour KVD Signature Series (TKVD746MA) MH Crankbait rod and 15, 17 or 20 lb fluorocarbon line has produced the best results so far. The 7'4" rod length launches the 3/8 & 1/2 oz baits nicely. The EGC glass/graphite composite blank has a decent parabolic action and backbone. So the very slight delays on the hook set allows the fish to get the bait and then the rods back bone steps in and does the rest. The blanks does a nice job holding onto and landing the bass. The fluorocarbon plays an important role here. Besides the expected sensitivity it offers while using a moving bait, without it I don't feel I was getting anything close to the hook set I wanted. I've been playing around with the 7'10' version of this rod for chatterbaits as well. But it's a beast of a stick and so far I haven't needed it for this application. But I'd use it if I need to.
