Where as self improvement through introspection is generally considered a good thing, there often comes a time when a man may realize that when dealing with the outdoors and nature, the vast array of unseen and unknown variables makes complete control unattainable. Clearly, the objective is to land the fish. If what you doing is successful, there isn't really anything to worry about. It doesn't matter what "The Pros" or anyone else does. If you're hooking, fighting & landing your fish - You're the Pro. Don't fix it, if it Ain't Broke. A-Jay

I do not like tempting fate - not any more. As a younger angler, I would do it often. Losing a big fish here and there was OK with me as I had this ill-conceived notion that I'd always get another chance at a big fish some other time. Well, time on the water (and life in general) has taught me that this is not the case and Any Missed opportunity is just that, missed. It's hard enough to land a Super Beast when you think you've done everything right, but to start off the event under-gunned is like setting myself up for heart break - been there done that; but not any more. At this point, I'd rather not get bit than to throw into a gnarly fish holding spot, hook a U-Boat and lose it - all because I was willing to jump out of the airplane with a parachute that I Knew wasn't going to open 20 % of the time. But hey, that's just me. A-Jay

I believe if an angler fishes an array of fishing conditions, it really pays to have at least one confidence bait or techniques for each one. Several baits & techniques seem to cross over and be effective during a couple of different season and different fishing situations. If you think about the fairly wide variety of situations most bass fisherman are faced with, having a "confidence" bait for each is a pretty tall order. Usually takes YEARS of trial & error. Clear water, dirty water, rising water, falling water, cooling water, warming water, windy, raining, calm, bait saturated, highly pressured, light cover, heavy cover, full moon, new moon, barometer crashing, barometer rising, ice out, holy smokes that's a lot of stuff. Looking for ONE bait or technique that's effective for all of that is simply not happening. Fish it all and find out what works the best during that time - but you have to know - it will change from day to day, week to week, and season to season. So the reality is - there is no such thing as a bait that works all the time - but there are fisherman who through years and years of trial and error have the ability to make a really good guess at where to start . . . .
