  1. I wear a ball cap and strap the head lamp on the cap over the visor. The cap's visor will help deflect the light off your face. It will help. Also you shouldn't be running your light all the time - if you are STOP ! White light over shallow water at night will all but ruin your chances of catching fish. Your eyes will adjust to the low light - it's called night vision. It takes 20 - 30 minutes to come on full and you'll be surprised how well you can see. Word of caution - EVERY TIME you turn on a white light - your night vision is Toast - and it will take another 20 - 30 minutes to come back. A RED Lens / or Light will reduce this effect dramatically. It's all I use. Lastly "The Spooky" feeling of being out on the water at night all alone - That's one of the best parts of night time bassing . . . . Let's you know you're ALIVE ! I was out last night, between the owls, coyote, the surprise beaver splashes and the buck that was snorting at me half the night from the bank, I was in heaven - but I will admit the beaver splash ALWAYS surprises the heck out of me . . 10. I also fish from a canoe. Although it sounds like my Old Town is carrying a bit more weight than the canoe you mentioned, I still had to adapt to the boat's movement towards the fish on the hook set. Depending on how (Technique) your fishing, switching to braid type line helped, also a longer rod can assist by allowing you to move more line on the hook set. Setting the boat up and fishing "from the side" rather than straight off the bow will also reduce the boat desire / ability to track directly toward your fish. You could deploy a small anchor while fishing in a good spot to help hold your position as well. Good Luck A-Jay

  24. Smallies are often big suckers for Speed. When fish are playing hard to get in deep water, I've had success fishing a fairly over weighted tube and snapping it off the bottom aggressively. The weight used depends on the water clarity, class line and water depth, but you'll want the bait to be literally crashing back to the bottom very quickly; at least a 1/2 ounce anyway. Make a long cast, let the bait touch bottom and then start a snap and go retrieve; only allowing the bait to rest on the bottom long enough to know it's there. The strike is rarely felt as the fish usually grab the bait as it's falling on a slack line. So they are just "there" and you end up hooking them the next time the bait is snapped up off the bottom. I use fast action spinning gear, 10 braid and a 10-12 ft. section of 10 lb. mono leader - helps absorb the shock. This has worked many times and often right in the middle of the day. If you get the school fired up you can get a decent bag very quickly. Good Luck A-Jay
