Drowning Doesn't Look Like Drowning
Good stuff Glenn. This portion of info from the second link, makes an important point but does not indicate why. "It's essential that you first try to help the swimmer using the reach, throw, and row method. If those steps don't work and you must go into the water because there is no other option, it's essential that you wear a life jacket, take a flotation device for the swimmer, and call for help or alert someone before you head into the water," When in the water with a drowning victim, in the Coast Guard we were taught to approach the victim from BEHIND. Unless the person is unconscious, they will climb on your head trying to get a breath forcing you underwater. This is a very dangerous situation and very often the untrained "good Samaritan" rescuer becomes a victim as well. If you find yourself going into the water to help anyone~ - Call for help or alert someone before you head into the water. Although, sometimes this just isnt possible. - Wear a pfd if you can and take another one with you if readily available. - Bring something for the victim to grab onto (to keep them off you) after they grab onto it, you can tow them to safety. - If a victim does climb onto you or grabs you and starts to sink you as well, simply swim Down/underwater and the victim will usually release you, as the last thing they want to do is go further underwater. During training we endured some decent brawls with our instructors as they simulated being a drowning victim. A-Jay

Let's see em'
OK SMB addicts ~ the air is getting crisper, the water temps are dipping and the nights are certainly cooling off (thank you very much). All this usually adds up to fat hungry brown bass on the bite (hopefully). So let's see your catches ! I'm heading out to catch and post some NEW shots ASAP ! Good Luck to all. A-Jay

North Woods Twins
Hey J, ~ yea they were both fatties and both were a healthy 4 lbs plus. When I grabbed and looked at the first one I thought "might be a 5" but the scale disagreed. Then I lipped the next one and I'm like " now that's a 5" and then to the scales . . and . . . again 4 and change. Funny how that works. I am NOT complaining however. A-Jay

North Woods Twins
Headed out yesterday morning at day break. It had been a clear night and air temps dropped off to the mid Thirties - brr. Bite was non-existent until after 10 am. Then the lake slowly began to come to life. Fish were spooky and with a blue bird sky and flat calm conditions I broke out the spinning gear and went down to 6 pound test. I was finding smb on points and lmb in the backs of coves, mostly on wood. A swim jig with a swim senko trailer was proving successful. Water temps are holding in the low 60's and it's crazy crystal clear to 20 feet. I haven't fished this section of water until that morning but I'm glad I poked my nose in there. At the very back end of the southern most cove I found a nice pile of downed trees in 18 fow (now way point 747) and on back to back casts, I took these two brutes. It had been a while since I caught lmb on spinning gear, I need to do this more often. They were very sporty on the 6 lb line. I called it a day after releasing the second fish. Good way to end a nice morning. I'm Taking my wife with me in the morning and I am really hoping lightning will strike twice ~ A-Jay

Nothing Over 14-Inches Tournament
That does sound fun. I think my initial perception is that with a 14 inch limit, that somehow makes it easier. Which is wrong. A bass is a bass and catching then, whatever the size, is challenging. But it would be just my mistake luck, that would be the one and only night I hang a 5 fish stringer that goes 25 pounds ! Wrong place wrong time - that's me . . . . A-Jay

Sun Angle
You got that right J I have learned this to be true in many of the waters I fish. Often times to beat it. I transit in way shallow water to get in position on a spot so as not to spook wary smb. ;)A-Jay

KVD-His strengths
Is it possible KVD has modified his tactics to better utilize all the improvements in electronics ? The ability to locate fish holding structure is not what it was just a few years ago. Crankbaits go hand in hand with Down scan and Side scan sonar. A-Jay

Wind is your friend
When the wind gets up, really burning a white on white spinner bait in clear water, just under the surface, over/around wind blown points can be a dynamite way to hammer smb in early fall. The strike is vicious. A-Jay

Itching to get out
Much better now ~ really needed that. And wouldn't you know it, dressed for the nasty weather and it broke up just as I got to the lake. Slight wind and a cool drizzle persisted all day. Fished some new water. Found a few new deep water log piles. That is always a good thing. Pulled up a few including this fine example of the target species. Going back this morning and bringing my partner this time. (my wife) She has been through the ringer recently and I'm hoping a trip over a "magic tree" or two will lift the spirits. Fall fishing is good. A-Jay

Itching to get out
Well, I can't take it another day ~ I haven't been out since before the holiday weekend and since then this entire week has been nasty ! ! ! Wind, rain and COLD - I've been without power on and off for the past 2 days. Today the wind finally calmed down to 15 but it's still raining. I going ! Can you say Rain Gear - I can and will. I'll let you know how it goes - might be OK. (I was trying to tap into the power of positive thinking right there) btw - all the great pictures/videos posted here and the exciting stories that go with them IS NOT HELPING ! A-Jay

Anyone else heat with wood?
I had to take down a cherry tree once - it was unreal just how tough it was. Good luck with that. I can't say how the Mantis will do on that but it goes right through oak fine. A-Jay

Anyone else heat with wood?
I do. I moved to the Snow belt in Northern Michigan 3 years ago. I've been heating with wood (from my own property thank you very much) every winter. I take it down with a Stihl MS 290 and use this Mantis log splitter. Both have been trouble free and suit my needs perfectly. Here's the link and info on the log splitter. I found a good price at amazon.com http://mantisdealer.com/swiftsplit.asp http://www.amazon.com/Mantis-SwiftSplit-Log-Splitter-5005/dp/B000FIV2AE/ref=sr_1_43/105-7205624-6257228?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1187569984&sr=1-43 A-Jay
