  1. so one of my favorite time of the year is coming up, fall, and i have a lot of good luck with crank baits. ive got the baits and reel for crankin, just no the rod. for th longest time i have been using a very crappy zebco rod for my crankin, plenty of give, but is just WAY to limber and i dont know how much money ive wasted on superglue to just keep the thing together, ;D ive been lookin at the browning silaflex fiberglass rod. ive heard fiberglass is the go to material for crankbait rods, and i seen this, i think its a steal. any personal input on this rod, or any other suggestions on other good, fairly cheap crankbait rods i could look into? sorry for being so winded, just tryin to cover as much ground as i can. thanks, -j
  2. good luck man, get your son to catch a big one and make us all jealous ;D
  3. try a big rattle trap of some sort. works really well around places were u see a lot of shad activity.
  4. im LOVIN that xsv shirt. 8-)
  5. thats no largie, thats an ausie bass in a green jump suit! ;D nice fish man!
  6. look for irregularities in the pads, not just holes, but "points" created by pads goin into deeper water. places with wood and pads would also be a good bet also. what ive found to be pretty productive is "transition" areas, like mud changing over to sand. try some sort of bluegill imitation, maybe some sort of swimbait on weed edges? idk, ive just never fished pads before. im just goin by what i do on thick shoreline weeds. rules of thumb: jig/sinking lure in holes hard baits on edges(rage tail works wonders here!) frogin the slop! -j edit: from reading your post, sounds like dingy water. use some lures with VIBRATION.
  7. rapala: x-rap shad, minnow rap, shad rap, jointed shad rap, DT 04, 06, or 10. bleedin colors and shad colors are what i use. bagley: only one i got is a honey B, is a superb finnesse crank.
  8. seems to me your fishing desperately, no dalibratetly. anyone can chunk and wind and bunch of random lures, hoping to catch somthing.(which usually leads to a hurt wrist and some not so encouraging words lol) fish the lures where they are designed to fished, and fish them with confidence. if you dont know how to fish em, then start reading some articles! lol. they will help you a lot, i can vouch for probably every angler on this board to that. -j
  9. drift wood lures(local company) 5 in. lizard
  10. keep em coming! thats one big "pond" lol.
  11. nice catch! ive had lots of days like that. go fishing at a couple spots, with nada... then BAM! one hefty before the days over. ;D
  12. good write up, ive been wanting to ty out some frog fishing, just never got around to it. quick quest.: whats a good all around color? green pumpkin, or anything close to that?
  13. anyone ever use those riverside baits in the dollar bin at wal-mart? they really arnt bad baits. i bought out these 5 inch straight tail worms they had: and they work! lol
  14. try a slit shot rig. find a good, open water area and fan cast to deep water as much as you can. fish this time of year ive found in ponds with little cover will use the next best thing, which is deeper water. work it slow, with some twitches here and there. any size bass love this technique, try small 4 inch worms or small flukes. good luck! -j
  15. maybe around drop offs on weed edges. in my expirience, this is amore open water technique, usually in deeper water for finicky fish. fishin this rig in weeds and such is not a good idea with 6 lb test, unless you know somthing i dont. you get a good fish deep enough in weeds, he aint comin out, lol
  16. yea, i was talking about plastics. i dont skimp om quality when it comes to hardbaits. rapala is my main plug brand, awsome quality to price ratio, handle a lot of abuse and still run more true than any brand ive used.
  17. so recently ive been "trial testing" numerous presentations.(shaky head, split shottin, jigs, ect) now, i dont have a huge budget to work with, and was looking for a cheap way to try em out, as buying a bunch of random plastics in every color of the rainbow is not an option. thus i turned to the bargin bin at the local wally world. what i discovered was a smorgasboard of lures that i thought i would never even think of buying, let alone using. but, alas, bein the cheap a** i am, i broke down and bought a couple of packs of em. i could never had made a better choice. now, like most of you br members, i am fairly brand biased. my qeustion to you is: how many of you do just as well with the "generic" brand of baits, or are willing to admit it? i hate to, but i do. :'( oh well, the fish dont seem to care
  18. small mouth in a pond??? :-? in ky? never heard of that, least not here in central ky. and yes, fishing is really relaxing, until you start catching big ones gets the blood roiling, lol
  19. thanks big-o. granted they werent huge fish, im all about the RAGE now, lol. maybe a frog bait ill use next time, i seem to catch all my biggest fish this year on topwater.
  20. so recently ive dona a lot of stream wading for smallies, i havent a clue what to use. ive only caught one small one, and it was on a 4' trick stick. i throw bitsy tubes, 3' grubs, 4' finnese worms and the like. i dont think its the bait that im throwing, its just where do stream smallies hang out this time of year? -j
  21. ive gotta couple of manns. i just never use shallow cranks. a good finnese shallow crank is the bagley honey B. has a pretty tight wiggle for a shallow runner, have had real good luck with em in creeks andponds.
  22. im might be heading back out there this afternoon. any suggestions what to use besides topwater? id like to use a jig, but only in heavy cover... would a jig work in more open water? like i said, ive used a trick stick, but to no avail. these fish seem to be more in open water than anyhing. looking for a more finnese bait, but one that could cover a lot of water.
  23. i now know for a fact that the second one was 20 inches. i marked how long he was on my pole and i just measured it. think what you like :
  24. lol, im 6' 1 mind you! ;D
