building brushpiles
Anyone have any input on building brushpiles? I was thinking my best bet would be to tie up a bunch of cut branches and tie them tight to a cinderblock. Also thinking the best way to launch them would be to drag them onto the ice this winter and wait for it to melt. Are there other types of structure I should look at? I saw on bass tech how they used pvc but that would cost too much and I think tree branches would hold more fish. Opinions?

Standing in Jon Boat
My partner has a 1236. No problem standing, but space is limited. Although those are incredible prices (cheapest 1236 in RI is $830) I would go with the 12 if you are looking to make life easier. The 16 definately needs a trailer. My partners 1236. Yea, that's snow and ice,lol

How to-jon boat floors
3 greatest advantages -sound reduction -flat floor, no ribs to trip on -all boats get a bit a water in them from the fish you bring in or the anchor, etc. Floors keep your gear out of the puddle.

I've never thrown one of those, please keep us posted as to your results. How well does that weedgaurd work? The thought of pulling somthing through the pads with the hook pointing down seems impossible to me.

How to-jon boat floors
standard outdoor short-pile. It has a rubber backing. Go to any carpet store and tell them what you want it for and they'll show you. Only 1 store (GCO) carries it around here. Actually, they all carry it but only 1 keeps it in stock. You may have to order it.

Transom on Old Jon
I would rebuild it just as it was personally.Coat whatever you use with polyurethane or fiberglass resin and you'll never have to do this again. Good luck!

Crazy things fishing partners do
Somewhat related. I used to live on Barrington beach. Only a couple houses at the end of a public beach. The bluefish use the whole cove to corner huge schools of baitfish and when the bite is on, it's actually"loud". Bluefish boil on bait in football field size schools. Anyway, I was awoken one night about 4-430AM by the fish going nuts. I went downstairs, grabbed a rod off the wall and made my way down to the beach. I waded out in my underwear up to my waist and started nailing fish after fish. Next thing I know, my watch is beeping(wake up alarm) It's 7:00 and there are about 50 people all around having morning coffee, walking dogs, fishing,etc,...AND I'M IN MY UNDERWEAR!. Had to high step it up the lawn, laughing to myself the whole way.

I agree with everything above PLUS you'll want to bring a huge bag of luck, maybe some offerings for the gods and a 4-leaf clover, because even if you do everything right, and have all the right gear, you still stand a good chance of not getting them to the boat. Just the way it is.

How to-jon boat floors
I've recieved 3 emails asking how to make the floors that are in my jon boat. I just want to post it here so I can reply by sending link (easier) and so anyone else who might be interested, can look. ***************************************** make cardboard template of floor area. (basically to mark where ribs are) trace to 3/8 cdx plywood Cut plywood on INSIDE if line(leaves 1/8 in for carpet to roll over edge) coat in polyurethane or resin, let dry Lay carpet on ground and lay board on it upside down. With marker, mark where corners are(just a rough idea of size for gluing) lift board and spray wood and carpet(not too far outside of corner marks) with 3m 99 spray adhesive. Let sit apart for 1 minute and then lay board back down on carpet aligning w/ corner marks. Trim carpet 2 inches away from board all around. pull over and staple (stainless steel staples only) Flip it, lay it in boat and do next one. They just lay in boat. works great, removable for cleaning and winter storage too. Make sure when aligning carpet with boards that carpet pattern has been given some thought. Mine is lines and they all run side to side. Questions? shoot

Re: CIRCLE THE WAGONS! (Please read.)
You guys are AWESOME!!!!! Don't forget that it's great that those of you who have a couple extra bucks can send them but for those like myself where money is tight, old (yet functional) equipment is a great way to give. Like I said, I don't have an extra $100 but I had a Fin-nor ahab 16 reel that was used twice that I was able to give Ryan to ebay. All said and done,.... what comes around goes around and on behalf of the Lamb family, THANKS ALOT GUYS!

Deliberate Planning
Absolutely, 5 rods locked and loaded at all times. The baits will depend on the season and cycle but having them ready and rigged means time and time = more casts and more casts= more fish. More, more, more, more, more, more....oops, I think I just stole the new B.A.S.S. moto, lol

Standing in Jon Boat
The 3rd person is a pain regardless of what 12 you get but we stand in my buddys 1236 no problem. Not as stable as mine but definately do-able. I had a light duty 12 once where adding the seats did make it a bit tipsy. I had 15 inch pedestals but when I changed them to 7", it was much better. The pic below is the old light duty w/ the higher pedestals. THis boat is a no-no. Lower pedestals were a must. This boat was like riding a skateboard on ice. Just looking at this old pic makes me want to catch my balance!!

Crazy things fishing partners do
I have video that will crack you guys up. Short avi files of us out on the ice praying and burning things to the gods in January. Singing. Somthing we can't do so I change the words to apply to fishing.. The angling rapper. Commentaries on the night, etc. We have bottle rocket wars between the other boats from our team. Roman candles count. Ever been ambushed at 3am entering a cove,....cornered? We don't drink on the boat as a rule. Also as a rule, we are "420 club" card holders. Gold edition we wear different socks on purpose, shorts or not. Different colors too. Black dress sock with white jock sock, etc It is so true, so many funny moments are born on a boat. Whether born of boredom or just plain too many hours afloat, it's some hilarious stuff. Our next move is to get a voice recorder, like people use in meetings to tape the whole trip each time. There are so many funny things I've forgotten over the yrs (again, 420 club, lol) I don't want to lose those moments.
