  1. Here's my dilemma, I found a used but excellent condition rod FS locally and trying to justify the purchase. I do 90% of fishing out of my kayak and was really trying to keep it minimal on how many rods I take an outing. I was hoping to keep it at 4, maybe 5. Anyways, I can get a Mojo Bass 68MXF topwater for a steal, but don't really know if I can justify it as I have a very similar rod in the Avid. Could I use the Mojo for strictly topwater and relegate the Avid to Spinnerbaits/Buzzbaits? What would you all throw on the Avid and Mojo? I know I'll kick myself later for not buying it and I'll more than likely go get it today. Just looking for some advice on what to use it for, haha Here is my current kayak arsenal. St. Croix AVC 66MF St. Croix AVC 66MHF St. Croix Legend Glass CB 610 Dobyns 702 Fury spinning
  2. I try to buy local as much as possible, we have a great place in town and their prices are on par with big box stores (Cabelas and Sportsmans Warehouse) Only downside is they're sold out of very popular stuff at times. Otherwise, I use Ebay, TW and Amazon a lot.
  3. I'm similar, all my rods are Dobyns or St. Croix but reels are Shimano. Oh, and the real reason for the quote is I'm glad I'm not the only one upset about the disappearance of the St. Croix sale page. I have a few rods that I got a great deal on from there! Bummer Don't want to hijack the thread but curious on what rods and techniques you use? I'm strictly yak fishing now and trying to limit what I take. Right now I've got a Dobyns spinning rod and the rest St. Croix casting. I'd like to narrow it down to 4 setups to take, but 5 would work. I just find it sometimes cumbersome with 5 setups.
  4. That's the best way to do it haha. Good choice bud.
  5. First time dealing with TW labor day sale, what percentage off is it usually? I assume a lot of popular stuff is excluded?
  6. I've never tried the Lews so I really can't compare. I will say the Curado K is the nicest BC reel I've ever owned.
  7. Whoa bud, calm down. I was being sincere asking you about your opinion of the reel, no need to get hostile BRO. Sounds like I struck a nerve.
  8. I really like the KVD 1.5 and 1.0's in smaller creeks. I've been eyeing the 6th sense for a while too, probably grab some soon.
  9. Really? I have a few Nascis and not an issue? Why do you think they're junk?
  10. Sorry for bumping an older thread but I could use some advice. I'm getting ready to order some Yo zuri Hybrid for a jig/texas rig specific rod and BC reel. What # do you all recommend? I'll be fishing mainly creeks and smaller lakes, rock bottoms and some structure. Also, I'm decent with a baitcaster and have been practicing so slowly getting better. I'd like to get whatever casts easiest while still performing.
  11. Yeah, go with a ML/F or a M/F. I use a Dobyns 702sf dedicated for the Ned rig.
  12. Yeah, it really is a great lure. Glad you're having success with it. I just got a Ned rig specific rod and reel so I can always have one tied on. I went with the Dobyns 702 and Shimano Nasci 2500. I probably spent too much when like someone else said a stick with a string will catch fish with the ned rig. But it should last me forever and maybe pass along to my kids.
  13. Yeah, I've owned some Avid rods before, great rods and I got a deal I couldn't pass up on these. Just needed the cork cleaned a bit and good as new. I'm eyeing the SV just because I've never tried one.
  14. I'm slowly upgrading my gear as I've been doing a lot more kayak fishing over the past few months. I'm a self proclaimed St. Croix fan boy and just bought two used Avid rods. These will be fished 95% from my kayak, mostly streams and small ponds/lakes hence my preference for the shorter 6'6" length. I'm trying to take a maximum of 4 combos on the yak each trip. So, please help in my reel and lure selection. I already have a dedicated crankbait rod/reel setup and a dedicated ned rig, drop shot spinning combo. Both Shimano reels, Curado K for crankbait and Nasci 2500 spinning. Here is what I considered throwing on these two new Avid rods, let me know what you might do different. My question about the reel is should I spend the extra money on the Curado 201K or will I be happy with a lesser Shimano or Daiwa reel? I've never owned or even tried a Daiwa reel, always had Shimanos but I have an open mind after hearing and reading so many good things about them. Anyways, thanks for any suggestions or help, it feels great getting back into fishing after a small break, even though my wallet disagrees. Avid C66MHF- Jigs, Texas Rigs (7.4:1 reel) Avid C66MF- Treble hook topwaters, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, whopper plopper 90/110, jerkbaits (8.5:1 reel)

  16. Yes, do it. I'm a little envious, lol.
  17. So, I'm having a tough time making a decision. I can only buy one right now so I want to make sure I get the correct rod. I'll be doing 80% of my fishing from a kayak, so keep that in mind. I'm primarily looking for whopper plopper rod, only throwing 90 and 110 as 130 is too big IMO. I'm also in the market for a frog rod but as said earlier I'd love to have something I could use for all the above. I guess the 734 is the best option? I see people say this would work with a spinnerbait and chatterbait too. I'd be using braid, so if I went with the 734 what pound braid could I use for all the above mentioned baits. Also, I know this is a Dobyns specific thread but I see a lot of people throwing the whopper ploppers on a M/F rod and it's not offered in the Fury line. Would I be better off going with a M/F from say St. Croix? I'm really trying to stay in the $100-$120 range.
  18. What size do you order for the 90 WP? Also, if you have a suggestion for size on a 110 WP I'd like to change all mine out too. Thanks
  19. I'm also considering a Cashion kayak crankbait rod, let us know how you like it.
  20. I see these are in stock at several online retailers. Has anyone tried one yet? I'm shopping for a new 7' ML spinning rod for Ned rigs. Now I'm maybe reconsidering my Dobyns 702 purchase to try one of these. I'll be using it for only kayak fishing. Wonder if it's worth the $40 over the Dobyns?
  21. I'm in the same predicament right now but have decided to go with a dedicated ned rig rod and going to buy the Dobyns 702. I'll be using this rod 90% for a Ned rig and fishing from a kayak.
  22. Good thread, following as I'm getting ready to add a few new Dobyns Fury rods to my arsenal.
  23. You're not a true angler unless you go buy the most expensive Costas
  24. Same exact thing happened to me today in my yak. I thought I was going to skunk this morning from some guarantees in the creek, small crank or Senko and ended up throwing a ned rig after lunch. It was the first time using one, green pumpkin 1/10 and green pumpkin TRD. I'm a believer, but still lost 5 at the boat. Using Shimano 1500 spinning, 6'8 ML/xf
