larger reel?
Ok, I went to Cabelas today to test out some reels and I really liked the shimano symetre 3000, however they were out of stock. So I went over to dicks sporting goods and they had the symetre 3000, but it had a different handle on it. I prefer the smaller one as opposed to the t shaped one that usually comes on the larger reels. I wanted to ask someone who actually owns a symetre 3000 what handle it actually comes with. thanks in advance

larger reel?
I currently have two spinning rods that I use for bass fishing. However this year I plan on salmon fishing more often and need more line capacity for trolling. my current rod setup is as follows: Fenwick HMG MF with a quantum catalyst pti20 St Croix Premier MLF with a okuma epixor ef20a I would like to retire the epixor reel, and move the quantum over to the st croix. I need to find a larger reel for my Fenwick. The quantum served me well on the fenwick aside from the weight, making the rod feel unbalanced. I would like to find a reel that can get around 150 yards of 8# line, and is under 10 oz. My budget would be around 100. thanks for the help.

Any Mainers
Whats up guys! I'm from the portland area and fish often around sebago lake. I have a question for you guys, What is your go to bait? I have been reading a lot on here lately, and the techniques others use do not work for me particularly in the colder waters. I just wanted to get your opinions. Thanks!

yo-zuri hybrid question
Just a heads up. I recently order 3 1/4 lb spools. I got 2 of the 8# and one 20#. The 20# is on its way, but the 8 was backordered.

New crankbaits
Sam, what do you mean by "O" ring? should I take off the split ring and use a snap instead?

New crankbaits
should I get the original pointer, or the pointer DD? Also what warrent the use of shad raps, versus a pointer or x-rap?

New crankbaits
I'm in the process of buying new lures for the up coming season. I have a lot of spinnerbaits and cranks that got beat up last year. I replaced the spinnerbaits already but need help with the cranks. Last year I was skeptical about buying lucky craft lures, but this year I'm ready to try them. I will still buy some rapala shad raps and x-raps, but I want to buy a lc pointer 100 and possibly another lucky craft. My question is what color pointer is best for clear, deep, cold water? The bottom is rocky with a steep drop-off. Any other crankbait recommendations are welcome aswell.

First casts of 2009...and it felt GOOD!!!!!!!
I can only dream of that right now. I have nearly 2 feet of ice on the lakes right now. Last weekend was the ice fishing derby, with over 500 cars parked on one lake, it looked like a parking lot at the mall. I still have almost two months to wait...sigh....

Spring Cleaning

light line for spinning rod
Can anyone offer me some insight as to what exactly co-poly is? I realize its between mono and fluoro but what advantages does it have over either? I realize that fluoro sinks, is virtually invisible and stronger for its diameter than mono.

light line for spinning rod
I have never had a problem with line twist, just memory itself. The awful coils of line that appear when their is slack in your line. (like a slinky) I always close my bail manually too. I have used Trilene xl in 8#, trilene xt in 14#, and Sufix siege in 12#. They have all had trouble with this. If I stay below 8#, the memory is tolerable, but anything above is awful within a week.

light line for spinning rod
I have had trouble with memory with many types of mono. Including trilene xl and xt and sufix siege. Are co-polys better for memory?

light line for spinning rod
haha I know exactly what he going to say. But how does ultra soft work on spinning rods? I have heard that it can be stiff, which is not so good for spinning rods.

light line for spinning rod
I am an avid trout and salmon fisherman that has changed over to bass fishing in the last two years. Since I mainly fishing for trout and salmon most of my rods are spinning. I currently have two baitcasters, one with 20# braid, and the other that had 14# mono, but needs to be changed. I have one spinning rod, HMG with catalyst pti reel, that I use for both trout and bass fishing. I need a line that I can use for both, so it will have to be fairly light. I was thinking around 6-8#. My question is what type of line should I get? mono, co-poly or fluro? My main issue is that i have used many different lines in the past and have had trouble with memory. I have been reading about KVD line and lure and will definately try that. I still need a good line that I can fish for both species on a spinning reel. What do you guys think?

Fly rodding for river smallies
If you don't mind me asking, where on the river do you fish? I fished in the spring for trout up by the dam and had little luck. I would love to catch some smallies on that river.

Stumped...?
I am liking the sound of a jig, but what type of presentation is best for a steep drop? I read somewhere that crank baits can be used in a drop shot, would this work?

Stumped...?
Thanks for the replies, The pond is large, well over 100 acres. On one side, there is a rock shoreline that drops off immediately from the bank to about 30 feet of water. how do I get a bait down so quickly? On the other side there is a sandy type bottom with a few rocks and lots of debris like logs and trees, no grass or vegitation what so ever. I spent the day circling around the parimeter of the pond and was unable to find many fish. I mostly used a chart. spinnerbait as well as a bluegill shad rap.

Stumped...?
I have been fishing in my favorite pond all year long, starting in late april when the snow melted. I would catch an average of 5 to 10 fish per outing which was about 5 hours. I typically use spinnerbaits and crank baits. I have slowly started to realize that my catches have decreased as the year has gone on. I went out today, at 5:30, and fished all morning up and down the shoreline and got nothing. I saw one largemouth swimming far away into deeper water but that was it. On our way back to the boat launch we stopped to take a swim. We passed a little pier type thing so I decided to make a few casts with a senko. I ended up catching two small smallmouth, but 2 fish in 8 hours is not what I consider productive. what should I be doing differently? The pond doesn't the same as it used to be. It hasn't just happened once, rather a dozen times or so.

Pflueger on clearance
well based upon the original price, the color and the number of bearings I would say it is a purist, but I don't know for sure. It definately could be a dicks exclusive, but the only way to find out is to go back and check it out more. If it is the purist, then that sounds like a steal to me, but I have never used pflueger reels.

New Line
I have heard about yo-zuri line, where is this available? I would rather not have to buy it online.

Premium rods and reels for children?
I got my good first rod about 7 years ago when I was 10, a Fenwick HMG 6' M with a quantum catalyst pti, I have enjoyed fishing so much more with it. I have used friends and families equipment but its not the same. I have been upgrading all my equipment over the years to finally have a decent line of rods. I know I enjoyed myself more that my dad decided to buy me quality equipment. Its also nice to know that its nicer than any rod he owned up until recently when he bought himself an avid.

New Line
I have a quantum catalyst pti (CT20PTi) on a fenwick HMG 6' M rod.

New Line
what pound test would you recommend for mono and fluoro? The only reason I treied fireline was because I was curious to see what it was like. I don't fish in conditions that warrrant that type of line often. I usually fish in deeper water without vegitation, occasionally rocks.

New Line
I recently used fireline and hated it, so I went back to mono. I put berkley sensation 14# on my baitcaster and my spinning rod about two weeks ago. I have used them 3 times since and the line already has terrible memory with many coils. I am looking for a line that has very little to no memory and good feel. I want something around 15#. what do you guys suggest?

new rod power?
Right now I have 3 rods, 2 baitcasting and 1 spinning: 6'6'' M/M baitcaster (crankbaits) 5'6'' MH/F baitcaster (jigs/spinnerbaits) 6' M/F spinning (soft plastics) I am looking at a fenwick HMX 7' casting rod in either a H, MH, or M power/fast action. I would also be putting a shimano citica reel on it. What would be a smarter choice? My go to baits are spinnerbaits if that helps at all. My new setups would look like this: 6'6'' M/M baitcaster (crankbaits) 5'6'' MH/F baitcaster (jigs) 6' M/F spinning (soft plastics) New 7' baitcasting (spinnerbaits) how does that sound?
