  1. I like getting socks for Christmas. I usually ask for some every year. I remember getting a package of tube socks and underwear every year from my parents. I didn't think much of it then, but now I realize they were providing for me. I am forever grateful. . . and to know that they often did without to provide for my brother and I makes me even more thankful. I'm the same way, I do not mind getting socks or undies at all. Living in an apartment without W/D connects means making 3 or 4 trips a month to the laundromat, resulting in many, many lost pairs of socks. I swear, I have a box in my closet of unmatched socks, probably 20 of them in there. I spend probably $30 a month at Target on socks, I would love to get 5 or 6 pair for Christmas. I like when people get me things that I need, because then I can spend my own money on things I want ;D
  2. The salary depends on the city. In Austin, starting salary is around 45K, and in Chicago it's almost 60K after the probabtionary year. That is a lot higher than I always assumed police got paid, and high enough to live well.
  3. I would definitely agree that school's won't teach you nearly what you need to know, nor will they teach the subjects properly. The disparities between the way the Civil War is taught in northern schools vs. southern schools is a prime example. Not going to elaborate on that, as it would hijack the thread and probably start some arguments. Anyway, read as much as you can from both sides of any issue. Then you can decide your opinion. And that's the beauty of history: on most subjects, you can't be wrong as long as you make your point well. Back to Hitler though: I saw a History Channel special where they found a lot of his old home movies, which at the time could only be made without sound. They used a lip-reading computer and clips of him speaking to dub in his own words in his own voice into the videos. It was eerie how normal he was when hanging out with his friends and family.
  4. Thanks for all the feedback guys. I think that I have the disposition and temperament. I'm a landlord, after all, so on a daily basis I deal with very angry, argumentative people, and haven't let it get to me yet. I'm still, for the most part, a cheery person who sees people and the world for what it can be, not what it sometimes is. I think once I move I'll go talk to someone at the local station and get a little more information. It just to has to feel good to actually make a difference in a community, as opposed to reading the newspaper and complaining about it.
  5. I was under the impression that at the last OPEC meeting, Saudi Arabia told everyone else to kiss it, and that Saudi Arabia was not going to limit production. I also, though, have seen a small increase in local gas prices. Granted it's only about .03 a gallon, which only takes it up to $1.39 at last fill up, but I did worry that the prices were about to go back up.
  6. Anyone who is an officer or a retired officer, or someone who has relatives or friends that are officers: Would you recommend it as a career? I've been thinking about it a lot lately, and would be interested in hearing from some people who know what they're talking about. Thanks in advance.
  7. He could be a lot worse. Sure, he may run his mouth a little, but he's not carrying unlicensed pistols, discharging said unlicensed pistols in crowded areas, doing drugs, beating women, etc... Actually, except for the drama, he behaves the way we wish our athletes would... But on the field is a different story. I've never seen someone drop as many passes as he does, or put in such little effort on some downs/routes. Here's hoping the Cowboys go after Brandon Lafell or Demetrius Byrd from LSU in this upcoming draft. Those guys may not be gamebreakers, but they put in the work, that's for sure.
  8. Check out this news article about it, it's great: Political Corruption Smackdown: Louisiana vs. Illinois: http://www.slate.com/id/2206523/
  9. Exactly. Defense wins championships, the offense just sells the tickets.
  10. Why hasn't anyone mentioned the Cowboys yet? True, they had a rough start to the season, but they are playing some really physical ball right now. That front 7 on the defense is as good right now as any other team in the country. And now, they have a legitimate speed back in Tashard Choice to pair up with the power of Barber. And Flozell Adams only got called for one false start last game! They have a long way to go against some tough teams, but they are playing playoff style football now. If they get in, look for them to make a deep run into the playoffs.
  11. I'm going to go spend a week there, doing nothing all day but hopping in and out of cabs, trying to find the cash cab.
  12. I can't really think of anything in particular, but I'm sure it was clothes of some kind back when I was like 10. Funny thing is, now I wish people would buy me clothes.
  13. Yeah, some of the vocabulary in that show is pretty standard for the younger crowd. I personally blame that, as well as a lot of other deteriorating moral issues, on rap music. But all that aside, The Wire is the best tv show (even including the disappointing final season). ever. Nothing else comes close.

any BPS, cabela's and most hunting stores. It's used for a number of things... from predator hunting to rodent repellent. google... first link besides the story above: http://www.predatorpee.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=FU You're right. I'm in apartment management, and I'll let you in on an industry secret: If you rent, and you have a possum/raccoon/rodent problem, chances are it's too expensive to fix. So we send a maintenance man out there with a bottle of coyote urine and it will scare them away for a while. Another trick for rodents in walls: Take a turkey baster or cajun "flavor injector" and fill it up with cayenne pepper, make some small holes in your sheet rock, and shoot that between the walls. It gets rid of most rodents, and has the added benefit of not making your house smell like coyote urine
  15. PETA fuel, no matter how many people were there hunting, that many dead deer all in one spot will look bad.
  16. I don't understand why not to do it. The car companies are stuck in a catch-22. If people don't buy the cars, they will need the bail out. But no one is going to buy a car from a company that may not exist in 2-3 years; so much for warranties and maintenance and parts. Sure, I hate seeing all that money go to private companies as much as anyone else, but one way or another it's going to get spent. If the 5 million people who are employed by the big-3 lose their jobs, the government will end up paying them unemployment benefits and everything else, which will probably cost more in the long run. Besides, every other country with an auto industry is at least partially invested in the industry. The federal bank of Japan actually decides how many Hondas and Toyotas get made every year. How can we expect our own companies to compete without help?
  17. The weather records always surprise me. Everytime I experience a pretty extreme bit of weather, I look up the record and realize that what I just experienced was nothing compared to the record. Although we had 18" of rain in 6 hours last summer, and I feel like that has to be a record, at least for central Texas.
  18. As Seinfeld said: Imagine how that would look to aliens. They must think that dogs are the higher life-forms. Why else would we pick up after them
  19. I vote for Tebow as well. I live in Austin, am a huge fan of Colt (and not just because he has the most perfect name that a Texas QB could ever have), but I think Tebow is just more valuable to his team. He elevates the level of play of everyone else, and picks up any slack out there, like during the SEC championship game. Of course, Colt is responsible for 70% of his team's offense, so I guess he's pretty valuable to his team too. Put another way, that's 7 out of every 10 yards that wouldn't have happened without Colt.
  20. I was taught to put the comma before the "and," and I think it works better that way. As a reader, it is easier to identifiy that you are reading a list.
  21. My problem was always editing enough out of my papers. They seemed to always be too long, which many professors will penalize more harshly than if it's too short. I just get into a zone when I'm writing papers, and don't stop until my stream of consciousness ends. Which is normally two hours and 10,000 words later. Yeah, I tend to ramble sometimes.
  22. The lawyers didn't get to him soon enough. But seriously, that is cool. I hadn't come across that story yet
  23. Why? You don't like to read? :-? ;D ;D ;D
  24. Yeah, we got the same storm in Austin last night. It was weird, like actually raining ice. Not sleet, and not hail. Like flat, wide, long, thin sheets of ice. Some seemed like the size of my hand, just falling from the sky. Really cool, actually.
