  2. I found this to be the most friendly place and a wealth of knowledge can be found here.
  3. I had heck with braided line maybe because I was using spiderwire. after several different suggestions from members here I went with Yozuri Hybrid 10# test and love the heck out of it, so what you do not want and do not send to skillet you sure can send my way :-)
  4. I am glad you asked this, I was wondering the same and I am looking forward to seeing what responses you get.
  5. Your best bet is a fish basket, you may need a couple because if you get a PB there is not alot of room in them for more than a couple fish. If you will be doing this long term on a regular basis you may look into an ice chest on wheels, rig up an small aerator and make a portable live well. All my fishing is from the bank and have thought about doing this. However since I am not fishing tournaments right now I just catch take a pic and release.
  6. I strongly suggest not to store plastic baits directly into the worm wallet bags, they are not perfectly sealed and the oil will ooze through the seams and mess up everything, get freezer bags to store the baits and the worm wallet to store the freezer bags. Will do! thanks
  7. Thanks for the clarification, I appreciate the input and feel better about using mineral oil. Do you think freezer bags will work for storage or would it be better to buy one of those worm wallets from walmart
  8. I had heard mineral oil would leech the color out of worms, is this true? I ask because I was ignorant and bought a crap load of worms a couple of months ago and I took them out of their bags and put them in plastic boxes in my tackle box, they started drying out, so now I want to put them back into some sort of storage system and re-oil them. If mineral oil is not good for them, what oil is used when originally packing them and can general public this oil?
  9. WOW, I think I'd probably pass out to catch a hawg that size.... Nice Job!!!!!!!!!!!!
  10. Well I have sat back and read all the posts on this thread and it just makes me that much more glad I stuck around. As has already been mentioned, great tone, great feedback from both sides of the coin. I asked in sincerity and I got my answers and even learned A LOT along the way. I understand both view points now and I have a new found respect for catch and release. Thanks to everyone that responded and even bigger thanks for keeping it friendly and not making anyone feel bad for their opinion. I have a great respect for each of you and appreciate each view point. so to sum up my rambling post.... THANKS AND THANKS AND THANKS AGAIN great feed back and keeping it friendly and honest at the same time.
  11. I am a non-boater wisturkeyhunter is correct. I use a lot of maps to look for old oil field roads that lead close to the lake and such. A LOT of walking for sure...

    welcome
  13. I just love the sport of it, the challenge, and it gets me away from everyday pressures of work and such.
  14. I toy around on the Mandolin, love to play bluegrass, Jazz, and some blues... still teaching myself.
  15. ahhh.... learn something new everyday :-) So it is not so much the fact of keeping it is keeping the big ones that offends some here, I can see and understand that now - thanks. I have to agree cleaning the fish is a pain but for us it is worth it because we love the taste. I also have to agree the larger fish do not taste as good as the smaller. I do not mind practicing catch and release at all, actually enjoy it. I was just unaware of the practice until now. Sure I will probably keep a few here and there but now that I understand more, it will be just the smaller ones. The large ones will be turned back loose. I have to agree with this advice. thanks for the input thus far, I am starting to understand it more, I hope other "newbies" will as well....
  16. I by no means want to make enemy's here, nor am I trying to stir up controversy, I bring this up seeking sincere understanding. I am relatively new to fishing -somewhat. I remember as a young child my dad was laid off a lot and I do remember fishing some as a child with my dad and keeping what we caught for food. Even the neighbor would bring 10 - 20 fish a weekend for us to clean and put in freezer for food. Fast forward to present, the first few fish I caught I kept, until I made a post hear showing one of the biggest ones my wife caught and we kept to eat. There were some post saying I should release and not keep to eat. I just about felt guilty and almost decided to forget this forum/group. I now release all we catch but I still wonder what harm there is in keeping a few here and there for food. I love the taste of a well cooked and prepared bass. I personally see no harm, but say it does offend others when bass are kept and eaten and someone wants to encourage others to catch and release, there is a tactful way of doing this without making anyone feel bad especially if they were not aware of the catch and release philosophy? I was one such person, I never heard of catch and release until looking for info on the internet about bass fishing and I came across this forum. I just hate how some posts sound almost hateful, maybe it is just me, but I think there is way to introduce those that are unaware of catch and release and still come across as friendly - just my opinion. By the way I am so glad I stuck around a wealth of information and great people and fun humor along the way... you get it all here and I love it.
  17. oh hell, I fell for it hook, line and sinker (pun intended), even was telling my fishing buddies at work about it... I am more upset that I didnt think of it first...
  18. Here are few good articles on cleaning fish, including proper handling between catching and cleaning: http://www.fishingkites.co.nz/cleaning-fish/fishindex.htm http://www.fishingkites.co.nz/cleaning-fish/fishindex.htm http://www.ohiodnr.com/Home/FishingSubhomePage/how_to_fishplaceholder/fishingfilletfshfilletfish/tabid/6118/Default.aspx These articles should answer most questions about cleaning a fish.
  19. I also live about 8 miles from the lake I fish at regularly. I am a bank/shore fisherman so I usually have to wait until they open the guard shack gate. So I get up about 4:30 and shower, read some scripture and then at the lake by 6am.
  20. I was going to ask this similar question about books, glad to see someone has and it is awesome to see some great feedback. I think once a list is compiled it should be stickied or put in the knowledge base somewhere and I think the list should be divided into groups of "technical/scientific" and "how-to". I look forward to seeing the responses to this question. Thanks for asking the question dieselaw!
  21. Welcome to the group!
  22. To be honest not sure, all the info has worn off It looks like it was once black in color but now it is all bare metal (silver) showing. It is pretty heavy but works pretty decent. Someday I would like to get a better quality newer reel, but for now it does the job. To all on here, I appreciate your input/feeback. on suggestion I have been reading the info on here about lines, who knew something as simple a fishing line could have so much info and be so complicated. I think I might try some fluorocarbon this weekend...
  23. Here is a diagram http://www.bassresource.com/fish/texas.html
  24. I was not as fortunate or knowledgeable as the others. I cannot remember how many times I had to change lines but it was more than 3 or 4 times. I had heck learning to cast without bird nest. I had no one to show me and I did not find this group until recently so I had no idea what knobs did what on the reel and I guess I had the reel free spinning totaly open and man was it a mess. Now I have learned after much aggravation but it was worth it and having found this forum and site has been a God send... I have learned alot in a short period of time. Best advice.... just keep practicing but do not let it steal your joy... when it gets aggravating take a break and try another reel (spinning or spin cast).
