  1. I use my fingers if the gill opening is large enough because when working in a tight spot trying to grab the hook through the gills with pliers, it can be very easy to accidentally pinch the gills, especially if the fish kicks at all.
  2. Hmm. I've been trying to tell my fiance that after we get married we should get a boat before having kids because once we have kids we won't be able to afford the boat. Maybe I should switch tactics and let the kids do the persuading lol.
  3. I use the 7'MHF mojo for frogs. Never used it for any other topwaters, I prefer a 6' or 6'6"medium power rod for topwaters with treble hooks
  4. Momma won't take him out?
  5. This belongs in the malapropisms thread.
  6. Did you hear about the guy who had a stroke that caused the left side of his body to be paralyzed? He's all right now.
  7. Its personal preference. Some guys use just enough to cover the spool, while others will fill more than 1/2 the spool with backing line. I used to fill most of the way with backing to try to stretch how many reels I could fill with a spool of braid, but I found that after a few breakoffs, I was casting down to my backing and getting more backlashes due to the line catching on the knot, so next time I respool my reels I use braid on I will be removing some of the backing and spooling on more braid per reel.
  8. There's two reasons why I use a leader with braid: Abrasion resistance around rocks, and (in)visibility in clear water. Up until last year I only used mono for leaders, but last summer I started experimenting with fluoro leaders in 8# for spinning gear and 12# for casting gear. I usually tie relatively long leaders, like 6-7'. This way I can change lures or trim and retie damaged line several times before I have to tie another leader, which I do when the leader gets down to 12-15" or so. If I'm drop shotting, I'll tie an even longer leader, like 10 feet or more, to account for the long tag end going to the weight from the hook.
  9. The only reel company you're gonna find that on is Ardent.
  10. I voted for nylon mono, because it's what I use most often with treble hook lures, although sometimes I will use braid or braid with a fluoro leader. Last year was my first using fluoro as a leader, and I've never used fluoro as a mainline for anything, although I'm considering trying it this year.
  11. It never occurred to me not to fish all the way to the boat, and I've had too many strikes right at the boat to see that changing anytime soon.
  12. It's sad that they had to ruin a perfectly good classic car just to prove that engineering is working how it's supposed to to the "They don't make 'em like they used to, them old cars were tanks!" crowd.
  13. My job requires 24/7/365 staffing, and it is understood that everyone is always on-call if someone calls in sick. However, just because you may be called at any time does not mean you are required to go in. If I get a voicemail or text asking me to go in and I cannot, I usually call back and say so, but there have been times where I did not and did not feel guilty about it.
  14. Casette tapes. I have a tape deck in my car still, so whenever I'm in a goodwill I'll go through the tapes and see if there's anything I like. HAve gotten some pretty good stuff over the years for $0.50-$2.00. your post reminded me of this video:
  15. I have the 7'MHF spinnerbait rod, and I love it. Rarely if if ever use it for spinnerbaits though, 90% of the time it has either a texas rig, jig, or frog tied on. As far as being tip heavy, I find it balances pretty well with a reel in the 8oz range, but it did feel a bit awkward when I tried my Carbonlite (the old gold one) on it.
  16. Why do I not believe this coming from a guy named root beer?
  17. I've cut back significantly on commercially available sodas, but I got my mom one of those sodastream machines for christmas and since then and I've been making my own pop by carbonating water and adding different kinds of fruit juice.
  18. Do you know anywhere you can get copies of this for cheap? I just looked on amazon, $52.00 for a used book is pretty steep. Then again, I paid 3x that for some books in college that I never even opened, and I would actually read this one...
  19. They're hands down my favorite live bait for smallmouth. I'll have to check out the case helgies, as i didn't there was a soft plastic version available.
  20. My fiance recently moved to Columbia from Rochester, NY. I am planning on going down there to visit her for several weeks in May after my semester ends, and I was wondering about any good spots for bank fishing. I know Lake Murray is close, but don't know anything about any other waters, or if Murray has any spots with good public access for bank fishing. I probably can't afford a guide, but if anyone knew anything about boat rentals on Murray or anywhere else close that would be appreciated as well. Thanks.
