Job Site Slang
Every career, business or job has it's own jargon. My main business was scrap ferrous and non ferrous metals, plastics, paper and precious metals. Material handling equipment, transportation (trucks as well as logistics) is an important component too. I doubt anyone not associated with metals would care what " bushling" means or why some steel items are exactly the same but have a different value. Quick explanation, it's size, the smaller the more it's worth(except turnings), get more weight in a truck reducing the trucking cost per ton. Construction site terms, not the foggiest idea.

Why No Stripers In The Settings?
Stripers are a really nice fish to catch, much like the snook we have here in Florida. They average about the same size but stripers have the potential to get larger, caught my share stripers off Montauk on L.I.

I Was Betting Against Landing This One
A school of Jacks were busting, looked like a tsunami smashing against a sea wall. First cast with no strike, then I cast under a dock with my 8' rod, and bam fish on. The drag was just singing, didn't think the fish would ever slow down, finally it did. Standing on a sea wall with boat ramp beside me I was hoping my line would hold, a tumble backwards would have been quite a drop. Luckily I had respooled yesterday and wanted to try out 20# stealth braid, pretty nice stuff. Quite a battle and I wasn't sure I was going to land it, the jack was swimming near a cement pylon, eased up on the drag and let it swim away from the obstruction. Gaining ground on the fish I walk gingerly back down the side of the boat ramp, back on solid ground I pull it up the boat ramp, I had no net.

How Do You Determine Leader Size For Braid?
I keep it pretty simple, open water bass fishing I use 10# braid and 10# leader, heavy vegetation it's 15# braid and 20# leader. Saltwater I double the line: 10 braid = 20 leader 15 " 30 " 20 " 40 " I never use steel when targeting toothy fish, I should with some species but I don't. Last mullet run I lost about 20+ lures in a few weeks from cutoffs, but I caught a lot of fish too, it was worth it.

Opinions Wanted
Being on the right body of water at the right time can make almost anyone a superstar, equipment is secondary. I've got a Daiwa rod, with a $35 Shakespere agility size 30 reel, I only use this set up for jig fishing. I have landed as many 6-8# fish as any thing else I own. The reel is as smooth as any other reel I have, the drag is questionable, in fact not very good. Nicer rods and reels are more enjoyable, there is a limit to what I think is needed for me. Not only do I bass fish but do much more saltwater fishing, I've got $100 spinning reels and $100 rods that have been catching almost anything swimming for many years with near perfect performance.

Peacock Spots In Miami-Broward
Thanks for the info, I'm going to try and head down that way later in the week. A buddy of mine, has been catching 5 pounders( I've seen the pics) in a place he calls the fingers. I am not familiar with any place in the Miami area. Have caught snook 441 and Griffin, haven't been back in years.

What Is The One Thing You Absolutely Hate About Fishing?
I hate bass fishing in muck, slime, heavy vegetation and lily pads. I love fighting a fish, but a tug of war with a plant, ain't for me anymore. Wind I like, helps to keep the bugs away, tells me what species I'm going to target and where I'm going to go. I hate casting into busting fish that are so fast by the time your lure gets there, they are gone. I hate castnets and bait fishermen. I can't say I hate people that analyze every 30 seconds, carry 20 rods and 12 tackle bags, because I wouldn't fish with them in the first place. I hate people from the NE corridor that all they can talk about are stripers ( like there aren't any fish in Florida worth catching), then they catch their first jack or tarpon and STFU, I love that.

Accidental Catches
I've had many unusual and accidental catches, from trumpet fish to snagging a manatee and a manta ray, but 1 stands out for me above all others. I caught permit from shore in a place where there are no permit, caught it on a bucktail, crabs are the usual bait for them. I had to run this fish down on foot nearly 300 yds (I paced it off later) to avoid being spooled, and it wasn't a big one either. This fish is in my all time top 10 list of favorites, there is just nothing like a permit that I have ever caught.

Can't Put Old Reels On New Rods
If I buy a new rod I'll put a new reel on it, have no reservations about putting a new reel on an old rod.

Where Are The Fish?
It's been pretty quite around here, but yesterday it heated up. Hit the canal behind my home for about 90 minutes, some nice sized ones too maybe 22" or so. Everything caught on a weedless fluke, just too much muck for my tastes.

Going To Bed

Done With Bass Pro Shop
Any company doing 4 billion a year in sales and growing, must be doing something right. Companies with this type of stature employ other companies specializing in all sorts of behind the scenes activities, like demographics for store locations. For the most part a simple polite "no thanks" goes a long way in not having to deal with them. From personal experience there have been times I wasn't in the mood for them, I was curt for no real reason other than wanting to be left alone. Other times I've been more gregarious and enjoyed a short conversation. How the interaction goes is usually whether I'm feeling carefree or have a wild hair up my posterior. These people are only trying to make a buck and BPS is only trying to make more money, for me it's best just to accept it for what is and no more.

Dunked A Reel
Clear water doesn't mean the water is clean, I'd service the reel.

Dear Raider,
Free advice is worthy exactly what it costs. When I do need advice I ask my wife, that always costs me something.

Pb Peacock- Any Weight Estimates?
Been trying to clear some time to head south for them. March is my most unenjoyable fishing month, lost my interest in bass fishing for the season (I'll get it back next November) and saltwater hasn't perked up yet. For the record, 15 #+ jacks having been cruising the ICW, just never know where or when they will show up, caught only one so far.

When Is A Fish No Longer Considered A "dink" In Your Opinion?
I don't carry a scale either, never been hung up on size or what my personal best is. I'm more interested in fish species that fight harder, that's more fun for me than the actual size.

When Is A Fish No Longer Considered A "dink" In Your Opinion?
Depending where one lives and what other fish are targeted, for me catching a bass that looks to be about 3# is just ho-hum. I have the same ho-hum feeling about a 10# snook or a 30" barracuda, nothing to be doing a cartwheel over. Fun to catch yeah, but they're dinks.

If you think BPS pesters you about time shares, don't go to a Mexican resort area or even Disney, they come in a pitch while you're having dinner. When I go to BPS I'm focused on why I'm there, buy what I want and leave. I do know a couple of guys that work in the fishing department, I see them at the jettie, can't complain about my experiences there. I don't buy on line from them too often, don't care for their shipping rates, I will buy their hot lips bucktail jigs which is still cheaper and more convenient than driving 40 miles each way. Not that I'm ranting because I just delete the emails without reading them, the subscription tackle sites are always sending me something. They carry nothing I want.
