  1. Avet does not make a spinning reel, there has been talk for the last few years, so far it's just b/c. I do believe just about every Avet is available both RH & LH. These reels are all lever drags (once used people fall in love with lever drags) without level winds. Not only are these reels used for trolling, drifting, and bait fishing but to my surprise how many people use them for surf combos casting and retrieving lures. I will cast lures with mine every now and then just to stay proficient with a bait caster.
  2. If I really thought about it I could remember many situations where I was a bit nervous to say the least. I was camping on the shores of Little Lake Dozier in Ontario, at first light a moose comes walking thru our campsite. Words cannot describe the situation, these animals can be downright nasty, soiled my undies but good. Spending lots of time on the water in the Great Lakes from an early age with my dad, he pretty well prepped me. As long as I was with him I was never scared. I crewed on sailboats in the Great Lakes and competed in several Mac races, cautious and careful yes, nervous no. Couple of years ago fishing in a 21' Polar a squall came up with some very strong winds, high waves and rain coming in sideways. The bite turns on, sailfish and kingfish on solid for an hour or so, basically we were stuck out there so we fished, didn't really think about the weather. What I am scared about is freshwater fishing, no it isn't the fish it's the snakes. Had a moc a couple feet way from me not long ago and then I ran into a guy that got nailed by one, in a place he said he was catching 8 lb peacocks. It just ain't worth it to me, I won't be doing to much freshwater fishing anymore, snakes got me scared crapless, I'd rather be in rough weather than tangle with those things.
  3. That's true. Not saying this is the case but sometimes raw parts like aluminum or copper stock are bought through a broker and not directly from the mill. A maker of a reel may want a particular aluminum alloy that is not available thru their local channels, they turn to brokers to shop the item for them. Again, this may not be the case but is possible.
  4. Species has a lot to do with it, muskie like bigger baits, bigger barracuda like tubes that are about 15" in length. Tarpon on the other hand can be caught on 1/4 - 1/2 oz bucktail or flies I'd say it's more species orientated than the size of the fish. I caught a spinner shark guessing about 80# on 1/2 oz storm wild eyed shad, wasn't the only time with a small swimbait.
  5. Have had 6-10 bull sharks surrounding a 21' boat while catching bonita, a bit unnerving.
  6. I don't get technical over anything, either I like a line or I don't. I have had very few problems with any braid except supercast. I put both 12# and 20# to the test over a period of time on spinning gear, 12# was for bass and 20# was strictly for barracuda. At first I liked the line, smooth, quiet, casted fine, but my opinion changed rapidly once line twist became noticeable. I didn't like the coating coming off, despite the claim of not losing strength I didn't trust it and always cutting back the ends, the coating and twist issue were my complaints. Knot strength seemed no better or worse than any other braid, the line itself I found to be weaker than PP, but in fairness it was strong enough. Catching 30-40# cudas in open water line strength is not an issue, knowing how to use your drag is. I just felt uneasy using the line and for my kind of fishing I have choices I'm more confident with.
  7. Why I have bought anything other than a Pflueger is starting to become a mystery to me. I own 5 of them, 2 supreme mg strictly for bass, 1 supreme mg for snook and other inshore fish, a medalist and arbor both used for barracuda, that fish will put some wear and tear on a reel. None have seen a repair or service shop for any reason, other than a drop of oil nothing is needed for these reels to perform like new.
  8. My wife doesn't fish at all. There are 2 women that I know one in her 40's the other mid 50's. They both throw cast nest and sabikis to catch live. They both cast lures as well as men, I have seen both handle 40" snook and tarpon many times. I've been with the older woman and her husband on their boat catching kings, dolphins and other offshore species, she handles that gaff like a charter captain, pretty good at the helm too. Not many men out fish either one of these ladies.
  9. Shimano's TLD is graphite and has been a very well respected reel, especially with charter captains. Certainly not their top end but built like Sherman tank. Avet reels made in California.
  10. The smartphone for me was just the next step in progression of being in mobile communication. My first mobile phone was in the 80's, proved to be very valuable, not having to look for a phone booth to contact a customer and especially in an emergency situation. Over 20 years later I'm on my 3 rd smartphone. I don't utilize most of what can be done but I wouldn't want to live without it. One nice feature is google earth or Bing maps, or just talking into the phone to get directions.
  11. I'm not either. When something happens once it may be the other persons fault, twice could be a coincedence, 3 or more oe has to look at themself as the problem. We have read that Raider has not gotten along with employers, then fellow employees, now an episode of disrepect to an owner in his own establishment. I suggest that you might be your own problem. Always some one out there your match or better. My former partner who stands 6'4 270# and was a martial arts instructor who could crush skulls like an eggshell (back in our prime), never saw him bully anyone, no point to it.
  12. If a rod or even braided line is not in your budget at the present time, try adjusting your drag just a little tighter. Holding the spool with your hand on spinning or a thumb on the spool with a b/c will work too. If possible fish a moving bait with exposed hooks, a fish coming after a lure may strike hard enough to set the hook itself, as opposed to a weedless presentation where the strike isn't as hard.
  13. A BPS card is no different than any other Visa or Mastercard except BPS gives rewards points for purchases, that card can be used just about anywhere. Some smaller businesses will have a minimum purchase amount for credit card use, very few companies are going to turn away business for the sake of 3% on higher ticket item. Credit cards promote spending, it's interest free money if paid in full on the due date. Debit cards are fine providing the funds are in the account at the time of purchase, I'm sure that is not the case with all people.
  14. Doesn't make a bit of difference what you do, just a preference. I can give reasons why backing is a good idea and I can give reasons why I never use it anymore, I have caught lots of fish both ways. How often does a bass run out 50 yds of line.............never, and many times that bass swims back at you, makes a good case for using backing to save a little money. The opposing view for me is the places I fish plays havoc on the line itself, I get a lot of line twist with certain lures, that causes windknots that I often cut out, I'd be down to that backing quicker than I'd like. For $15 I've got a fresh spool of braid which is more important to me than buying 2 lures or maybe only 1 that I really don't even need. Pick your method.
  15. I don't snag spoons for bass because I don't fish them around rocks, I use bottom baits for that kind of fishing. I don't use anything much heavier than 1/4 oz spoons for bass. I use heavier spoons, more different ways to fish them, and more varieties of them in saltwater.
  16. Convenience for me, I drive by Boca Bearings nearly every day, live a few minutes away. I even have a fishing spot almost behind their building.
  17. I've got an app on my smartphone, I play it on the jettie when there are a lot of people. It's the sound of a reel striping out a lot of line with voices saying " fish on"..............get's them every time, lol.
  18. Why am I not surprised. Especially in shallow saltwater conditions the 2 most used lures I ever see being used, including myself, are spoons and bucktail jigs. Only real reason I use other items is for the sake of variety, they don't catch any more fish. The only caveat is in regards to a few species where other lures are usually more productive, a case in point is tarpon. Never caught one on a spoon, but many caught on bucktails. The bucktail absolutely rules as the #1 producer for just about all inshore fish, I use the same ones for bass and peacocks too. I have on hand at all times 20-40 bucktail jigs and maybe 20 or so spoons. A redfish key spoon by Wahoo is one of my favorites for bass.
  19. Geo g, smacked the nail on it's head. In my community I used to out every day and catch quality bass, no more. Our HOA goes spray crazy now and Palm Beach County forces us to buy reclaimed water that they pump in. Once this program started a few years ago it killed the fishing here. I have a beautiful canal behind my home, fishing was very good. LWDD comes in and dredges to increase water flow, the fish disappear. Fish are back and people have access on other side and throw cast nets, fishing has become tough, going to change as there is a community being built so there won't be any road access.
  20. Assuming you meant using................ Just get a cash back card and you can use it wherever you want. I know AMEX has a good one right and i am personally suing the capital one quicksilver card. I use it to pay for daycare each month and other normal expenses and the rewards add up pretty fast. I also like i can log in to one spot and then handle my credit card or rewards and have options of sednign me a chcek, doanting to charity (i think) or applying it to my bill. So far so good.... No reason to cancel, just get a new card and don't use the BPS.
  21. Sewer takes top honors................
  22. Doesn't have to be a fluke, been using a drop fly rig for tarpon and snook for years, same concept as a double fluke rig, drop fly works for bass too.
  23. My wife doesn't care to play golf or fish..............I'm thrilled.
  24. Even your vivid imagination could not comprehend what's like down here. Throw in vacationers and snowbirds, estimates put at 500,000 in Broward and 150,000 in Palm Beach in season...............0-60 mph takes like a week.
