  1. All it takes to get a strike is a ripple, I've had bass hit top lures while they were stationary and I was getting a windknot unraveled. I've had snook hit top waters lures just from the surf pushing it around, I use the identical lures for both salt and freshwater. They all work, I don't have favorites. As of late I have been using nothing but poppers, I either use a 1/2 oz poppa dog or a 1 oz Storm Chug a bug depending on my rod selection, I buy these 2 because they are real easy to find.
  2. Many species of fish that came into our market were not gutted at sea before being boxed & iced. We wholesaled out fish plus had a retail counter as well. Once we cleaned the fish for them, as they do in markets today, the fish was wrapped in butcher block type paper, fish held up fine until customers got home to refrigerate. Personally fish I catch are cleaned at a fillet station at the marina, then I pack them in a cooler with ice for the drive home, probably be fine if I just wrapped them and got them home with 45 minutes or so.
  3. Do some research to see how long fish at a market have been out of water and are still good to eat ( gutted and iced), you would be surprised at the length of time. Think that commercially caught lake Superior Whitefish or Lake Erie Pickeral ( walleye) from Canada, or Salmon and many other varieties of ocean fish like flounder were caught yesterday, Then packed on ice, offloaded, trucked to the airport, flown to your city, offloaded, trucked to a wholesaler, then shipped to your local market, then into the display case, all done in a matter of hours...............ain't so. My dad was in the biz for 35 years.
  4. I get offshore 1-2 times a week so a gaff is must have equipment, only use it when we keep a fish. Nets are equally important, we catch fish too big to hand handle that we release. I was using a collapsible net for snook, it didn't last too long, it broke. I don't carry a pier net, they smell too much after only 1 fish, then it stinks up my garage, I just hope some one else has one. lol
  5. I'd be real happy not having a hurricane.
  6. To say a net is not sporting is pure unadulterated nonsense! There are many times I wish I had net with me while fishing off a sea wall or offshore fishing, especially for out of season fish that must be released. IMO regardless of the type of boat used "dragging" some of those smallish fish in with the heaviest of tackle is not my idea of fishing.
  7. They best not play " Another one bites the dust" all over the radio.
  8. There are always some that look down at what other's fish for. I've seen many a trout fisherman snub a bass or pike fisherman, even look down at saltwater anglers. Some bass fishermen look down their noses at walleye anglers, I don't understand it but to each their own. We catch fish down here some call trash, I call them sport, hard fighting that will test your skill and your equipment, some are horrible to eat and others absolutely delicious. There are trash fish I'd rather catch than gamefish, I'm there for the fun of it.
  9. Saw about a dozen of these hanging over a sidewalk leading to the beach, made me a bit nervous, they were huge.
  10. Not lately, that's for sure.
  11. Hand me the rod on a 40# juvie and see how much fun I'll have, be happy to let you do the work............lol
  12. As mentioned before Catt knows the area and his advice is right on. I fish saltwater every day and have done so thruout the world, General inshore rule, find the bait you have found the fish, If the fish are feeding the baits are not really that important, they hit anything, but day in and day out nothing beats a spoon..............period. What we are experiencing in certain parts of Florida is too much bait, and using artis is a tough go, I casted 4 or 5 times this week into a mullet frenzy ( snook and tarpon everywhere) for over 45 minutes with everything in the bag and not a strike, this is not uncommon. This is the most exciting time of the year in South Florida, bait fish are coming in, the weather is getting rough and windy from the NE which brings in the fish. First to arrive are the lady fish, this year they have been exceptionally big for that species. Ladyfish, aka poormans tarpon, are great fun, only 5# but make runs like bonefish, but not shy like bonies. Soon to come in will be bluefish and jacks, jacks can run upwards of 40#, they are the ultimate warrior.
  13. Probably have caught way more on the first cast than the " last cast". Sometimes it's the kiss of death, sometimes not. Not my first cast today but the first in a totally different body of water, maybe 15# or so, not another strike until later in the day when I went bass fishing. Yesterday we were catching them on almost every single cast, but that was yesterday.
  14. Just about any gamefish will hit a spoon, I use them 12 months of the year.

Want to know the moon phase?....................Just look at it. I start my fishing at 3 or 4 in the morning, I don't care what the moon is doing I'm going fishing anyway, but if I had a choice it would be a new moon. Experience is your best teacher, and experience has taught me feeding time is more important than lure selection, when they're on they're on ! and when off they get real uninterested. This morning the fish started to feed about 5:30 and stopped about 7:30, I caught them on bucktails, spoon, xrap and using a top lure in 20 mph winds and 4' waves. I change baits not to catch more fish but to vary my routine. Many times I go out and catch nothing, that's fishing.
  16. Spinning rod? I would use what I already owned, you may not like the rod. Rod is probably along the lines a ul or light action 4-8 line and 1/8-1/2 lure, but no where is written that one must stay within those parameters.
  17. You don't need fans in Detroit to set it on fire, everyone is torch crazy.............67' riots and the yearly Devils Night. Grimlin knows what Devil's Night is.
  18. Grass carp, white amur, are stocked and they are original from China where they grow to 100#, not near as big here. Both fertile and steralized are planted for weed control, in 6 years I've only caught 2 on artificial lures, guys use berrys to catch them. Some say they hurt the bass population, I can't attest to that 1 way or the other.
  19. Two major issues have killed Detroit. Firstly a change in the political structure around 1970 and secondly the demise of the American auto industry. Both the introduction of foreign cars and business being globalized( outsourcing) was the demise. Up until the early 90's Detroit was a worker's and businessmen's dream, owners made tons of money and employees earned hefty salaries, coupled with a relative low priced housing market. Detroit has tried a number of things but they all fail, to the credit of Cleveland and Baltimore the city fathers are bringing those cities back.
  20. I was born and raised in Detroit and lived there until 6 years ago. Detroit has been in a steady decline since 1967, the automobile companies built that city. From a population just shy of 2 million to well under a million now the neighborhoods were beautiful, with well maintained homes. Some areas like Palmer Woods, Rosedale Park, waterfront areas where the Manoogian Manison ( mayor's residence) are still great. But the grand old areas like Boston Blvd, Indian Village and WSU cultural area have decayed terribly. At one time o live and work there was something special, but alas no more, I'm afraid the city will never comeback, despite the attempts being made, makes me real sad. For you fishing guys, not only close to the great Lakes, but hundreds of inland lakes within minutes of the city. Until about 30 years ago mostly summer cottages with public boat access but that has gone as well, now many of these lakes are private with year round residencies. Yeh, it's time to burn it down.
  21. Not brand loyal, whatever is most comfortable that's what I buy. I also wear a 7 1/2 and that's hard to find size, I will not buy on line as sizes are never exact. For beach fishing, open sandals, crocs and aquamesh shoes fill up with sand, never barefoot especially in the dark as all kinds of things wash up on shore. Shore fishing, comfortable sneaker, usually with socks , fire ants are killers down here. Boat action, I like sneaker style boat shoes, catching these fish that take you on a 360 around the boat, good support and traction is a must for, not too mention just keeping your balance in 4-5' waves.
  22. We have grass carp in Florida, they are actually the largest member of the minnow family, guys target them with fly rods.
  23. 40# is a big fish anywhere, don't sell it short.
  24. I never bought a lure or bait that didn't catch fish.......................everything works some of the time and nothing works all of the time.
  25. Foul hooking is what made the fight harder, I foul hooked a few fish this past week, kings and bonitas. Once I got them in they weren't all that big, just felt like it. Nice carp
