  1. If I were short a few bucks for the stradic fi, I'd pawn my vintage Wille Hoppe billiards cue, or buy a supreme. The xt and symetre do not have sealed drags and that's a turnoff for me. Don't ask me what it means I just want it.
  2. Even ones that used shimanos
  3. I prefer a 6'6 med rod for bass, I don't care for a short butt on any rod. I never have never tried a 7' ul or med light but that might be fun. I don't see it for steady diet.
  4. 401 k's did do wonders, for millions of people that had jobs in companies where their employer made that investment program available, not just wealthy people, but people from all walks of life. I had an Italian buddy of mine back in Detroit, Roger Matrondola and he worked for the Detroit News, wow what a pension plan he had and his dad was a cook in a pizzeria, he came from a very humble background and ended up quite well. I agree with you about a sense of family. My dad worked like a dog 2 jobs at a time, his nickname was one shirt Harry as he only owned 1 shirt, finally he was able start his own business, then forced to retire at age 60 when his health got very bad, he departed earlier than he should have. He owned a fish market and I was cleaning fish along side him at about the time you were born, knew I didn't want to that for a living, no silver spoon here. Not just Italians have a sense of family and desire to get ahead, I'm sure many forum members have a similar story and I applaud them.
  5. You may be the pillar of health with a wife and family at 63, but it's your own choice to be prepared or not. Just about every " Guru " on radio or tv preaches a similar way to do it and they are right. The theory is easy but the road isn't always smooth and sometimes it's just not possible to invest, but the crux of what they say is to" pay yourself first"(dollar cast averaging). In other words stick to your investment game plan before you purchase things of lesser importance. The Gurus may differ in investment vehicles but one has to find what they are comfortable with and to understand it. Nothing better than the 401 k especially if your employer is still matching 1 for 1. Where I come from, and my ethnic background is irrelevant, we are taught from the cradle to take care of ourselves, but I'm always there for my sister and her family. My wife will never have to worry and if I die before my mother I've made sure she will be comfortable if needed.
  6. I would not buy used in the first place unless it was a vintage item no longer made and it was for collection and not use.
  7. Cost but a few bucks to have it fixed by a professional, however superglue will work. The wrapping is good idea, and 20lb braid my fit the bill A sidebar.......I magged an Avet with rare earth mags, used super glue. I wanted to remove them. I soaked it in water for several days and the bond was still rock solid.
  8. Bassn, your insurance company is picking up the difference of the 600, but you are correct. There are certain medications that may cost couple of hundred a month here, but in other countries the total charge could be 5 bucks. Hard to say if I spent less or more before retirement. My Florida expenses are much higher than back in Michigan and I did little recreation in the cold months, but I did have a lifestyle . My last 10 years or so I was a broker working from home and my work day ended 9-10 in the morning and I only worked a few days a week, so I was playing golf nearly every day 18 and many times 36 holes. Down here I just replace xraps that on lose on the rocks everyday. To set the record straight, my business may sound great but I neglected to mention the trials and tribualtions of the years where I made next to nothing. That is something that everyone goes thru regardless of career.
  9. I have never had a job, always my own business or an independent contractor, paid my own healthcare since I entered the workforce, call it 40 years for argument sake. As it mentioned medicare is not a free ride, it's deducted from your social security and a supplemental plan is more than a good idea. As far as I'm concerned we are getting 2nd rate coverage at twice the price. The guy that said about retirement dropping dead with a cardboard box, even that is gonna cost you or someone 10k at today's prices.
  10. There is a newer model and I'm not sure what the difference but I bought mine about 3 years ago. It was fine for about 2 years, smooth with a decent drag, then it became gummed up (reel had never been dunked or even got salt spray on it), had it serviced and it was fine. Then one day just like that it was totally jammed..........at that point I just threw it into the garbage, saw no sense in chasing after a 50 or $60 reel.......I just looked at Penns web site, the new capitva is lighter than the one I had so who knows. The ssg and ssm are real workhorses.
  11. If someone were looking to spend$20,000 on a car I wouldn't send them to a Bently showroom. I probably see more shimano baitrunners and Penns(not a captiva) than anything.
  12. Great fish Mrlite, No 65lb braid on a 20lb class rod, with a b/c capable of reeling in a spinner shark, hmmmmmmm. That's what I call real fishing!
  13. It will be very costly. I closed my business in 97 and with it I closed my group blue cross plan and was forced into a personal non group plan, the coverage is nowhere as good as group and scripts for example are not covered, along with higher co pays and limits on coverage. An employee under a group plan would never be aware of the differences in coverage. The bad part is the insurance companies are holding us hostage, I cannot legally move as Florida b/c is a separate from Michigan they may not write new policies due to your prior medical history. Just about everyone over 55 or 60 will have a pre existing condition. Once I turn 65, next year I qualify for Medicare, but it isn't free, it's deducted from your social security and you will need a supplemental plan as well, but at least the law says they have to write you. For those that are fully insured now, it will change , even now coverages are not what they were 10 or 20 years ago. Your employers will get cheaper plans or may have to eliminate your coverage altogether, depending on the size of the company. The insurance companies, AMA and drug companies have 1 object, to make as much money as they can and your health is a remote secondary consideration. If you think differently do some research and discover where we stand as compared to other countries, high infant mortality rate and our life span is shorter than those living elsewhere, just name a couple. Just mentioning healthcare industry as not to get into politics, that's another animal altogether.
  14. We won't get into the economy, except to say things are picking up and the dealerships are taking advantage, I would too. I'm not saying I got the best deal in the world, but as long as my wife was happy it was worthwhile. She likes to run them into the ground for 8-10 years, she washed her car maybe 3 times in 8 years to give ya an idea, so it doesn't pay to go shopping for a new jag convertible for her. I'm the total opposite, I like my cars and I like a new one every 24-36 months, I lease. I leased the new Genesis a few months ago and I have had more prestigious and costly cars but not sure I've had one that is built so well, I really like this car. All in all we are very happy with our auto acquisitions this year.
  15. I'm a primarily a saltwater fisherman and water can get into the reel just from the line(I coat with grease right at the nut on the spindle helps alot). Pflueger medalist has a sealed drag Supreme has a sealed drag but it's MG not recommended for salt water but I've been using one last for the last 9 months in salt with no trouble, just rinse as Raul said. My pick of the day...Shimano spheros, a true saltwater reel with a waterproof drag( so it's advertised). The new model is about 139, but I bought the last year model the FA well under a 100. They have 3-4000 reels. I own 2 of them, not as smooth as the stradic but a stronger drag, I like this reel it has never let me down. http://fish.shimano.com/publish/content/global_fish/en/us/index/products/reels/saltwater_spinning/Spheros.html http://www.rivermarinesupply.com/xcart/catalog/product_11152_Shimano_Spheros_FA_Saltwater_Spinning_Reel_3000_5000_6000_80.html I've seen other sites as well. In fact I ordered an 8000 fa for about a 100 and they sent me the new fb
  16. I'm in south Florida and since rainy season has started the fishing is poor on my lakes and canals, prior to that is was good.
  17. I have all 3 and would say for a small spinner it makes little difference which one you buy, they're all good. I think the stradic is the best, however a bit more in price. Any reel you buy you'll be satisfied.
  18. This isn't me but one of my "homeboys". The tarpon bite has been pretty good, The migrating 100-200# ones are starting to come in, best caught on live bait. We target the juvies with lures and spinning gear.
  19. I probably see more Penn reels in my part of Florida than anything else, extremely popular here, but not so much b/c (except offshore conventional). Not that I have taken a survey but it wouldn't surprise me if I see about 25% of spinning reels Penn.
  20. I don't do much bait fishing live or cut but I see it done daily. Most just use ordinary mono for a leader. Egg weight above swivel, 3 feet or so leader then your hook, or pyramid sinker at bottom of leader then run a second leader off your swivel to your hook, you can do a trolley rig as well. I'd shy away from steel unless you target barracuda. For casting some use a fluoro leader but I have found it makes little difference especially on an outgoing tide.
  21. I'm swimming against the current here, I use nothing but spinning in freshwater and have given my b/c equipment away. Only exception is ocean offshore and I use 2 conventionals, no doubt larger than a bass or redfish outfit but used for trolling or drifting. Depending on the hot bite, offshore spinning gets my first look.
  22. Another Camry, she loves them
  23. My wife and I went car shopping yesterday. After visiting several dealerships we made our decision, it was like buying a timeshare, they just don't let you out of there. From the salesman to the sales manager on to the sales manager's boss was a 4 hour ordeal but glad to say we were pleased with the end result. We drove the new car home with no deposit on a credit card or personal check with only a promise of bringing in a check one day next week to pay for the car in full. Each dealer we visited seemed to be quite busy.
  24. I have saltwater spoons and lures that I haven't used in years (used in saltwater) rusted yes, but usable and still strong.
  25. Million things you could buy, I have a shimano clarus that may fit that bill nicely. $60 lifetime warranty. 801 is nice reel, I have an 802 and 804.
