  1. I did a little live bait fishing the other day. I had 20lb braid and a 40# leader. The problem was main line getting tangled with the leader with undoable knots and everything wound around a sinker. Next time out I will use mono instead of braid and use a trolley rig.
  2. Yeh, I am one of those people. One of those people that when someone goes with me they goes as my guest even, if they offer to pay. For me that's the right thing to do and it makes me feel good helping another. After I settled down I probably would have a good chuckle over it, not worth stressing out.
  3. You were probably going fishing anyway so it wasn't like you were spending anymore for gas, so it wasn't an extra out of pocket expense. Whatever this person's shortcoming was it doesn't sound like that big of deal, just a day you wished would not have happened. As your "deadbeat" fishing partner isn't here to defend himself, The original post may be a bit biased. There are always three sides to any story, yours.......his......& the truth.
  4. Challenge <cof> I see these guys dragging the fish along the top of the water and hoisting in the boat, hardly a challenge. I don't watch often but I don't seem to see really "big " fish.
  5. Too hot and humid down here, bass fished maybe 3 times for only 30 minutes the last few weeks. I go 4-5 in the morning but it's still hot the no seem ums are terrible this year. My bass season is Jan thru March
  6. I no longer have a boat but had one when I lived on a lake back in Michigan. You go fishing or boating with me just bring a smile and I will supply the rest unless cost was discussed beforehand and we had an agreement. Doesn't sound like an arrangement was made beforehand. As Rolo said, you most likely had a thought as to this person's character. If it were me I would be blaming myself for having poor judgement. The only one I ever complain to is my wife and she justs walks out of the room. Everyone has a bad day once in a while, hardly worth talking about, let it go.
  7. I would tie it on to the power pro that's already on the spool and just top it off, 50-100 yds. The PP is your backing why take it off? I add fresh braid all the time to what's left on the spool. The only negative is the older line is a bit faded but does not affect performance. I've never had braid slip and I never use a mono backing, I tape to the spool.
  8. I use a stradic in saltwater and know many others that do as well with no problems over a long period of time, it's a darn good reel. Shimano will tell you all their reels are safe for saltwater use(only saros and above have arb bearings) On the Shimano web site none of the reels say approved for saltwater use except the ones listed under the off shore reels category. I find a contradiction between what is said and what is printed, but as I mentioned never had a problem and doubt that I will.
  9. A nice gift for my wife.
  10. You're being modest Chris. I have a ton of experience catching big fish and I don't think I could l land one like that on ul, even if I was as young as you........lol
  11. I have only had problems with cheap reels or reels not designed for saltwater use (a must, reel with a sealed front drag ) After each outing I use Salt X, comes in a concentrate, spray it on your reel and line to get rid of salt residue after a fresh water rinse. All I have done to my saltwater reels is to add Corrosion X or Corrosion block to the handle bearings. I also put a dab of grease around the base of spool shaft. IMO one of the better surf reels is a Shimano spheros, I have 2, totally designed for saltwater use, stronger drag than stradic and isn't a sand magnet.......These reels are workhorses.
  12. Have yet to fish that part of the world, will put it on my to do list. Fished charter a couple of times off of Santa Monica.
  13. I see it down at the pier every now and then. For $5 you can a line spool, it's about 6" across. Don't use braid, unless you're wearing gloves.
  14. Most 5# bass are 3 when you put them on a scale.
  15. What city do I buy a plane ticket for?
  16. I believed ya, anything can happen out here, I just wondered how much line your reel held and how you weighed it.
  17. I c&r mainly because I don't want to be bothered and I don't like to eat bass. In my part of Florida I run into more people fishing for food and survival than for sport. I'm more than happy to give them my catch and I'm talking freshwater. If it's legal it's their business not mine.
  18. Dougie you're my idol , I never got one close to that size. I did hook a nice one once and got spooled in less than 60 seconds, luckly I tape and not tie so no reel damage only 280yds of braid. The inlet is all about tide, tide rules! That was the first cuda strike in over a week for me, it's challenging and you will never catch 30 fish in an outing. This hasn't been the poorest season at the inlet in years, especially with the big pier closed down, but I'm there about every morning between 4 and 5 am.
  19. Yes......I knew someone who was attacked by a muskie. About 40 years ago I knew this guy with a limp and I asked him how he got it. He was water skiing on lake St Clair and when he fell a muskie hit his lower leg. After surgery his one leg was now about 2 inches shorter than the healthy leg, he then had the good leg shortened by surgery to match the other. Just remember his name was Art.
  20. I've fished there before, the above post covers it well. Bucktail jigs work good too and spinnner baits, they make them for redfish. Any freshwater fluke like a bass assasin or zoom will work equally as well. DOA baits are real big in Florida.
  21. 1. disc clean up 2. defrag 3. system restore, a few months back 4. ram never hurts, but if the puter was good once, that isn't the problem 5. reformat if all else fails make sure you have everything backed up first, everything will be erased
  22. Hey not for me, after reading some highly recommended posts I'm learning to fish heavy tackle for light fish, and thanks for the help in that area, someday I may be an expert at fishing for little guys just like you. In the post I did neglect to mention that I thought that line was quite strong, didn't twist bad and had no coil, I just hit post before I was done. I was excited to get back to the Michael Jackson memorial, wouldn't missed it for the world. I don't know. A line record for bonita will probably require lighter wire. You might run into some sportfisherman that can give you some tips on how they catch their bait. You're still confused...This is a freshwater bass forum. If you want to talk salt, find another venue or restrict yourself to "Other Species". We don't fish 8000 series reels and we don't use 20 lb P-Line to fish for crappie or trout. I made no mention of saltwater or bontita on this thread and if I were to use an 8000 reel and 20lb line for bass that would be my option. I don't fish for crappie. My post was about the line and not the fish, I did do a poor job on the post, but I did comply to the rules.
  23. Nice redfish, we don't have many in south florida, mosquito lagoon is a decent place to catch them.

  25. I use pline 20# on an 8000 spinner and 25 conventional. I use it for it's thinnest, I can pack a lot on a spool for some long runs.
