  1. Nothing shabby about a 40# grouper
  2. No one ever implied that recovery is a straight line up, but the lows are higher,I view that as positive, but can it turn south, you bet. I have been retired for the 6 years, although I still do a little business back in Michigan. Going back 6 months ago I could not sell an oz of scrap copper, no market for it. Within the last couple of weeks not only has the commodity price risen, but there is a little more demand and I'm able to move some, same scenario is true for steel. I have seen this happen before and business returns. Scrap metal markets precede the general economy, always been that way. The reason, factory orders are up. Yep, I'm optimistic. I live in Delray for 1 basic reason, grandchildren, minutes away If that weren't the case I'd be living close to the ocean. Sure Delray has middle class and so does Boca Raton. Many areas of Delray are not what you think but that has nothing to do with the topic. Bush or Obama, now we are talking politics, I'll bow out of that one.
  3. I've mentioned that numerous times on this forum, I always do it. Simple cinch knot, singe the ends(some put a dab of super glue as well). holds like a moray eel. For lures, simply loopknot, again no problems.
  4. I am one those people in their 60's, 64 to be exact and have lost over half of what I had as well, drawing money from my portfolio to live on and reducing it that much more every month . The people you are referencing are still working, so things could be way worse for them. My heart goes out to the victims of layoffs with no savings. Yes the indicators are there. Retail sales are up, builders starting to build homes, factory starts are up(very important indicator), commodities like copper up, meaning demand is increasing, not to mention companies like aflac, united healthcare, at&t, kmart, medical institutions, and others are starting to hire and not entry level positions but across the board, employment data is a lagging indicator, not a leading one...........yes I'm optimistic. 2 types of people , those that complain and do nothing while others get on with life and make the best of it. I started my business during the recession of 74 as many others did, ya gotta just grind it out till it happens. No different than fishing, how many casts do you make before you get that trophy?
  5. HAHA.......WTG bassn I gotta say.......I'm a member of another board as well, all Florida people and most do saltwater and bass and peaccocks in the off months. About 90% of them share, then post maps pinpointing the blade of grass they are standing on. I had a fellow Pm me and ask me to join him at his "honey hole " yesterday afternoon. If I'm not there, why would I care if someone else is fishing "my spot"
  6. I've done the fence thing for years and it works or letting your line out behind the boat with no weight on it, but that is for line that has been twisted after use. Coiling occurs when you put fresh new line on a spinner. Nothing does a better job than soaking the line in hot water before spooling. I think it's admirable that many prefer to support the economy by purchasing line winders and conditioners, that stuff is so unnecessary.
  7. 2nd pic, absolutely beautiful looks like the Pacific, and for my money Monterey peninsula is a beautiful as it gets. Too bad Pebble Beach is no longer 40 bucks a round...lol.
  8. Not to make light of the Madoff scandal, the problems starting long ago. I feel for the people and the charities a that have been Madoffed and not all them wealthy people. The blame can be put in many areas, deregulation, mortgage originators and the public either being naive or caught up in the game of home equity withdrawal. The victims are the ones that did everything right. Paid taxes, saved and invested for the future and lived within their means, there is little or no help for the ones that did it right. I have been optimistic thru out these times and I still am. I see things going on now indicating that we have entered "recovery". The indicators I focus on always preclude the general economy by 6 months or so and it's happening. Get ready to ROCK N ROLL !
  9. No place to check "none of the above" Supreme xt, does not perorm as well as the supreme and is more $$ Symetre, Entry level on shimano should be saros, still 25% overpriced Johnny Morris.....who services them?
  10. The correct answer is never, providing you treat your equipment right. A rod will snap when it becomes weakened from abuse so as when your snagged up you are whipping that rod to get your lure loose. Always release the bail or put it in free spool and pull the line(takes all the tension off the tip) , not the rod to get unsnagged. It is possible to break a rod when not using a net for a larger fish, but most likely you won't get the fish out of the water. I have caught 150# fish using hvy rods, 12-25 line rating and the rod may bend into a u, but it does not break. ABUSE breaks rods, not proper handling.
  11. The heavier the line the more it can happen, called coiling. The cure is simple and free. Before spooling soak the new line in a bucket of water and better yet in the sink with med hot water for 7 or 8 minutes. line will go on perfect. This is what saltwater anglers do.
  12. I catch great fish on foot and I pace them off with the length of my shoe or a mark on the rod, tells me close enough what I have.
  13. Reminds me of the python eating the gator in the everglades
  14. Line tapering with more towards the front of the spool will improve casting distance, but don't overspool ,if you use braid you for sure get wind knots.
  15. I pretty much own many of the popular spinning reels. However not that Quantum but I do a cabo, hands down there is nothing better bit heavier and more expensive ( many saltwater guides and mavens in this part of Florida use them) I would never buy a reel that isn't suitable for saltwater too. As far as the supreme goes I have the 30 & 35. I didn't think the typical bass down here deserved the 35 so I switched it saltwater use and replaced that freshwater rod with a cardinal 802. It holds plenty of line and manhandled 10# snook. The 30 is just fine for bass and quite light works beautifully, but I honestly think a president is that much smoother and it that size weight isn't that much and you have a few bucks left over. My new stradic fi is my back up, now collecting dust, in favor of my 3 year old cardinal 804. If I had it to do over again I would not buy the supreme. My choice cardinal or president. My 40 president(medalist, saltwater version is used for cuda, bonita, and kingfish and really test the drag All my reels get extremely hard use in both fresh and salt. Shimano , way over rated and way over priced, never again. That said, Free advice is worth exactly what you pay for it
  16. No question braid does come with it's own set of problems, but well worth the trouble. You get used to it fairly quick. I use 10# for freshwater, has the sensitivity and cast ability of 2# with awesome strength. Hooksets are just a mere wristflick. I only use braid fresh and salt. Mono has it's advantages but I can't think of any except price.
  17. LIke no ever fished there before...............haha, I know that palm tree. Guess I'll have to keep my secret snook spots to myself to keep in step with others.
  18. Exactly ! Enron cooked their books to show profitability, what the auto companies did is this example, these numbers are no where near accurate but just an example of how they make the numbers dance. For example, xyz co, expected to make 10 billion for the quarter but they only made 8, they may report a loss of 2 billion (20%)they made money but not what they projected. or the reverse scenario could apply. The report is accurate with no "fudging", but misleading. Wall street analysts do the same thing when they want a stock to ride or fall. If you're poor you need all the help you can get, if your rich you shouldn't mind, Capitalism only benefits the like of Warren Buffet, not the slob that's working 40+ hours a week to just to put food on the table. Change ? It's coming slated for education 2009 around 60 billion 2010 135 billion 2011 146 billion Healthcare reform, when you lose your insurance, you'll be glad the rich will be paying for your's Reinstalling our standing in the world community. Just a few changes that are happening. On the brighter side, recovery is happening, companies that are now hiring: At&T, Amedisys, Price Waterhouse,United Amer Ins, Kmart, Aflac, Ins,United Healthcare and Sears, just to name a few. These are not entry level jobs, but acroos the board.
  19. Yes the minimum size is 33" and cobia so some say are the very best of all to eat. i don't measure or weigh them, but my guess would about 38-40", I pace them off with the length of my shoe. Actually not big for a cobia, they go over 100#. Pflueger supreme 8035, 15# braid, 7' 8/17 hurricane redbone.
  20. SirSnookalot posted a topic in Fishing Reports
The sea was calm and crystal clear and out of nowhere a manta ray about 6 feet across appeared. For those of you that are unaware cobias swim along with rays because when rays "flap" there wings they stir up crustaceans from the ocean floor, which are what cobia like the best. There were about 7 or 8 cobia swimming along and about 6 of us guys starting heaving lures....2 hookups, 1 loss. My DOA soft jerkbait hit it's mark and the fight was on, up and down the pier. Finally I lowered myself into the shallows rod in hand and waded to the beach and we got it in.
  21. That's what I call a fish. Do the math and it's like catching a 10# bass on 8# line.........yeh right. That grouper has some shoulders.
  22. I use spinners for dinks and up to tarpon, If I target fish over 50# I use a conventional.
  23. In many parts of the country I do believe teachers are way underpaid, I met guy in Florida that thought they were overpaid here and Florida is not a good wage state, did he want his kids to have a poor education. Some states are very good, my sister just retired in Michigan making close to 90k. College is important, sure you can make as much if not more with out it but that's a narrow minded viewpoint. We need educated people to develop green tech, alternate fuels, electrical grids, medical technology and pharmaceuticals just to name a few. We are behind the curve of many other nations now. What Sweden and other Euro countries are doing with alt fuels like hydro is amazing.
  24. No one knows the exact amount as much depends on averaging in senior workers and the lesser hourly figures of newer employees. Any accountant can't make figures dance and sing, I had a bud that was a GM accountant and that's what he told me. Line workers do not make any where near 150K, they make like 80k plus outstanding benefits. The problem isn't the cars, it's the legacy costs that goes into each car, they just plain make less on a car..............it's that simple. I know many Americans are against socialized medicine, basically biased information that the AMA and insurance co put out, but if you lost your job and health care you'd love to have it. Many foreign car manufacturers are subsidized by their government for health care, until we do that we can never compete. We pay for congress to have healthcare, let them pay for us.
  25. I use a basic cinch knot for saltwater braid to mono, performs as well as anything else I have tried and it's real easy. Inshore : 15 braid, 30 mono 20 " 40 " Offshore: 30 braid 60 mono
