Most Memorable Fights (with a fish)
Most memorable outing in recent times. Fishing for Kingfish in 185' off the Woolbright tower in Boynton Beach Fl I hooked into a Lemon shark on a 6000 series spinning and 25 lb rod 20# braid. The seas were rolling 2-4 so footing and balance was difficult, 1 hour 20 minutes later as I was unhooking this 6 footer one of my buddies on the boat hooked into another Lemon. He handed me his spinning outfit as he is 78 and not capable of handling a fish that size, I'm only 63.........that's why they take me along, lol. An hour or so later I was unhooking the second 150# fish of the day. Happy to say the sharks left the area and now the Kings and Bonita move in. I caught 4 Kings and 3 or 4 Bonita using a diamond jig. One of the other fellows caught a legal Cobia( best eating fish out there). A very memorable outing.

P line Floro Clear?
I've been using P-Line Floroclear 20# test for kingfish and dolphin on an Avet mxj. No problems as yet. After 6 months of service I'm ready to respool undecided if I'm staying with it or not. Always open to try something else. I do like the fact that I can spool 300 yds plus.

Replacing/upgrading gear is about behavior, not deals
I tend to agree with the original post. Problem as I see it is falling prey to media hype and instant gratification. Unless you are making a living at this, then ya gotta ask yourself "How Much Do I Need and How Much Do I Have to Spend to Enjoy Myself?" IMO the boat makers and the tackle companies are doing a masterful job of marketing, they are reeling many people in just like fish. They aren't fishing, they're catching.

Fishing with Flukes
Hate them for freshwater, love them for saltwater.

worden's vibric rooster tail
Could not agree more. Within minutes of my post yesterday I went into the pond in my yard, I had to , lol. 30 minutes later on the rooster tail I had landed 4 bass. The switched to a jerk bait and nothing, switched to a spinnerbait and caught 2 more. Now I'm curious, I'm going to try 1/4 oz for snook and I bet it works.

Penn 950ssm reel from factory
This thread is getting bit long winded so in the future shoot me a pm and I will be more than happy to respond. I would rent a boat down there, you may want to start with Bud N Mary's, they have a handle on everything down there, not to mention the savings in in fuel. I think the rod will be fine with 950, a bit large and heavy for my style of fishing, but will be fine. 1/4 oz min off a bridge, you need to get that bait down a bit and there will be current, buy some inexpensive 1/2 oz heads to experiment. I prefer fishing sea walls to bridges as I don't carry a net and I like to walk and cast, my go to bait is a DOA cal jerk bait (pearl)and a DOA 1/4 oz jig head. Reel it moderate speed with slight twitches. I have never tried gulp shrimp, do you tail or head rig them?

Function and aesthetics on a spinning reel?
I own supreme 8030, 8035 cardinal 802 stradic fi 2500 stradic fi 4000 It boils down to how much you want to spend supreme a good value and works well 8030 med lt rod cardinal 802 moved to med rod, handles anything freshwater I moved 8035 to light saltwater, it manhandles 10# snook switched the abu and supreme only for line capacity stradic's has been sitting collecting dust, but they are fine reels when I grab a rod my eyes just seem to go the supremes lately Pflueger and Abu are serviced by Pure Fishing, best customer service I have found, that's why they get the nod from me.

help with knots
Especially with braid, singe the end of the line, it definitely reduces the chance of a pull thru. I carry a bic, no need for a scissors for braid

I don't know the waters in your area, I'm sure your bait and tackle store will have the info. On the Atlantic around Boynton Beach we generally drift 185' back into about 120', there are times when the kings are in 60' of water. The depth is not how deep the fish are in the water column, it's the distance from the shore. I'm sure your motor is small enough where fuel should not be a problem, especially drifting because it's shut off. Your in a small boat that isn't the most stable so always keep an eye to the sky in case of weather change.

Return of Tiger Woods
It's match play, win or you're gone. Tiger is playing Brenden Jones from Australia. He would not be 64 in the world if he played the pga tour or european tour. That said Tiger has lost to Australians in match play before. I'm sure his game is ready the question is "ring rust" (being away from competition). If he did not think he could win, he wouldn't be playing. I pick him to get to at least the quarter finals.

worden's vibric rooster tail
When all else fails, it's roostertail time. This spinner never lets me down and as small as they are they catch 5 lb bass. Works great in reeds or right on top of weeds close to shore, doesn't hang up much. The bad rap is they don't last long and the 1/4 oz never seems to work as good as the lighter ones. I buy a copy at Sports Authority with a siwash hook instead of a treble, seems to last longer and it's a buck cheaper.

Labeling rod/reels with what line you have on them ...
I use 13 different set ups + interchange 2 spools , I just know what's on each one of them and what presentation to use on each one. I thought dementia was just for us old folks.

I assume that your reel handle was fine. Grouper is more of a reef fish and I am not familiar trolling for them. Kings are a open water fish, I fish for them all the time. If drifting with bait(frozen sardine) a king rig is best. King rig is simply a hook with 2 or 3 trailer hooks attached, any tackle shop sells them made up already. If trolling for king, a diamond jig is what the commercial fisherman use or a butterfly jig...you can employ both of this jigs drifting in lieu of trolling.

I don't know your area but I do know there are a lot of big tarpon and they can be caught quite near the shore, they are not a deep water fish. From the sound of your rig and line selection it appears as you will be using it for bait and not casting. If you cast with that outfit I wouldn't go 30#. I would use something like P-line 20#, good knot strength and a strong line, I have many 50+ pounders on that line. That reel will hold a ton of line, you'll need it for tarpon. Most important........don't set that drag too tight let them run.

A brief history of math
If I'm not mistaken one of the reasons they are out of buisness is cooking the books. Your Burger King episode clearly defines why the United States educational system is dismal.

Mexican Honeymoon Recommendations
I've been to Mexico many times and have time share in Cabo. I would not pick Cabo, even though the fishing is really great, but very expensive. Without a doubt for a honeymoon I would pick Puerto Vallarta over any Mexican destination. It is the most romantic place I've been in Mexico with wonderful food. The fishing isn't too bad there either and much more affordable than Cabo. I have caught Marlin (striped & white), sailfish, snappers big aj's, dorados not to mention big jacks off the beach. Don't quote me on this but I believe roosterfish are only caught in the Pacific. For a pure fishing trip there are other destinations I would prefer.

Return of Tiger Woods
I am a golfer (played competively in high school and college) and I'm real excited. I do think he is the most dominate golfer of all time and will go down as the greatest. He brings an excitement to the tour that even Nicklaus didn't do, even non golfers watch and root for him. Wonder if he fishes, he has the fantastic home on Hobe Sound and the spanish macks and blues have been hitting there.....lol.

How to find out the moon phase

Nice snook!! May I give you a tip? I'm sure you have loaded up 20# or heavier only to see it " coil off " the spool. This is common. I always soak my line in med hot tap water for about 5-10 min. This will soften the line and help prevent your line jumping off the spool.(coiling). The 950 is a very hefty reel, it will handle just about anything. I'm excited for you. I'm in Florida as well and I'm an experienced inshore and offshore fisherman, please do not hesitate to ask me a question.

Colored Braid
Only translucent (allowing light to pass thru) lines are invisible, braid isn't, just use a leader.
-
Missing anything not using braid?
I only use braid. 10# freshwater, 15# inshore and 20# offshore. For the way I fish, these lines fit me well. BTW , Fuji does make a no tangle tip, they work beautifully.

Looks like the handle is not properly screwed in, it should straighten out as with any spinning reel. Any bait and tackle shop should be able to show you how to do it correctly, I would do that before contacting Penn. That's a hefty reel, what are you fishing for?

Electric Fence
I would check with your local municipality to see if hot live wire is legal on fence. Wouldn't be quite as funny if a child had accidentally touched it.

Chug Bug
I use the 3 1/8 for bluefish and jacks and snook. They occasionally get bit in half, but they work well.
