As a JD, not attorney yet. I would say develop the product, apply for a patent number. Do research in the patent books about a similar product. Always do research for similar products, because you are not the only one who may have thought of something. Even parts of the product could be infringing on another product. In the end if this is a legitimate product you are trying to produce, hire a patent attorney.

It would be if she were only washing her clothes, But I assume she washes yours, and your families if you have children. So I would say it is a family gift. But if she wanted/ is understanding she would not expect something expensive from you as an actual gift this year since you did shell out 1200 already

Group Buy?, I live pretty close to the Tackle shop in SF which carries them. I can charge like 50 cents for shipping on top of the cost of the Finger Savers <--- LOL I can ask them if they can cut us a deal if we buy a certain amount. Now this would depend on how many people are interested again.
