  1. Sadly, manners and common decency are sorely lacking in the world in general. You're right in being the bigger person but nothing wrong with putting people into check when they mistreat you or others.
  2. People often make comparisons and attribute perceived differences to one factor or another but the comparisons seldom take variables into consideration. With that said, a blank's performance can be maximized by keeping the weight of components down. The least number of the smallest, lightest guides suitable for the application and properly spaced has the most impact here.
  3. You can throw a Jitterbug all night long and catch smallies. I usually have a black Colorado blade spinnerbait and black ribbon tail worm tied on as well.
  4. When I fish for 'Stream' smallies I usually expect numbers but smaller fish. I often use a ML or Lite rod and small baits like a 3" senko, Tiny Torpedo or Wollybooger nymph.
  5. Exactly. If you spooled 3 reels with same line and mounted them one at a time the exact same rod and threw the same bait, the differences could be attributed to the reels but they would likely be less than comparing whole setups.
  6. Distance is a far second to improved accuracy gained by improving free-spool whether it be accomplished with bearings, maintenance or tuning. A bait can only be thrown so far based its weight, profile and rods power regardless of how fast or long the spool spins.
  7. For added line capacity, yes. For casting heavy line 4000 or other wide arbor reel.
  8. There are so many other variables like rod, bait profile, reel condition, wind... I wouldn't put 100% stock in someone else's preferred settings. Lews doesn't post their schematics so I can't tell for certain if the mags are different, but I don't think so.
  9. You are right, your friend is wrong and for the reason you stated.
  10. x2. Properly adjusting a baitcaster aids in accuracy but rod length and power are the real keys.
  11. A 2500 size spooled with braid will have the most versatility IMO. If you'll be needing mono or fluoro over 10# you might want to go up to a 4000.
  12. For sheer casting distance spinning tackle is the way to go. If you insist on casting tackle it will come down to being sure the rod is a match for the weight being thrown and learning to thumb the spool to the best of your ability. A reel with a heavier spool and large line capacity will cast further due to the inertia stored in the weight.
  13. In my mind, for such a test to mean anything at all the various guide materials should be tested with a variety of lines. Modern braid and guide materials have pretty much rendered grooving a non-issue. The exceptions would be the climatic circumstances already mentioned.
  14. The urgency for obtaining upgraded tackle depends more on what you have than on how long a go it was manufactured. There are tons of ABU Ambassadeurs still in service since the 60's & 70's for example. I serviced some Shimano Bantams from the 80's a while ago for a guy that still fishes them. Bottom line is, fish what you have and if/when you feel the performance is lacking look into something more modern whether that's this year, next or years from now.
  15. Fusion is the same thing as the Mudhole plastics paint. You need something like this or automotive fender paint that has some give once dried. I don't like adding weight with finish and certainly not a brushed on paint, but if you decide to go through with painting, prep is crucial.
  16. Sounds cool, but $270 for 2hrs?...ouch!
  17. X2. I've had a few Smokes come through the shop after loosing their initial smoothness and there's not much to be done about it that will last. .
  18. Keeping equipment clean is one of the best and easiest maintenance steps you can take. Soft brush/cloth and mild detergent. Air dry thoroughly prior to storage.
  19. Med power is sufficient. If you're crashing cover I like a little faster (as in mod/fast) for the shallow cranks.
  20. I like this shop too. It's upscale for an independent, plus Nancy's an eyeful!
  21. Being so new to casting reels I'd suggest rinsing with clear running water and maybe a soft bristle brush on visible debris. Put a drop of light oil on the worm gear that drives the line guide. I doubt the bearings need lubing already. Honestly, we're talking about a fairly inexpensive reel that probably won't stay smooth for long. There may not be anything wrong but it's hard to say without seeing it.
  22. Contact the mfgr. for peace of mind but from what I can see that's just streaks in the resin. Scratches would be straighter and you could feel them. The lack of finish keeps a rod lighter and crisper, nothing to worry about on that front.
  23. Spin-cast reels come in a range of prices and qualities same as other reels. The better ones will handle some bass fishing applications. They are fussy about line similar to a spinning reel so just keep an eye on that.
  24. You can "Flip" or "Pitch" with any rod technically. The things to consider when choosing are bait weight, size of fish expected and cover conditions. The next thing you run into is the subjective designations put on rods. For example, if you are fishing a MH St. Croix, you may be fishing the equiv. of someone else's Hvy. already.
