Backlash
To get the best results from this technique, don't pull the line too tight initially, and really mash down on the spool as you reel.

Looking for Custom Rod Builders?
I completely agree on the importance of communication. We spend almost as much time consulting on a build as we do on the hands-on process. We also have a 100% satisfaction guarantee and full refund return policy. pgersumky, what blank do you like for the swimbait rods?

I dont know how to use this rod!
To check the action: flex the tip and make note of where the rod bends. Last 1/3-1/4 = Fast 1/2 = Mod MH/F is the most versatile for bass fishing

Re: need new rod and reel for punching heavy mats ?
2 oz is at the top of the range for most manufacturers Heavy rating. H/F should work for you. As suggested, since this is a specialized outfit, save and get the highest quality your budget will allow.

loomis and st.croix
The question isn't really Loomis vs St Croix but model vs. model. St Croix's Legend Elite series is SC V graphite vs. SC III in the Avid line. The SC V St Croix rods go for about the same $ as the GLoomis imx.

mhx rod blanks
I've built several on these blanks with great results. I have two for my own use. One is a H/F spiral worm rod. The other is a M/F spinning rod w/mircro guides.

upgrade bearings
It is normal for oil to slightly and temporarily slow a bearing, especially one with tight tolerances.

What do you use spinning gear for?
I use spinning gear for weightless plastics, lures <1/4 oz and skipping under docks & overhangs

Abu Silver Max reel
I must caution you about tearing into a reel without a schematic, especially if you're not all that familiar with it. Is it just the palm side giving you problems?

Spiral guides on rods..
A spiral wrap can increase casting distance and accuracy by reducing or eliminating line slap taking full advantage of the blanks characteristics as Dan said. Combining a Spiral Wrap and micro guides makes a sweet setup.

Ambassadeur 5000 upgrade
What ratio are you trying to acheive?

Magnetic Brakes, Centrifugal Brakes or Both
Dual braking gives you more options for finr adjustments. I prefer centrifugal over magnetic because getting overzealous at the beginning of a cast is when I tend to get major league backlash.
