Motor Issues, Need Help
Be sure that's the only latch. My motor cowling has 3 latches. (one in front and one on each side at rear corners) The only motor I've had with a single latch was a little 9.9 hp.

Doctor Update
From the sounds of your condition, I don't think I'd be worrying about a little last minute fishing this season... Best of luck!!

Great Blue Herons
You might check the laws before trying that... Avid fishes private water. It may not be legal to feed undersized gamefish as bird food, at least on public waters.

Brady vs Manning
That's a tough call. I like both of them. I do think Brady has had better teams around him and that Manning has made a slightly bigger difference to his respective team so I would have to lean towards Manning if it were my team. But it's hard to argue with the rings.... even if you have had a defense!

Live and Learn
That's why you shouldn't practice casting in the yard!! You could hook a chair and upset your reel!! Just out of curiosity, what reel was it?

I stand corrected... you didn't actually say anyone was wrong. I read your post as implying we were wrong. No harm, either way, but I apoligize for putting words into your mouth.

Shimano Sahara Spinng Reels
Seriously???? Maybe your reels needs servicing... the shimano catalog list that reel as having the following drag settings: The 2500 has 11lbs which is more than most BC reels and the 4000 has 17 lbs.!! Setting the drag part II
If you have enough room for #12 line to get through that space, your reel may not be assembled properly and that may also explain the drag issues you're having. That reel is worth way more than the cost of a servicing... and then you'll have a great second reel or back up to the new one you are about to buy! If you still don't want it, send it to ReelMech and I'll pay the service costs and give it to one of the junior members who needs a reel. If interested, PM me.

Great Blue Herons
Ive seen litterally thousands of Herons in my life (grew up on the water) but rarely ever saw one eat anything over 4-5 inches. I believe they mostly eat minnows and small forage fish. loons, commerants, sea turkeys (whatever your name of choice) on the other hand are a dreadful creatures, sent straight from hell to destroy your waters...

Can We Call A Dolphin, A Dolphin?

Setting the drag part II
Send it for service, something is definitely not right.

Scorpion 1000 Mg vs. Chronarch 50 Mg
I think the handle is also shorter on the scorpion... and parts take longer to get if you need them.

For the most part, I agree. And like most threads, it's no more than an interesting disussion for those of us who are crazy about fishing rods and how they work. Take note that 1/2 of the posters on this thread are rod builders and are a little more passionate than some others. And my guess is, Reel Mech, who I agree may be THE most knowledgeable about the subject has had to eat or resell a cutom rod at a loss because a customer insisted that "it's not a Med., it's way too stiff" or something like that. It was a custom rod builder that came up with the "common cents system" to help solve this kind of problem. No one intended to offend or upset anyone with this exchange of information. At the time, it seemed more productive than watching "Oprah". It's an interesting disscussion, nothing more. BTW I bet at least one Ferrari owner somewhere, has called his dealer and complained because the boat trailer scrapes the pavement when he hits a dip in the road. Ronnie You put it way better than I did. Thanks! Dude, please tell me you didn't miss Oprah today because you were measuring CCS date for this thread!!!! :'( :'( Yes, just kidding! ...lol

Avid, your post is simply not the case. The thread opened with the following line: It was answered by people who have and have used the rods in question and Reelmech (who in the past has supported the exact statements made by others) posted that he thought we were all wrong about something because the original poster used "action" instead of "power" in his question. The fact of the matter is that an ultra-lite could whip 1-3 lb. fish under the right circumstances... but that was NOT the question posed. And just for the record there is probablly not another member with as much respect for ReelMech's rod knowledge as me... He helped me out a bunch when I was learning the basics of rod building. I actually have a good understanding of blank design/materials/ratings/etc. and know what his conclusions are drawn from... but on this one (which has been rare) thread he and I are not seeing the facts (or questions) eye to eye and I think he just read my statements wrong. The CCS data backs up what all but one have said. There isn't much else to say. No one said either company was wrong... we all said they rate it differently. Which IS the case.

got it... the new outfit.. WOW!!!
True, BUT good equipment can (and usually will) really make an angler better. Lighter and more sensitive rods will only improve what you as an angler bring to the table. A light reel adds to that, but to a lesser degree. Enjoy the new combo, it's a sweet one!!

Ronnie, For the purposes of this discussion, the cent count alone should tell us what we are looking for. However, this link has the chart up to 173 cents / 16.0 ERN. (2nd page, right hand side) http://www.common-cents.info/part3.pdf Thanks for taking the time to measure them!

Exactly my point... one rated Med and the other Med-Hvy and they are about the same.

mono line for new combo....
Sounds like a sweet combo!! Line (for me) depends on the cover you will be fishing... if real rocky or woody, I'd go with XT or Yo Zuri Hybrid but if you have just weeds or sparse cover, try the spiderwire xxx in the green box... but go one size heavier as it's under rated. Go by the diameter... the 17# xxx is the diameter of 12# XT. It's good line w/ low memory but it's not as tough around heavy cover. Lots of people here like XL or Big Game for a general purpose line. My partner uses Suffix in the red box and swear by it... I've only used it on spinning gear but am impressed with it there. Bottom line (no pun intended) is that you'll probably try a few different lines before deciding on one. So I'd go ahead and buy a spool of 2 or 3 kinds and use each for a few trips.

what brand fly fishing line is reliable
In the heavier fly lines you get what you pay for.... the coatings are super slick and cast SO MUCH better! I will admit that I use cheaper lines on my 4 wt because I don't need much distance in casting. The Orvis Wonderline is a great line... super slick and shoots great. Truthfully, most of the $50+ lines are real slick and cast great. The Orvis warranty is good to have. Even if YOU screw up and damage the line, they will exchange it. I'm one my 5th yr on my 9 wt line and it's still in great shape and casting well. (It's the older Orvis Wonderline) My 7 wt has wonderline on one spool and the rio ghost tip on the other spool... both a few years old and working like new. If you are just fishing for panfish and stuff then you can get away with the scientific anglers line that they sell at Academy for like $28... I use that on my 4 wt and it's pretty decent. If I needed max casting distance I wouldn't use it though. All things considered, I like the Orvis lines for performance and value, especially when you consider the warranty, unless it's just for panfish or short range stream work.

making the leap finally to baitcasting
Muddy, You just up and jumped off the bridge!! I like a MH for soft plastics, even a Hvy at times and certain lakes. 6'6" or 7' is preference... I always favored 6'6" but now that I fish deep clear water a little extra length helps. I'm still not comfortable with 7' but am up to 6'8" and 6' 10" rods. ...lol Seems like no difference but feels very different when fishing. I'm going to bring a few extra rods to fork because I think there will be some out of towners that don't have hvy rods. I can't help much on the reels, I don't know the ones your looking at. I do want to add one thing on capacity... everyone says it doesn't matter... if you fish braid or light line it doesn't but if you fish hvy mono or fluoro it just might. It is a factor for me since I use a lot of 17# & 20# XT. Many of the low profile reels have a small spool and using hvy mono doesn't mix well.

I have a G-loomis CR722 and a St. Croix PC60MF. Both are 6' and rated Medium Power, Fast Action. Would this be a fair comparison? I also have a G-Loomis CR724 (Heavy Fast) I can do the ccs test on these. Ronnie Ronnie, I believe it's a perfect comp... both are rated med. If you don't mind, could you also ccs the 724 to give us a feel for the spread on the Loomis ratings? Let me know if you need any info or a plan for a ccs jig. Thanks!
