  1. Thanks for sharing, I am real close to my brothers and can only imagine what it would be like to lose one. My story is one of a neighbor, I copied from an old thread...
  2. If you don't mind, that would be great. PM sent w/ email address... you'll save me a trip out in the stormy weather.
  3. Senile1, Got your PM and sent one back. Thanks for the clarification. Keith
  4. I doubt it was a joke but it tickled me, nonetheless! No sir. Never. For too many reasons to list. First and foremost adding weight to the tip doesn't change the rods action, it only loads the tip. You have more potential to ruin a rod than you do to help or solve anything. The only reasons I can see (and I don't agree with them) is using light cranks, the weight would allow you to load the rod with the casting stroke instead of the weight of the lure loading it. It might allow you to get a little casting distance with a light crank but it seems like it would slow the cast down enough to almost negate that very point. The more likely scenario is that the weighted tip would slow the recovery of the rod in a case where the fish was jumping or headshaking and your goal was to lower the number of thrown hooks. Beyond that? Maybe it seemed like a good idea when the beer was flowing? Why would a pro or sponsored angler not just ask for a cranking rod? I might have to swing by the grocery store and read that article.
  5. Great news, Tony! Prayers for continued recovery and good times ahead!
  6. Sadly, you guys missed the point and the spirit of the original post completely. I would encourage you to re-read my original post, especially the last few lines. No where did I "berate" or "disparage the character" of anyone, past, present or returned. Would you mind explaining this comment further? If it's in response to anything I wrote, you severely misinterpreted something.
  7. Congrats!! Awesome fish...
  8. Al, I agree feather are best but a sparse tie of hair won't kill the action any more than feathers... especially the way some lures come- with a wad of feathers.
  9. Lots of flies use deer hair but beyond jigs and dressing some trebles, I don't know of much use for it on lures.
  10. some random thoughts about this... For those that will or want to hit the delete button manually- you may want to give BR the finger or make some sort of statement but you should tell a buddy or two why you are leaving... if you have a legitimate complaint, they can't fix a problem that no one knows exists. If you get sideways with someone, try extending an apology- who knows, it might have just been a big misunderstanding. Either way, you will probably feel better having made the effort... I have, several times. I've also gained respect for those that have PM'd me along those lines. If it's just that your ego got hurt, well then even better to just walk away for a while and cool off, rather than doing something rash. (you don't get the last laugh anyway) There is a decent size group of people that have come back after hitting the delete button... enough that I think most people regret it later. Remember, there was a reason you spent time here and invested enough emotion to get upset and want to leave... like family, it usually blows over with a little time.

I have no idea, but hesitate to assume anything- remember that there were a bunch of people that got ex-membered by a glitch in the software several months ago, ReelMech was one of them and several others. I'm just saying that it's possible.
  12. This is the best response in 5 pages. YOU CAN'T BORROW YOUR WAY OUT OF DEBT Until people take responsibility for themselves and decide to pay off some debt and live on less than they make, there is not a real solution. Companies are also way too far in debt... "Act your wage!" -Dave Ramsey
  13. Sorry muddy, wrong choice of words. Plus, I took your comment of the market crashing as a doom and gloom statement. I don't pay attention to gold prices and I discounted it as a good indicator. Gas prices... well, they have been through the roof, on and off, for a couple years now. With our history, I figured it was better to be overly cautious and bow out of this thread than to risk another misunderstanding. I'll delete the other so i don't cloud up your thread. (you guys will have to edit your quote to remove it though. Your choice. ______________________________ tin, there are thousands, maybe tens of thousands of people working their way through school... no one said it should be easy, the good things in life rarely are. I know a lot of people with big $$$ worth of student loans following them around... think of the freedom (and value) of having hundreds of dollars per month freed up over a 10 year period.
  14. I like Gudebrod. It's cheap, works well and is available locally at Academy. One caution though, check to see if the bottle you are buying is thin... once it sits on the shelf a while, it can thicken and doesn't work nearly as well. The thinner it is the better it penetrates the thread.
  15. I can't answer your question but any 1911 question I ever had was answered at the BR of 1911's ...lol here: http://forums.1911forum.com/
  16. Keep one thing in mind on rod weights... the slower the rod, the lighter the blank if all other things are equal. Take any blank of any make, model and material and weight the fast vs. the mod or mod fast and the slower blank is lighter since the butt section is either smaller (or thinner) to slow the action. (slower taper = slower action = lighter blank) Not suggesting anyone is posting misleading info here, just hoping to clear any misunderstandings before they get started. We have had a lot of people compare the e21 cranking rods to fast & X-fast action graphite rods of other brands and that's apples to oranges from the start.
  17. Catt, Thanks for mentioning the Gorilla Hull in the other thread... I haven't seen it before but really like the sound of it. I think it offers me 2 solutions that will save a lot of money in the long run... buying a "newer" used boat with the layout I want and having it done to reinforce or ease my own fears of buying used. Or secondly, I can keep my current (1994 Champion) boat, re-wire, carpet, etc., knowing that I won't be wasting the money if the hull needs some work later on. I wanted to spend some money in fixing it up but was hesitant since the first 10 years were mostly spent in east TX, and I didn't know what the life of the hull would be after such a rough start. I kept thinking I want a new boat, but since I'm committed to living debt free, a new boat won't happen for a LONG time since I don't have a new boat fund started yet Maybe I'll just give mine fresh carpet, new wiring and a gorilla hull - and not worry for another 10-15 yrs! I need to learn more but I'm excited about the option! Here is a link for anyone else interested: http://www.toledofiberglass.com/GorillaHull.html
  18. KB, I've used the size 29 MAXX batteries for years with good luck. I did have 2 go bad in the past 6 years but both inside the free replacement period. The rest have lasted as well as any other & more expensive batteries I have used.
  19. It's exactly the same, just faster. ...lol Have you ever read G. Fred Asbell's book, Instinctive Shooting II? It will improve your shooting dramatically and your casting skills will also follow suit. I read it again about every summer as a reminder to do things right while practicing for bow season. Good stuff.
  20. Spiral left or right is a preference issue. I go to the same side as the reel handle for everything I build or use. Blanks are a loaded question... like rods, with no price range you get into a world of options. I really like St. Croix, Loomis, CTS and All Star blanks. Most of my personal rods are built on those blanks. Depending on the budget, there might be other blanks to consider, though. The right design and proper execution of the build can trump the blank decision, or can make a good blank, great.
  21. The only thing I see you doing wrong is worrying too much about being accurate. You know, I never worried about accuracy, it just came naturally. It's like shooting a recurve, longbow or throwing a ball or shooting baskets... Focus and repetition. Think about free throws- you don't actually aim, but you focus on the target (basket). I really suck at b-ball but we're talking fishing now. ...lol I never gave any credit to a short rod or where a handle pointed or any of that stuff. It may be because I started baitcasting as a kid and grew up on a lake. I use long rods and 2 hands most often, never think or worry about what direction the reel points or any technical "form" issues... but I think it's just that I've probably made a million + intentional casts. Fishing timber most of those years there were always targets to throw at (or avoid) probably accounted for most of the progress... You know the expression, "aim at nothing and you'll hit it every time" it's true... but aim at something every time and you'll develop accuracy. (I like to say focus on, not aim but it's the same principal) Even when cranking or spinner baiting a barren flat, aim at a floating piece of debris or a particular wave or something. Do it all the time and quit over thinking things, it will come with time. By focusing on the target, you are honing your "instinctive memory" and it's just like shooting arrows. I look at and focus on the spot I want to hit and the arrow "just goes there," same with my lures. The problem in both is that if I consciously worry about where either of them goes, I'm usually off the mark. Sorry or such a choppy reply.
  22. Very well done, Glenn! Thanks for taking the time to put it all together for us. Great info! He sounds like a fun guy to fish with... I liked how excited he got and wanted you to feel the bites... while practicing for a T, he still saw the value in sharing the moment. Classy, Mike, very classy!
  23. Thank God he had on a PFD and had the kill switch attached....
  24. You shouldn't need anything more with this reel. When you actually spool it up and set it up- set the brakes and tension knob, you should have no trouble controlling it. All the new reels have incredible freespooling when brakes and tension are off/loose...
