  1. Windy day - furbit for sure
  2. I agree - I remember when guys my age were hating "Ike" - I didn't act like him but I thought then and now that he was good for the sport because he appealed to younger anglers. When I go to the lake on the weekend and watch the guys fishing our local tournaments I see mostly middle aged (or older) guys in expensive boats with partners their own age. This may be fun but without participation of younger people there is trouble on the horizon for bass fishing.
  3. yep - I too can get ocd over color - it is about confidence - one year I fished only black or white baits or combos of the two shades and caught as many bass as I ever have.
  4. Carbon lite from bps is a real decent rod for a reasonable price.
  5. Fish slow or fish topwater - if persistent you can catch big bass on a frog in 85 degree water at noon. We did it lots of times but we spent hours without a strike, sometimes days. If you want variety head south - Palm Beach and down - it's a zoo of exotics in the canals.
  6. creek chub wiggle fish
  7. Ned is doing his job - he covers pros he fishes with the same way. The devil is always in the details - the best anglers I've known over the years have all been detail oriented. Ned himself fishes with very simple tackle using simple techniques. While in-fish does hype baits it also (in my opinion) gives detailed insight into techniques, some of them out of the mainstream - and not aimed at the tournament bass fisherman.
  8. Good lord that Long fellow is going to spend the rest of his life having to live with what he has done to the sport and to his name. It won't be pretty. Take some young'uns fishing and forget this dude.
  9. I fish a rocky smallmouth river and usually find a 1/32 mushroom head very effective and snags seldom I drift them like I would a streamer when fly fishing.
  10. Bed fishing those clear California lakes is an invitation to bad behavior - to protect those rare giants they should have a closed season - I know that is not a popular opinion but when guys line up waiting for a turn at a giant spawning the sport has left the building.
  11. I saw them spraying gourd neck spring area of lake apopka which the state has spent millions trying to reclaim - without vegetation the money is wasted
  12. dsg is the only chain I go to anymore - but it's a long drive - tw gets most of my business
  13. In the glades we used 100% deet but keep it off of tackle - I used latex glove to spread it - bass hate even a tiny whiff of the stuff
  14. Haven't used the abu but have fished many quantums and some were really great and some were real crappy.
  15. Saw some dd's - clients and friends - myself 8 1/2 lbs Best day, 3 over 7 on consecutive casts on a frog -
  16. Caught a 4# on a frog on christmas day one year.
  17. Sutton can be a good one for decent numbers at times - great chance to catch all three - spots, lgemth and smallies. But haven't been for a couple of weeks, going tomorrow. Will let you know
  18. Check out Ned Kehdes tackle - he catches 1000's of bass each year on old simple rods and reels.
  19. I'm an old fisherman and I learn constantly but like Larry Dahlberg (sp) has said - I first wanted to catch a fish - then I wanted to catch a lot of fish - then I wanted to catch big fish - now I want to catch fish on my terms.--i often fish with stuff for just the hell of it knowing full well I could catch more doing something else.
  20. I have several jars of 11's and 101's? (small ones) but really miss the jumbo - with a little sharp knive work we used them as topwaters and caught really big bass for our area.
  21. While not always necessary I've never found a drawback to being able to make long accurate casts. For me spooks, frogs buzz baits, swim baits all profit from long casts
  22. Both of the ones you have are good - I also like the Manns hardnose as it holds hook very secure - and the case plastics version - on breezy days the Gambler toad or any of those with paddle legs make more of a fuss and are effective.
  23. A while back (50's and 60's) we were using Bronson and Shakespeare free spool tournament reels filled with 9# braided tournament silk - we fished 1/8oz lures with these reels and t3 sila flex rods. But when decent mono came out we went to spinning for the light stuff.
