  1. bone (white) and black only colors needed 90% of time - but it's bass fishing, I have dozens of topwaters in all kinds of neat colors - 200 frogs from pink to chart. and beyond
  2. zoom trick worm - case plastics Big Momma - for flipping zoom super hog - Big Momma shortened
  3. I've fantasized about two speed frog reels - I like to zip them in for another cast but grind the reel on my hookset therefore 6.3:1 is what I use.
  4. Unless you're using a saltwater size spinning reel - 14 is pushing the limit for a spinning reel - if you still want to try it, throw the spool in a bucket of water and wind it on and see if that makes it better. But you're gonna have some issues no matter how you wind it on.
  5. A lot depends on how your boater runs the boat - I've won a few from the back - "strolling" cranks, grubs, jigs behind the boat - not trolling just covering used water with a different approach - shad rap should catch you a few at that lake. Watch your boater and fish where he doesn't.
  6. 99% of the time the line trick is the best way to go -
  7. I've seen bass leap and eat a skimming red-wing black bird twice in my long fishing career - first one in Kansas in the 60's the second one in the everglades in the 90's - I'm not sure you can fish too large of a topwater but I've had days when the little mouse knocked them.
  8. cranks, jerks, jigs - fished deliberately in that order should give you some info on what they're doing - a guide friend of mine gives each an hour - myself about 15 min. - he may be better than me
  9. black furbit in dingy water works for me
  10. Talk to guys that throw them regularly and you'll get different opinions - myself I usually tie to the eye if no split ring but once in a while I'll use a snap and like what I see.
  11. ponchos are great with rain pants
  12. I've always relied on brown and orange 1st, black with or without blue, and some shade of green - there are some very good pro's who will tell you brown is the universal jig color - all that said color comes after location, depth, and presentation.
  13. over 60 degree water, frog - any breeze at all furbit by day furbit by night under 60 - jig worm or senko for missed fish
  14. crazy crawler is still a great smallmouth bait - many river rats throw them and hope muskies don't take them away
  15. standard in florida for many big bass fishermen - any time of day bait -
  16. An old trick is put the spool of line in a bucket of water and crank it on your reel tensioning your line lightly with your fingers.
  17. All I used for years - outside of frog fishing I could live with only trilene xl - but of course I am and will be trying different types and brands of line for the rest of my fishing life.
  18. I have one - haven't tried it yet - I wouldn't have given it a second look but Larry Dahlberg is a fishing guru and one of the greatest innovators in fishing lures we have at present.
  19. Don't be afraid to follow your strengths - jigs are versatile - you can cast, flip, swim. burn - add the bladed jigs and you've a good reaction bait. Back when I fished tournaments in the mid latitudes I won several going down the bank behind the crankers - straining the water with a jig. As the man said - to win a tournament you only need 5 bites - jigs and big topwaters are big bass baits.
  20. Anyone use the sufix crank bait line? I think it is mono but haven't used it or know anyone who has
  21. Cabelas has a flouro made by seagaur that is on sale online regularly - pretty good line. Never used the bps brand.
  22. There are a number of knots for flouro to braid- I've had good success with the alberto - it goes through the guides well enough.
  23. Dual prop sinking baits have been around for a long time - they went out of favor years ago but the craftsmanship these new ones have should make them good lures for certain situations. As my old mentor told me years ago "If it has a hook, it can catch fish."
