  1. If you go to the curve there's a wide spot there that lets you access big cypress - can't remember the number - always worth a trip into and it can be amazing - guided a good number of anglers into there and they were always happy. Never was broken into but that's always a possibility anywhere.
  2. calm mornings -spooks and other topwaters work but it's hard to beat an original rapala in such a situation - throw the biggest one you have and fish it slow
  3. canal fishing in sofla - windy days - furbit parallel to bank vegetation or in it - experiment with retrieve and hang on - the windier it is the more aggressive jerks on the furbit - white somedays - black somedays if it's not windy there is a lot of good advice already given here.
  4. Does anyone have information or better yet - experience with this lake? I know it was considered almost dead but have heard it may be fishable. thanks
  5. I know this isn't used much anymore but when I started out I had no depth sounder but I was a fan of Buck Perry so I trolled and trolled, using crankbaits I would start around 8 - 10 ft and go deeper until I found fish. You get baits deeper trolling so it takes some fiddling and figuring but it is absolutely a deadly way to learn a lake and to find fish. After a few months of trolling I started fishing tournaments - won the first 3 I fished, offshore with no sonar. Of course I bought a sonar unit as soon as I could afford one.
  6. fairly soft tip with very stout butt - switching to the light and strong daiwa frog rod increased our hookups. We fished frogs 12 months a year for 6 years and found that when a good bass goes for it - it is almost impossible to take it away from it. But with fast retrieves and bass under five lbs you are going to miss some.
  7. Anyone tried these out yet?
  8. Easy to weld them to any length you want - we did it in the 'glades all the time - using 316 glue - but the big fat 7" do catch big fish
  9. There was a great article about fishing for smallmouth in very cold muddy water in the latest Bass Angler magazine - it was in Oregon but bass are bass - they used center pin outfits to float small hair jigs for long distances and slay big small mouth- I can't wait to try it on the new, elk, ohio etc.
  10. I was wondering if it would work as an entry level center pin rod.
  11. Since I moved back to brown bass country I want to try center pinning jigs for the giant smallies that inhabit the New River
  12. Frogs, frogs - hollow body - weed demons - almost any toad, horny, ribbit, etc. - another good choice is a Gambler flappin shad with the tail slit - braided line, hang on.
  13. I'd like to see one in action - never thought realism was important in topwaters but then I have learned through the years that I have a lot to learn.
  14. thank you - it was interesting - think I'd like to try it
  15. 1. Furbit 2. Furbit 3. Sebile soft swimmer
  16. Just read an article on center pinning for big smallmouth - does anyone know more about it? Seems like a complicated, expensive and effective way to fish river smallies - more importantly a reason to buy new tackle.
  17. don't know if things have changed but we always did good on sutton and summersville into december - needed a day with a temperature rise
  18. fished the holeylands saturday - was surprised we caught fish all day - dinks in morning on trick worms - a couple around 4lbs in the afternoon on frogs
  19. I guided for years both up north and in so. fla., for bonefish and then bass. I never expected tips and was somewhat put off by them, it is or should be thought of as a profession - but I learned to appreciate them when they were offered. When I realized my fee was a major expense for some guys I would tell them it wasn't a necessity. Met a lot of great people, the tips or no tips never changed that.
  20. We throw frogs 12 months a year - I'm embarrassed to admit how many I carry in my boat - we throw different frogs in specific situations - windy weather is our best friend for big bass on furbits, and some of the popping frogs - we use snagproofs, scum frogs, TT, Swamp donkeys, Koppers, sumo's, spro king frog and popper, I can't seem to do well with reg. spro that is so popular, we just got some of Ish's phat frogs and will try them tomorrow but a serious cold front is blowing through so that could be a tall order - sticking to the frog is the main thing - it is not unusual to go 3 or 4 hrs. before we get results but then you can bust several in a matter of minutes. My partner has two over 8lbs in the last month by persevering through slow days. and don't overlook fishing them in open water, some are deadly. We also modify a lot of them in some way or other, usually super gluing the nose and around the weight.
  21. Next time I'm down in Miami I'll get an obeah man to kill a chicken for you - you watch you'll start catching them - never quit trying
  22. There has been a good midday bite for the last several weeks it just takes patience to fish the thick stuff - we're fishing pads -- last sunday at the holey lands we had an 8 and 7 for big fish - yesterday 2 over 5, on both trips all caught between noon and 2 on frogs and swimbaits - there was a good article by Steve Waters of the ft. ldl. sunsentinel a week or so ago about how the big bass hunt the pads at midday down here and that has been my experience every where for many years
  23. I've had some good days on the Kanawha - used to fish tourneys there. Very interesting and challenging and a real grab bag of lgmouths, spots, smallies, hybrids, etc. Once had a shopping cart pattern going.
  24. I have a place in wva. lived there for years but thought I needed a non-resident lic. because I've been living in fla. $68 with trout stamp - pretty steep I thought - I'll be a res. next yr.
  25. We were fishing off of the tamiami trail - but we were out yesterday off 27 (the fingers) and had pretty much the same results. In 60 years of bass fishing my records for big bass show most were caught between 9 or 10 AM and 2 PM that's fishing all over the U.S. I think Bassmaster mag. had an article that confirms my experience.
