  1. Well I taught my son how to salmon & trout fish and he in turn taught me how to bass fish. I'm very fortunate to have a son who loves fishing as much as I do or perhaps even more. We learned much from our local club guys.
  2. While braid can be good for certain apps, it can be a pain in the a** also. You can't break it with your teeth for one and nippers don't do a great job on it either. So if you want a clean cut, you need scissors or braid cutters. The line can actually cut itself. It will eventually wear out your guides and if it tangles & knots, you're SOL.
  3. I think I know what I'm getting for Christmas! What a nice kid. :
  4. i'm in mississippi, thats pretty deep south.the lakes arent frozen and they're still not having it. i fished maticulously all weekend with not a bite. i'm going nuts. i cant wait till march but i have to. its like suffocating. bought a bunch of jigs for the winter. what a waste. Maybe next time you need to fish "meticulously."
  5. You might try a Huddle Bug http://www.huddlestondeluxe.com/huddlebug.html. Good looking craw, very realistic. We've caught some nice smallies in the Umpqua river on these thrown upstream and drifted down.
  6. We're from So. Oregon. We fish Shasta and Shastina. Shastina would be a good Kayak lake I think. Nice bass in there.
  7. What's more important to a sponsor, fishing achievements or character of the fisherman? Do you think that pro bass fisherman are role models and if so, who do you think is the best role model?
  8. Well, I'm not so sure a sponsor doesn't care about the personal life of an athlete they sponsor. Case in point, Tiger Woods. It is precisely because of his personal life that he is losing his sponsorship deals. So one's CHARACTER is of utmost importance. What if KVD was caught cheating on his wife or arrested for a DWI, what do you think Strike King might do? Sponsors do care about more than just your fishing performance.
  9. Howdy Kayak Tad. Welcome. Not a kayaker, but like Shasta. Watch out for the wind!
  10. Rogue changed hands a few years ago. New owners are great people and I hope they can compete in the bass arena.
  11. Why do people get so d**n testy about these things. I do agree with Road Warrior. While TT hooks may be fine, perhaps there IS something which may be better at very little cost more. Some guys swear by Gamakatsu and to be honest, I like Owner better. But maybe these new Lazer Trokars are better than all of them. I don't know, I haven't tried them yet, but I will. Here's their ad:www.lazertrokar.com Just because someone's been catching fish for 25 years on a type of hook doesn't mean they have to keep using the same hook for the next 10 years.
  12. I though he spelled his name wrong on purpose...you know, to attract attention. That's one h**l of a long winded resume. Tighten it up. Get rid of some of the pork as they say. I like a bit of personal touch. We're not fishing machines. You should revise the stuff about truck wraps and boat wraps, etc., you might think that stuff is cool, but I don't think you have a clue as to the effectiveness of advertising dollars. That's allright though, at least your thinking about how to move yourself forward. Keep fishing, keep winning. Meet personally with prospective sponsors. Be yourself, don't be wooden or contrived. Everyone probably knows your 17 and your green when it comes to just about everything. Tighten the resume up, do some volunteer work, contribute time to fishing conservation, help youth anglers, volunteer. Sponsorship will come when it is warranted.
  13. Howdy! Ever fish Monticello Lake?
  14. Howdy. Just read this forum & website. Then try everything!
  15. These were brand new reels. The issue was the casting distance. Backlash wasn't a problem. And rods weren't the issue. I've used other reels on the same rods, gotten considerably more distance. It just felt like those reels just couldn't throw out the line. I'm talking about with jerks & cranks. Full throttle casts.
  16. Jacob, is that what you're going to try next week? Dad
  17. The company is up by where we live. The have my son on their Jr. Pro Staff. They actually have a good line of bass rods. One of the great things about this company is that everything is made right here in the good old US of A. They create their own blanks here in Oregon. While they don't have some of the bells and whistles visually, they make a very sensitive rod. I'd like to see them more in the bass market. They used to sponsor Byron Velvick, and they make or made a Velvick model swimbait rod. I don't rep them or anything and it's not my brotherinlaw who owns the company. I just like that they are a local small business in an evergaining imported world.
  18. We checked all the settings. I don't know what the problem was but my Pinnacles cast much better, as does my Quantum PT. The new Curado 201e7 my kid got casts like a dream. And his Pfleuger Supreme casts very well. The Asaro seems more cheaply made.
  19. We are using a number of Rogue rods. Does anyone else use Rogue and what do you think of them? They're at www.roguerods.com
  20. Are you intent on a baitcaster for finesse fishing? We use spinning gear for most of our finesse presentations. I couldn't imagine drop shotting with a baitcaster! And their a a lot of small baits you just can't throw on a baitcaster. It seems to me that the spinning setup is more suitable for finesse techniques in general. We like the smaller 2500 series style reels with 6-8 lb test floro or mono, depending on apps. 6.5-7' rod with stiff but and very sensitive tip. Rogue Rods makes a great dropshot rod for about 225-250. www.roguerods.com
  21. Thats normal. Jigs are a year round producer.Jerkbaits like previously mentioned,Rat-l-Traps can produce. Metabolism slows in the cold water,as does their willingness to chase. Slow everything down. That's pretty much it in a nutshell. Where we are in the Pac NW I haven't had great luck using jerkbaits in mid winter> I catch an occasional fish on lipless. Use mostly worms & jigs, fished stupidly slow. But that's here, water temps in the low 40's. Usually the fish are pretty good size but not many of them.
  22. Hey BassChump, Like your boat. We've got a carbon copy except for our motor which is a 90 Evinrude. We like the trophy, does the job! Your not kidding about the weather. You can get hailed on in May for sure. Not fun and freezing! Makes cranking a real joy.
  23. Hey, how ya doin, NYC. Got to get out of the city to fish, eh? Are there bass in Central Park?
  24. Well, I'll be right there at your first Elite Series weigh-in! You can count on it.
  25. I had both the Asaro and Cetina baitcasters. The Asaro seemed pretty good about 4-5 times out. After that, it just wouldn't cast worth a d**n. Tried relubing it without much change. The Cetina was good for about 2 times out. Anyone know anything about these reels or have experience with them?
