Wacky- often weightless, but if the wind is up, that can make it difficult to get the bait down due to waves and wind bowing your line, etc. In that case, I go with a weighted wacky jig, or I'll put a bull-shot on the line somewhere to pull it down. T-Rig- again, wind often dictates to me whether weight or no weight. T-rig does pull thru vegetation better, but wacky is effective there, as well. Sometimes I change to a T-Rig just to give the fish a different look. If I want to fish deep, gotta have a weight.

Welcome aboard! Is there a reason you wouldn't simply use a leader and put braid as your mainline? Line management would be much better than 10# anything on a spinning reel for bass fishing (IMO). I've put 10# copoly on spinning reels and it can coil off like a spring - even with line & lure conditioner. Another benefit of braid + leader is you can vary the leader to any pound test for many techniques. Just curious...

Welcome aboard, @Julian! To the OP, I have only handled the new CLs in-store, but I do own 4 previous versions (2 black, 2 white) and they are great rods. The rods you mention would be great for frogging. Based on specs it appears the only real changes beside color are Winn grips and new guides.

Great point. In my bag of "mention next time" items. There are two excellent knots I use, the uni-to-uni, and the Alberto (aka Modified Albright). There are excellent tutorials for both, googling will bring them up quickly.

The moderators try to keep track of all that is sold, and will delete sold threads. Meaning what's still there is likely still available. You just have to reply to the thread starter and see what's up. I'm assuming you bought the spinning combo? It has a M (medium) power rod, which is kind of the avg for bass fishing, i.e., it covers a wide swath of techniques. You can use it for wacky rig, ned rig, Texas rig, cranks, spinnerbaits, and so forth. But like @scaleface said, you want to make sure the lure rating is within the rating on the rod. Usually that info is just above the handle.

Welcome aboard, Sam! Having only one setup, especially as a college student tight on cash, is not a big deal, really. Multiple setups can be more of a luxury for the budget conscious. Why don't you tell us what you have now and we may offer ideas on how you can maximize its usage. In the meantime, our Fleamarket often has deals that won't break a college student's bank .

That's interesting. What test fluoro have you been using? I mainly use 6, 8, and 10# test. Lots of timber in my fishing spots. Rarely does it abrade my leaders. Fish teeth tend to do more on that front .

I just use a leader all the time. For me it is less about line visibility (or not) than about saving my braided mainline. I do like the abrasion resistance, as well. If you think of it that way, you won't really worry about visibility. Have you noticed your braid getting sliced on the brush as well?

To each his/her own. I learned to swap hands and never have a problem doing so. Much ado, IMHO. Stick with what works, don't overthink it. I doubt you will see *that* much of a wasted motion.

Depending on where, Wels are illegal to keep and must be released back into the river. Not sure if his was under that rule or not...

I tend to cast like you, thumb to 9. Though I also cast with thumb to 12 sometimes. I can say that 9 gives me far fewer backlashes than 12...maybe it is just my technique.
