I have bought at least 30 reels from ebay, with 25 being used. I have bought around 10k in tackle and rods as well, mostly used stuff. I have never lost a penny from a bad transaction..if you buy a used reel, it arrives with a defect, you simply communicate with the seller and if that doesn't work, you open a dispute. Ebay will get your money back for you 100% of the time. I have opened countless disputes regarding broken or defective stuff, and I have always received my money back. When using ebay to make a big ticket purchase like a nice reel, use a sniper and be patient..you might not get what you want at your price the first time, but eventually you will if you are within reason.
