  1. Finesse c-rig. I guess it's basically a split shot rig. Throw a zoom trick worm and slowly drag it. It should be light enough to sit on top of the grass. I have had super great success doing this.
  2. Ya that banjo minnows really do catch fish and really good sometimes. The guy who mad them also makes frogs that work too. Now the guy has mass produced versions of the frogs for like $9-10 I think. I never used one of those but had the hand crafted ones that run like $30+ and caught a bunch of fish on them. I don't have them any more since my brother lost one and so did I. I just haven't be pressed to buy any more because of there price. If I spend good money on one lure now a days it's for swimbaits not frogs.
  3. I have no idea what size they are really. If you buy a hook that will fit it then it will come with the right size screw lock. I will change the small ones that come on smaller hooks out for bigger ones at times but that is just because the bigger it is the better it holds really. Personally though Gamakatsu has the best screw lock on there hooks and hold so much better then everyone else but because of how its attached it can fall off the hook unless you wrap it around the shank. I buy owner hooks though over any other brand unless I am in a pinch and have to buy something else just because I need hooks.
  4. I don't own any mag brake only reels any more. Well except tatulas but those are a class of there own with that breaking system. I also never use spool tension on any of my reels. Like someone said about there reels you could just remove it and it wouldn't matter to me. It's pretty much pointless to me.
  5. It usually only happens to me when there is a little bit of disturbance on the water. I think mostly is it because it runs over your line on one of the side to side glides. It happens to me a good bit when I throw lunker punkers no matter the surface conditions. That's just part of the game though with those. They just glide so far there is not much you can do about it.
  6. Screw lock hooks are your friend. A hot knife will also fix any piece of plastic and does the job 100x better then mendit.
  7. They had them when I got some stuff out of that box. I think they only had bone and clear. I picked up 1 of each that maybe one day I will use on a light spinning rod or something.
  8. I would try and buy things off the flee market here or on other forums if they have one. You can always wait for stuff to go on sale or clearance also. Depending on where you live it might be possible to go to a actual real flee market and find some cranks and stuff. When I was a kid I went every weekend with my grandfather. For the most part it was like 98% garbage. Lots of people trying to sell like 50 year old casting reels with metal rods and stuff. Or a box full of dirty hair jigs and rusty Erie dearies that no one wants. But that is just my experience and locations plays a factor I am sure. My grandfather on the other hand used to clean up on hand tools. If you are ever looking that's the place to find the best tools and cheap. Tons of snapon and bluepoint ect for a couple bucks or less.
  9. You can get a s waver or giron for under 20 and they are both solid baits. Not to discredit Matt but both of those are good baits under $20 although technically they are "glide baits" but they are still listed under the swim bait section. I would personally go with a s waver.
  10. I have had bad when I use to do framing when I was younger. That plus being on a computer tore me up. Sometimes I couldn't even turn a door knob it would d**n near drop me to my knees in pain. If you are tone and can see your veins and stuff I could looks at my wrist and bend my fingers and you can see like a bulge in your tendons.
  11. I use any where from 6'6" to 7'8". Mostl though I use rods that's are actually over 7'. Like if I have to bring 2 I bring 7'6" GLX for bottom contact and and a 7'1" or maybe it's 7'2" crucial for reaction.
  12. The PQ has centrifigual brakes where the Lews speed spool does not. That alone is a HUGE advantage for a beginner. Just mag brakes and spool tensions sucks especially if you don't really know what your are doing. Your casting distance will be terrible and you will probably get a ton is backlashes. It might make you frustrated and want to quit.
  13. Like everyone has said before. Your not really trying to figure out what a bite feels like. Everyone should know what a fish feels like. You want to know what your bait feels like. You need to know what's on the bottom and where you are throwing to and how it should all feel. Any unexpected difference or something that doesn't feel like it should is a fish. Lots of time no matter how great your rod is or what line you are using you never feel it.
  14. I catch a decent amoun of large mouth across from the islands around marble head. I would like be able to tell you exact spots but its so vast I wouldn't know where to begin. There is just places along the Ohio side with pads and vegetation that I look for and boat docks or flats.
  15. I have never owned one have fished one other people have had a tiny bit. A Abu Garcia black max is a ok reel to start off I suppose. I wouldn't say it's like a PQ because a PQ I would still use but I would keep fishing because its a pretty solid reel.
  16. It is the difference in the weight of the line. I can almost guarantee it. It's changes how your spool starts up and all that. I think braid is actually heavier I might be wrong I am not positive. That is why maybe taking a touch off your spool might help. I have also noticed when I put on fresh braid as opposed to stuff that's like a year old even if it is the same exact stuff it will want to backlash easier. I think it is because its not worn in and still has all that coating on it.
  17. I can honestly say I have never cut out a spool of line in my life. I have however cut the lure off so I can pull it back through and get it underneath with braided line. I don't use that thumb trick either. I did a little when I first learned but you need to tighten your drag and it probably is not great for you real. I just grab a loop and pull "gently" so if it is not the correct one its not super tight and I can grab it an more and so it doesn't mess up my line. I don't really get backlashes anymore unless like someone said I hit something mid cast like some tall grass or a bush w/e but its super rare. You can generally pick out any backlash in about a minute or two once you have a bit of practice and understand how they work and what to look for.
  18. X2 This is like what I said in my comment. Location is just a given so I don't know why people are even Include it. I look at it from the point of fishing next to someone and one person catching more fish. There can be multiple baits to get them with but the right presentation is key. Also like you had said casting accuracy could almost be considered location but I think that is more technique.
  19. I do pretty well out there for LMB. My aunt has a cottage out that way with a slip in Marble Head. That is a little west of where you will be. You can catch smallish to but I usually go for the LMB when I'm down there. If your having no luck you can always take the ferry or jet express to the bay and party down. There is actually some good fishing off the iands also. I have done pretty well around pele island.
  20. I picked up a bunch of that stuff last weekend. They had boxes full of heddon rebel and coton cordell for $1.50. I actually grab lots of little stuff like baby spooks cranks and poppers. I realized I do not have any tiny lures so I stocked up.
  21. I still don't really get how people cut them selves. Are you wrapping the line around your fingers and trying to pull it tight? Wrap your main line around your hand and not a individual finger. Between your thumb and index. For pulling my tag end I will use my needle nose if needed because it is usually really short and there is no real way to grip it.
  22. To me having the right technique is more important. Of course you have to also have a bait they are looking to bite that is just a given. Although I do believe you can catch fish on any lure it just might not be the best and you need to find ones that are wanting to bite. I can fish side by side with someone both using the same exact and catch more fish. It is just because I have spent more time on the water or am more familiar with using said lure. Also though I will say for sure my casting ability plays a factor. I am not the greatest but I get my lure where it needs to be pretty good.
  23. I feel like generally double taps are little fish. Or at least I think it seems that way. Once they start getting to about 2# it's usually just one hit. Or so it seems to me.
