Hook Set With Plastics???
I like fishing cowgirl's saying, if you don't have a bass at the end of your line you had better have it's lips lol !! The first strike is when I set the hook unless the fish are really timid, sometimes they will bite at the bait to run it off, I usually dip it in a little jj's if that happens to make them hold on long enough for a strong hook set.

Do Big Baits Always Catch Bigger Fish?
Big bass are known for being LAZY, they will take the opportunity to get the most for the least effort, but big baits does not always equal big bass, a 10" worm is just as easily taken by a one pound bass as it would be by a 10lb bass. If you want to catch big bass it's not just the size of the bait that matters, it's the point at which you place the bait and the technique you use to present the bait imo.

Any Va Members Fish Lately?
If the cat's get big I can only imagine how big the musky are !!! But looking at the markings they are more rounded like a cat fish mouth, I would think if a large muskey had a hold of it there would be no tail at all or much more damage to the fish.

Nice job !!! I think there are some pretty big cats in that place, some that could swallow a VW bug, lol, I talked to an underwater welder and has dove SML, they do not go down without a speargun escort he tells me, the first time he dove there he said he came straight back up before he reached his destination for inspection. Wether or not thats the truth, who knows, but as big and deep as that place is and by looking at your fish, it looks to be plauseable.

Favorite C-Rig Bait
2 Baits I use are a 6" zoom lizard, and a 4" zoom salt and pepper fluke. I am looking forward to trying some of the Rage tail products I purchaced though as well.

'69 Evinrude 9.5 Losing A Cylinder
A magneto either works or it dont work in most cases, in some, I have seen them to be very weak, and in those cases the key has sheared and allowed the flywheel to move. I am not saying the plug is fouled, although it may very well be, there could be a crack in the plug and you may not be able to physically see it, but if there is, voltage will take the path of least resistance and travel elsewhere, possibly grounding itself. A coil will do the same thing, look for white areas around the coil, some is normal a lot is a good sign of leakage. A plug wire/boot if routed close to the engine will be able to leak as well, allowing voltage to escape through the insolation and ground to the engine block, if the wire is damaged internally it will cause a backup in voltage and it too could cause a premature coil failure. One other note: it may be a power pack as well, if equipt with one but the only way to know for sure is to take it to a good tech.

'69 Evinrude 9.5 Losing A Cylinder
Most likely a plug, plug wire, or coil, under load the ignition system has to push current, if any one of those 3 have high resistance it will cause it not to spark, look for carbon tracking on the plug insolation, the plug wire, check at the tip of the plug and look at the electrode for wear. I don't know how long it has been since a tune up was performed but it sounds as if it is due for one.

Which Would You Rather?
I voted lake Fork, I have yet to catch a SMB in my 40+ years of fishing and really would like to know what a 5 or 6 lb smallie is like, but I chose Fork instead because I really want a chance to get a double digit LMB...and to fish with Long Mike, that would be a dream come true !!!

Problems With Jig Fishing
It would help to know where you are using them and what style and size, some of the best places are around docks, rocky points, humps on the bottom. Swim jigs are best around cover imo, football head jigs work best around rocks, arkey style jigs are best for me around docks, if you are getting bites I would suggest down sizeing to a 3/8 or even 1/4 oz, find out whats around your area and go up in size from there, braided line is all I ever use with jigs, your rod and reel are good choices. Always be ready to set the hook on the very first strike, if you feel it at all, a lot of the time you will never know the fish have taken the bait with a jig, especially if it makes it to the bottom, the fish will just inhale the bait and not move with it, line watching is key in those cases.

I agree with both of your statements, "nothing lasts forever", old school ways of doing things will soon be a thing of the past, nothing lasts like you think it should anymore, im reminded of an old Merle Haggard song and a phrase from it sticks in my mind "were rolling down hill like a snowball headed for hell", but change is comming wether we want it to or not, I can not say that one brand works better than others, the ones that I purchaced seem to be ok so far. There is only one bulb for each color lense of a traffic light, although the bulb itself has changed over the years and have also since gone to new technology like LED's.

Any Va Members Fish Lately?
X2 !! Justin, First of all, thank you for the pics and the info, thats the way we like to go, Really nice job with everything !!! That is a big fish and a very nice job you did catching it, but to be polite about it, it does not look to be a 10 lb fish, I remember my first big bass of good size, and I am not saying that one is your first big one, but I thought it to be much bigger than it really was, and well, lets just say there are some critics that will make you feel small. Do yourself a favor and get a scale, that way you take out the guess work. Congrats justin !! AWESOME JOB !!!

Teach A Greg To Fish
WOW !!! Where do I buy tickets? Greg, First of all glad to have you in the Forum, although you may not think it, these two are great friends, we do enjoy a good laugh and the occassional bass kicking, hook removing, Bass Resource brawl from time to time. As you read through all of the info that we have here, one thing to keep in mind, keep it simple !!, there is no need in going out and spending your retirement fund to enjoy fishing, 6 basic lures is all you really need to invest in, I do not see where you are located, but as you decide what you are interested in such as top water baits, jigs, worms, cranks etc...feel free to post questions in your area of the country by scrolling down and search for the region you are in, then ask questions about colors and baits that are working for others, they will help you make an informed decision as to what you should try. When making decisions about rods and reels, don't settle for cheap, but don't break the bank either, at least not on your first set-up, get some ideas from everyone and go get a feel for them in the store, find something that will be comfortable, you will be using it a lot. Don't rush things especially if you purchace a baitcaster set up, take your time and you will enjoy fishing with it in no time. Patience will need to be your closest friend for a while so get comfortable and relax and lets get started. Good luck and be safe !!!
