I also hate braid, and it is only on my frog and musky set ups that neither get much use. I also have one punching setup that I only use part of the year, and dont really like doing that either.

I use Seaguar now...but in all the fluro's I have used I have had breakoffs- I love the feel the line gives you but as far as "abraision resitance" I have not really found anything I really am in love with. I like rocks, but rocks do not like fluro-I need a kitchen timer for my next gear purchase because I have a bad habit of "one more cast" before I retie and it always bite me back.

Focus on getting the settings correct for the type of water/depth you are fishing and you will be very happy with that unit. The quick keys are not critical imo and if you can see alright the 5 screen will be good. Since it sounds like you are doing all the reading you need to do to get the settings right- the most important thing is to spend some time on the water using it, which is hard because you will want to start fishing...

Not to get political here- but based on your bassinNY I would assume that you live there. That being said Illinois and NY share a lot of similar bad traits. Namely we here are broke as a State. Anyhow, licensing fees are not being appropriated to where they should be and is going to general funds as opposed to the parks and agencies it is supposed to be going to. In the last 8 years funding has been cut in half here. So we really cannot count on them to help us. Currently they are set up to close many of our State parks here, and the IDNR is going to be grossly reduced. This just means that outdoorsmen need to help each other. Police ourselves a bit(clean up, lead by example, etc), and take care of what we do have. I see private ownership as not a bad thing for our particular region- I would gladly pay for access to some lakes, and I can have more confidence to where the money is going (sometimes). Pleasure boaters will be out in full force this weekend, be safe out there.

The trackers are very nice- and out the door you may be able to get a slighlty used one for around 10k. New and you are looking closer to 19k after taxes, etc. You do want the max horsepower for what your boat is rated- not just to go fast but your engine works less, really good in the long run. Alum boats do not like wind, so just need to be good with the TM, and a drift sock helps. You can also hit somthing with the boat and not have to worry as much as with fiberglass. They are very light, so your tow vechicle will have less stress and load as well. If you do go with a smaller engine you will be able to get into a boat for what you want to spend, but if you are getting a loan you may want to see what it takes to get an extra couple of thousand and how that would change your payment. Just flipped throught the new issue of Bassmasters and noticed the name Todd Driscoll. Is this the same lowrance guru that is on here from time to time. If so, very nice- It is about the only thing i really read in that issue.

There are no doubt there are rods out there that can and will handle these fish- I also dont think i would ever use braid striper fishing- i want a bit of stretch with them. Anyhow, huge fish can be caught on light rods with the right drag and patience- I would just not start out with an expensive rod to start out with. Good rods do break... As always, everyone should buy what they want, and use it how they want though. Biggest fish i have seen caught in person was well over 50# and on a mh 6'6'' lightning rod- so goes to show price is not always the proverbial "breaking point" As for saltwater, sad to say i have never fished it, and need to.

Wow...I have learned several things on this thread- but the thing that sticks out the most is I learned I would never be able to complete a project like that! Looking foward to seeing a finished product.

I would not take a "carbs probably need cleaned" and hope for the best at $450...but I would let a mech. do it if you are unsure. Could be as simple as plugs. Did they hook it up to the hose and look at a variety of simple solutions?

Yes, a cheap stout rod is preferred! One reason, it vary well may break, two, you for sure do not need an ultra sensative rod to feel a bite, most of the time lucky to hang on to the rod! Fishing for these makes me wonder why i fish lmb as often as i do.

That, or BPS brand may be a decent sub. just checked and bps no longer has them either. guess you can have mine, i never used them.

About maxed out with the stainless-really i should not complain-I love the merc, only have had to replace a coil pack so far. Just my issue is with my boat is max rated for the 75hp when it should be rated up to 90 since they weigh the same. Guess i should relax a bit.
