Rods without a hook keeper
No problem... just depends on where you want to put it. For both spinning and baitcasters you can put it on the foot of the first guide. Keep in mind I said the foot, NOT in the guide itself. Also for spinning you can hook it on the bail. On a baitcaster you can put it on the bar just above the level wind if there is enough room, or drill a hole just big enough for the hook size you normally use just above the point of the trigger Mike

Is it likely that this is bass feeding on frogs?
Just throw one in there! You'll find out soon enough. Mike

Your tips and tricks
With all due respect this is one statement I have an issue with. In my opinion there are technique's that do require an angler to have a certain level of skill to catch a bass. Granted catching a bass on a 2 trebled crank or a 3 trebled jerkbait where the fish more times than not will hook themselves does not require much skill. However, imho hooking up with a frog, or punching though 2 ft of hydrilla, or working a craw through submerged grass, or skipping a jig under a dock with a baitcaster does. If no skill level is ever required to catch a fish, then a great number of posts on this site wouldn't be worth reading. Mike

Your tips and tricks
You don't need 500.00 rods and 300.00 reels to catch a fish. You don't need boxes and boxes of different lures of different types or colors to catch a fish. You do need to keep learning regardless of how good you think you are. Always remember, tounament anglers are people too. Mike

Looking for advice
As others have said you don't need "high quality rod combo's". What you do need is the desire and commitment to listen and learn, which seems like you have. Buy what you can with the funds you have and become profient with it. Visit your local waters experimenting with just a few baits keeping different colors to a minimum. You don't need boxes of different baits and lures. Visit a few local tackles shops or marina's if you have any and ask what would be best to use in your local waters. Don't be afraid to walk up to other fisherman you may meet fishing off docks if you have any or others walking the bank of a pond. Tell them you're wanting to learn, you'll be surprised at the advise and help you may get. The best advise I can give you is don't worry about fishing tournaments just yet. Read, ask, listen and learn as much as you can. Take your time.. You're about to start something that will stay with you for the rest of your life. You have to learn what to do before you do it. Best of luck to you kid, and hope to hear from you again. Mike

Quick Question?
I take the plastic off after every outing. The only exception is if the hook has a keeper and I know I'll be throwing that same bait again the next time out. Mike

Learning to fish in FL
Hello and Welcome! You're good with the 3/0. Davecon's suggestions of a 4" Senko is a good one. You can also try a bb cricket t rigged with an small weight, or a ribbon tail worm. Work the cricket on the bottom and slowly reel the the ribbon tail. With those 3 baits you'll have the whole water column covered. Good Luck Mike

That one thing you never thought you needed...
Ditto! I never thought about them either until a boater I was with last year had one on. After seeing how it protected him from not only the sun, but from bugs that were swarming all over us I was sold. Mike

Senko rod
Depending on cover, either a Loomis MBR 843C GLX, 100SF Chronarch spooled with 16# Sniper or Fenwick Techna AV, Curado E7 spooled with 50lb braid. Mike
