I'd try the redbone ML. From my experience with a similar rated 7'ML of 1/4-1/2, the rod throws down 1/16 to 1/8 jigs fine.

There's different types of jerkbaits. Sinking, floating, slow rise, suspend. Then there's rattle and silent.

Since it been sitting that long, go through the entire boat and all of its components. For the motor, pull anything that has fuel go through it and inspect it.

If you go digital, at least put fresh batteries in often, when the charge goes low the weight outputs get funny.

I'd say just fishing isn't what's only involved with having the boat. It also includes a different scenery and a chance to move away from others when you are stuck on the bank, among other things. Boating is a different experience in which I enjoy that comes with fishing and enhances it on certain levels. So no, I wouldn't give up boating because I could.
