  1. search baits, dont believe in the concept of them. you can call it that if you want because its the first thing you tie on or throw, but it doesnt mean its going to find you fish or work better than any other bait you couldve thrown first.
  2. do as rhino suggested and leave everything at home but your old trusty setups. covering water just to cover it doesnt usually accomplish anything, especially if youre not fishing the proper baits in that water. and if youre just out fun fishing, remember that, youre not in a tournament and there is no clock to race against or other anglers. or you can just continue to work the new methods youre trying and perhaps come pretty efficient at cranking or spinnerbaiting or whatever method it may be...
  3. ive never used scents, but am not against those that do. but there is one thing i see that i think is kind of ironic. it goes back to the artificial vs live bait debate. many say live bait is easier and they feel more gratified by catching fish on artificials. well, im sure many of those that say that use scents as well, and my question is for that crowd mainly. but wouldnt using a scent that makes your artificials taste like live bait also cancel out the thought of "feeling more accomplished" when you catch a fish?
  4. we had family fishing trips when i was a kid, but ill never forget all the bass me and my dad caught out of the potomac the one time it was just me and him fishing by ourselves. another time is taking one of my nieces fishing, she loves to fish, i hooked a nice 2lb largemouth bass and gave her the rood and reel and let her fight it all the way in. she still talks about catching another big bass and how she hasnt in such a long time...
  5. if you didnt fish the docks you missed out
  6. more than likely, youre not tying the knot properly. i just dont get all the knot problems people have. i use two knots for all my fishing and they havent failed me. i use the improved clinch more than any knot, next i seldomly on occasion use the palomar knot. neither have failed me. ive never had a lure go flying across the lake on a cast, and while it may cost me one day, i never retie my knots for the sake of it. visible line damage, yes, then i will retie. also, ive never had a fish pull my knot loose while fighting it, never had a break-off at the knot either. even when catfishing all weekend, if i dont get snagged and lose my tackle, then i often will have the same original knot i tied to start with hold all weekend long. if your lures are flying off constantly, then youre probably not tightening your knots enough. as others have stated many times in this thread, wet your knot with some good old spit before tightening it down. it will reduce friction on the line when tightening it, and it will pull tight much smoother than dry line as the spit lubes it.
  7. seems it happens to a lot of threads that arent fishing reports. someone mentions their scenario and ask a question about it pertaining to bass behavior and it gets moved to fishing reports. i never understood that, especially when the thread seems to pertain more to bass and their behavior, as opposed to "hey i caught this on my latest trip" or "i went out today and got skunked, still had a good time though"...
  8. why is this considered a fishing report? certainly doesnt seem like one. seems more like a thread asking about bass and beaver correlation...
  9. try upsizing your tackle. it aint gotta be a light gear tactic. i frequently use 1oz weights for example...
  10. invited a friend to catfish with me and my brother in law saturday night on lake gaston when i was visiting NC. he said yeah at first then backed out that day for whatever reason. two game wardens rode by us(on shore) in their boat 4 times, befor going around a bend into a cove and docking, then trying to sneak up on us by land. they got 10 feet away and clicked on a flashlight and announced themselves. they just wanted to do a license check, our licenses were good. they were pretty stealthy though, never heard them coming...
  11. naw, i havent, wasnt aware there was one. if you can find a youtube link on it, post it up and i will gladly watch...
  12. i totally agree with the original post, being a kid back in the day had to be way better than being a kid now. we had more freedoms it seemed like. we did more things that were fine back then but would get scoffed at now. what happened is something i like to call the P****fication of America...
  13. wow, some of you take this catch and release thing too far, like wanting people killed for it. seriously? joking or not it isnt funny saying take another persons life because they kept a fish they caught. as for calling someone selfish for keeping a few fish, isnt it just as selfish for someone to be mad about others keeping fish? i mean after all, youre only mad they kept a fish "you coulda caught in a few years when its bigger"...think about that...
  14. i had something similar happen one day. was fishing a rebel crickhopper in a pond, and hooked a small bluegill. im like man, i dont wanna get my hands all fishy for that little thing, maybe it will free itself if i let it jerk around a couple minutes, i had yet to catch a fish this day. so while im watching it jerk around near the shore in clear water, a 4lb largemouth shoots out from under a small patch of algae on the shoreline and attacks the hooked bluegill. he went bananas over the bluegill, bit onto it, jumped out of the water into 2 or 3 tail walks, and then started swimming to deeper water, as my line tightened he felt the pressure and circled back towards shore and dove out of the water like superman towards me and the bank, while the fish is in midair i yank on my rod in a hookset fashion, i got to see the bluegill go down the basses throat as my crickhoppers small treble ripped out of the bluegills mouth and hooked into the basses mouth, it was a great tradeoff and was amazing to see, it absolutely blew my mind...
  15. Going in front of a judge can help. I just went to court for a reckless driving ticket that got reduced to improper driving. now the cop recommended it be reduced, but i still had to appear for that to happen. so why did the cop not just write me a ticket for improper driving? because in VA the law prohibits him from doing so, a judge must agree to reduce the charge to improper from reckless. also a couple people had their tickets thrown out altogether. going in front of a judge can help, of course if youre the type to just bend over and take it by not going to court, well thats on you...
  16. i can see logs being more useful to the most serious of fishermen, but i have no use for them myself
  17. oh my, i googled them, those things are ugly as hell, wouldnt be caught dead in them also, im missing the big toe on my left foot due to a lawnmower accident when i was a teenager. it really sucks only being able to count to 19
  18. youre gonna need a whole nother set-up. if i were you i would wait until december and hit up the chesapeake bay, thats when the trophies come in there at 40-50+ inches. i caught a 42 incher on mothers day this year trolling big umbrella rigs with swimbaits, around the time of mothers day is also trophy season. the limit was one striper greater than 28 inches. not sure exactly where youre going though, my trip was out of deale, maryland
  19. there will be a day when that "crap swimbait" will be the only thing the fish bite. for example, i had a rapala husky jerk in my tackle box for two years. never even had a strike on it when i tried using it, but i always kept in my tackle box. one february day i decided to break it out again because i read on here that they were good cold water baits. after an hour of wasting my time with plastics fishing as slow as i could, i pulled out two bass back to back from the same spot on the husky jerk. one being(at the time) my PB of 4lbs even...
  20. why limit yourself? take the spinnerbaits too lol. i mostly fish plastics, but if theyre hitting something else better, then i wont hesitate to put them down for another lure...
  21. i still love my spinning reels after buying a couple baitcasters...
  22. honestly, i disagree with the underline. any reel that comes prespooled with line, i rip that line off right away and put on some line i know i trust, i learned the hardway...and with a zebco 33 at that about 7 or 8 years ago...my bro-in-law told me "i would change that line that came on it" and of course i lost a nice fish when that line snapped on me, its the last time ive had a breakoff from a fish...
  23. in fairness to the OP, Brian Needhams comments were totally uncalled for. especially when there is punctuation breaking up the so-called "run-on" and others seemed to be answering the question just fine. also, it would help if the person complaining about grammar could actually spell grammar. message boards arent for people who think everything has to be typed out perfectly, this isnt english class, and most people frankly dont see the need to type formal in an informal setting...
  24. i fish it t-rigged but weightless. im loving fishing all my plastics weightless for the most part the last couple of years. i love seeing my line take off sideways on that slow fall of weightless plastics
  25. i dislike soccer so much that if/when i have kids it will be one sport that i will refuse to let them play i dont even like that it says Kicker above my avatar lol
