  1. white perch will take over a body of water more so then crappie and lead to the depletion of other fish species. I havent researched it myself, but on Smith Mountain Lake the story goes that there was apparently a healthy thriving white bass population at one time...then came the white perch. now its considered a rarity to catch a white bass there. and if you are live bait fishing they will irritate the crap out of you, its happened to me many night while catfishing. so i just go to a smaller hook and catch the hell out of them. i will toss the bigger ones back, but the smaller ones become cutbait, caught a stripped bass on white perch cutbait back in april. the stripper knocked the cut bait up the line, i re-rigged it and caught a catfish on the same piece of cutbait 15 minutes later lol... actually right now is a great time of year to catch the perch at SML. I was getting into some decent sized yellow perch last October when i was down there along with the white perch. yet i cant get either to bite any of my lures like the tiny ratl traps, toss out a minnow or nightcrawler and they are all over it though
  2. this, it really isnt as simple as typing in the search box and hitting go. there are all kind of options you can use to broaden or narrow down your search. i got pretty acquainted with the search feature looking for a couple old threads one day. someone didnt believe me about the guy here that posted a thread about catching bass on a shoe string...
  3. it dont always work that way, see donovan mcnabb...
  4. im just glad the cowpukes lost
  5. most of my fishing is from the bank. i look for anything underwater that doesnt look normal. like a dark patch in the water could mean an underwater rock or stump or piece of wood. pay attention to whats around the shore and in the shallowest water on the bank. is it rocky, muddy, leafy, grassy. if you start pulling in grass, youve found an underwater grass bed, now try finding the edges of it or possible pockets in it, fish the transition points. i do a lot of fishing off my uncles dock at Smith Mtn Lake. last year i went in october and the water was much lower than i had seen it since ive been fishing off this dock. i took pictures of the land thats usually underwater. now i know that much more about the structure and cover of the area around the dock. located a couple stumps and large rocks i didnt know existed. fish could hold to these things. with bank fishing you dont have to learn the whole lake, just the area youre fishing. if its a smaller pond, then try to learn as much as you can about it...
  6. this is one of those things where it bothers me or it doesnt based on one criteria. If its a repeat topic of something older then it doesnt bother me. but if i see two threads that are 3 posts apart with the same topic then it gets irritating, i feel like the mods should merge those threads into one. like ive seen 3-4 posts on the first page of the rod forum asking what a good drop shot rod is.
  7. i wont hesitate to leave a hook in a turtle lol. im not going nowhere near those big ones with horns sticking out of their heads, all hissing at me and such. one night me and my bro in law were fishing off my uncles dock at smith mountain lake. we kept catching the same giant turtle over and over for awhile. didnt matter the bait(nightcrawlers, live bluegill, cutbait bluegill) this guy kept on eating our baited hooks and we kept on cutting the line. it would be like "i got a nice one on" then like "dangit, i think its that turtle again"...by the time we gave up on fishing due to his presence, the turtle had like 8 or 9 hooks stuck in him.
  8. i dont even think it was the first season. i think the first episode was when child services were trying to take bobby from hank and peggy...
  9. i dont buy into the if they see you its game over thing either. at times that may be true though. but i fish a shallow clear water pond sometimes. the fish clearly see me, yet they still take my lure in and get caught. they dont scatter when i walk right up to the edge of the bank either
  10. to each their own, i can respect that...
  11. really it is all about personal preference, and i will leave it at that. im just not one to cry or get mad every time someone removes and keeps a bass from a body of water. so long as its legally harvested, then its their right...
  12. haha, i, myself, have no problems using live bait especially if i cant buy a bite on artificial. i understand if its a tournament, you have to use artificial. but just fun fishing, i wont hesitate to throw live bait. i dont feel any more accomplished catching them one way or the other. if someones preference is to not use live bait, thats fine. but then theyre not using all the methods available to them to catch fish. i just like to catch fish, if theyre snubbing my artificials, i will throw a nightcrawler to start catching them. but then again, ive been snubbed using live bait too, its not full proof, but it gives me another option as well...
  13. i know many of you insist on using artificial only. but thats the perfect time to use the Fish Chris method and toss out a live nose-hooked nightcrawler with a small split shot up the line if that. its nearly impossible for them to resist...
  14. how do you know what i have and havent seen? i've seen plenty of mounts, replicas all look extremely fake to me. i think youre confusing my stance here to begin with. while replicas look nice, they dont look real at all. when i say replicas look fake, it doesnt mean its because of poor quality in the work. it means they just dont look real. its just my personal preference. last year i took a tour of a highly recommended taxidermists house on Smith Mountain Lake. His work was unreal, it was amazing. He had a replica on his wall of the perry bass that he did, it was nice work. Then he showed me a skin mount of another bass, and i liked the look of it so much better. It looked like it had just come out of the water, while the perry replica which was excellent work didnt have that same look though
  15. but it totally lacks in other channels, for that reason i would not recommend it to anyone. i can live without WFN, because i get better all around programming on Directv...
  16. what you must realize is the fishing shows are seasonal on outdoor channel, pursuit, sportsman channel, and nbcsports. Around February and March you will start to notice fishing shows coming back on more and more. and near the end of the summer you will start to notice less fishing and more hunting. thats just how it seems to work out, been that way for years... dishnetwork couldnt pay me to switch to them, i hate dishnetworks. directv is better far and away. seriously though, who actually watches poker on tv? smh
  17. skin mounts look like a real fish to me. replicas look like a shiny plastic fish thats mass produced and sold at walmarts and outdoorsman stores around the world. they just dont look real to me no matter who does them, every replica ive seen also has this thing with the colors appearing to be too bright, never seen that with a skin mount. even WRBs 19.3 replica, looks nice and all, just not real looking. at the end of the day, its up the individual who caught the fish to decide what to do with it, i wont fault anyone for choosing to keep any fish so long as its a legal catch. but im not paying anyone hundreds of dollars to put together a fish model kit for me and paint it when in the end it looks no better or worse than something i could get for 20 bucks at walmart...
  18. 1. if i catch a fish i want to have mounted, im mounting the real thing. I like the look of a skin mount much better than a fake looking replica. replicas just dont do it for me, i can get a replica without ever having caught a fish in my life. 2. if its an illegal fish, im throwing it back regardless of if its dying or not. i dont eat fish anyways, so its no loss to me. nature will run its course and take care of the dead fish...
  19. He is slowly getting back to form. any player coming off an injury like that is going to take a few games to feel comfortable again. as for the eagles game, we basically gave yall that game with a rash of 1st half blunders. plus no one knew what to expect with chip kellys offense. he had an excellent opening game script, i will give him that. but come the 2nd half none of that was working. and i forget which game it was, but once i seen Kelly run the swinging gate play, ala jim zorn, i knew he was a joke at the nfl level. he will be just like steve spurrier was...im fully confident the 2nd meeting will go much different... RG3 was definately the best rookie on the team last year. having a playmaking QB can make all the difference in the world. That said, RG3 was saying he did want to play in the preseason, if you got that much coverage then you would know that. everyone knows RG3 was not happy with Shanahans plan to hold him out of preseason and he also complained he wasnt getting enough work in practice and wanted to do more. Once he fully trust his knee, he will be back to making big plays on the regular, to call him below average is highly laughable. to do so and not acknowledge he is coming off a knee injury is even more laughable. Yall can call him a diva if you want, just remember that NFL divas are typically some of the most explosive players in the game at their positions as well(excluding the odd player like freddie mitchell, yall eagles fans should know something about him)...
  20. i keep hearing from a friend about a nice spot over in shepherdstown ive been wanting to try out. im not too proficient in river fishing but i want to learn more about it. i just want to get into some of them nice smallmouth i remember catching as a kid at Point Of Rocks...
  21. i agree. but i dont believe in search baits to begin with, you can throw a so called "search bait" all day and never get a bite because its not what the fish want, doesnt mean there arent fish around...
  22. first, learn there is no such thing as a true search bait...
  23. as a Redskins fan, i love seeing the giants 0-6. the Giants no longer can find some stupid false sense of motivation like they did the years they won their last 2 super bowls. constantly trying to play the "no one respects us" card dont get them up no more. also, Mara may have cursed the Giants. With him being the driving force behind those bogus cap penalties for the cowboys(10 million) and Redskins(36 million). The league admitted both teams did nothing wrong, all contracts were approved by the nfl executive committee. Mara was ticked the cowboys and redskins refused to collude with the rest of the league in the uncapped year. so yeah, its great to see the giants falter down the stretch last year and start off horrid this year.
