I'm in love
I've been a Garcia user for nearly 35 years but let's face it, up until the Revo, their selection of LP style reels has been a joke. Garcia was one of the first with mag braking in the early 80's. Their system was in use on their LP reels for many years and the mag braking on the pfluegers and BPS line of reels is merely a variation of that same design. For some reason though, they failed to put it on these reels and instead, went with this linear mag brake. That linear mag brake isn't new. It was previously used on the 4007LP, a reel that had only the mag brake AND NO SPOOL TENSION ADJUSTMENT! The spool tension was built into the linear mag brake assy. What a joke. The point? If you're going to put out a REVOlutionary reel, go with the best you've got. If the reel is to have only mag braking then it better be good. The linear mag brake isn't. I fished 2 tournaments last Aug/Sept that both turned out to be rather windy. I had also picked up a couple of Johnny Morris Sig reels to try out. Dual braking aside. The centrifugal braking on those reels was more reliable and consistent that the SX or STX's. Heck, even my Revo S reels were more consistant casters. (I still own 2 S reels) As the days went on I found myself wondering why I was messing with the SX and STX reels along with the overruns. It wasn't worth it. I've since switched to Pflueger Patriarchs. The reels are nearly identical to SX or STX on the crankplate side, they're completely different on the palm side. Garcia should look to that reel to improve theirs.

I'm in love
Micro, You're right and I came back to delete my post, but it was already copied. I guesse we're all bored tonight. Regarding "dedicated": I fish 1/2 oz jigs + trailer ~ 3/4 oz. Heavy lures have a dramatic effect on all aspects of a reel's casting performance. With 3/4 oz, nothing is subtle. Other impressions: The STX is beautiful, solid and strong. Ergonomics are outstanding, especially for palming the reel. I would like everything about the reel if (when) Abu Garcia changes the braking system. As Mircro has noted on other occasions, spending time working with the reel will resolve problems for most fishermen. I just don't want to have to fight with a reel or any of my equipment. 8-) I can agree with that....even the Skeet Reese model with it's centrifugal brakes needs an upgrade. I had pretty much decided I wanted two of these reels before I took off the sideplate and saw Abu's version of centrifugal brakes. They just seemed cheap; and I'm mostly a Daiwa guy. I guess my 'homer' opinion is that I like centrifugal brakes in general, but if a reel has magnetic brakes....it better be Daiwa's Magforce V or Z. So the $200 + Skeet Reese reel is using those cheapo Revo S centrifugal brakes? : Amazing, Garcia has Pflueger as a partner in the Pure fishing empire, I don't understand why they're not going with the more tried and true Centrifugal braking system or even the mag brakes Pflueger uses on most of their reels. Those garcia brakes are chintzy. When you lock the the pins down they never really feel like they've locked into place.

I'm in love
I'm another that's moved on to better equipment. The STX has a lot of great features and would still be on some of my rods (as well as the SX) if not for the achilles heel on that reel, the braking system. I'm on the water to enjoy myself, not fiddle with a temperamental fishing reel. Redesign the braking system and I'll be a Revo SX/STX customer again. Until then I've got a much better reel and for less.

Carbon fiber TM prop anyone??
Indy cars are made of carbon fiber. Have you seen what happens to an Indy car when it hits the wall? It disintegrates into a bunch of little pieces.

Updated pics of the Glasstream
To say the least. Drop a lure and spend 10 minutes trying to extract it without ripping up the carpet. Looks good otherwise. Definitely get rid of the wood cover on that in-floor ski compartment. That looks so 70's.

4th Annual BassResource.com Roadtrip!!!
So far Tuesday is filled in my boat. I'll be taking Burley off Scotts hands for a day. Sat/Sun is a probable for SMFisher. That still leaves Mon, Wed, Thurs and Fri AM. More great news. I'll have my new stereo installed and I've decided to give out my playlist for the week. Saturday I'll be playing "All the best of the Potsville Pennsylvania Polka Quartet." Sunday is my Tribute to Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. Monday I'll have "The Very Best of John Teshe" Tuesday, Burley will be swinging his hips and brake dancing to the Bee Gees! Wednesday is Slim Whitman day. Thursday I'll have a rare recording of Bill Dance and Roland Martin singing popular Love Songs of the 60's. Friday the MP3 gets put into the random mode. Don't be surprised to hear everything from Broadway musicals to Trance music. It's a potpourie of fun. This should tempt some fishermen now.

new rick clunn baitcaster
I had no idea they had the dual braking system....The Pflueger Patriarch has this system and it is virtually limitless as to the settings....completely customizable to your personal style. The Patriarchs centrifugal brake is great on it's own and can cast a mile without the magnetic brake at all The Morris reels out the past 2 years have the same dual braking as the Patriarchs but IMO, the Patriarch is a superior reel. This is coming from someone who owns 6 Patriarchs and 4 JM sig series reels. The Morris reels, nice as they are are big and rather heavy. It looks like they've gotten the Titanium deposition finish fixed as well as previous versions of the Johnny Morris reels would tarnish after a couple years of usage. Still a very good reel though.

Minnkota Power Drive TM
The power drives are a good idea, they've just never advanced the technology beyond what they started with. It took them years to correct the poor stow and deploy system yet the slow head turning speed still plagues those units. Lot's of potential that's never gotten refined IMO.

Table Rock Pre & spawn Colors
I normally use translucent colors. Watermelons, amber colors, smoke, etc. when the water is clear. If it's off color which it can be up in the James, then I go with darker colors like pumpkins, cinnamin, Another color I've had good luck with there is sour grape in French Fries. The Aunts Creek arm is one of the best on the James.

Baitcast Reels
I used a few Garcia Silver max reels, the one above the Black Max. They are very free spooling reels that cast fairly easily but the braking system isn't the best, especially for a newbie trying to learn. You'll need a softer tip rod to throw baits down to 1/8oz in order for the lure to even begin to load up the rod for casting. I'd definitely suggest using a heavier bait, 3/8 - 1/2oz and practice with that till you get the feel down right. As stated, set the spool tension knob so you have to jiggle the rod tip to get the lure going. Crank the mag brake control to max. As you start to get the feel of the reel as you cast you can slowly back off the mag control. About 50% is as low as I'd go on that reel. You can also back off the spool tension so the bait slowly falls when you hit the thumbar spool release and then stops when it hits the ground. Remember when casting a baitcaster, the reel handle should be pointed upwards when casting. This allows for the maximum amount of wrist action which is where a lot of your casting success and distance come from.

HUGE FISH KILL AT MAUCH CHUNK LAKE PA
Wow. I googled up the lake. Very pretty and at 330 acres a major fish kill is surprising. Any ideas as to what happened?

My wife must have messed something up
Sounds like she's trying to soften your wallet up for Valentines day next week. Better sell off some of those reels you've been buying.

BPS REELS
I clicked on your link muddy and started reading some of the reviews. I loved this one. "i had this reel for about 5 months and only used it about 15 times and about 2 days ago i was casting and i didn't drop my reel or anything.....and all of a sudden on the next cast the gears where totally messed up....before it got totally messed up it was a great smooth reel." ;D

Old tackle that really worked
Rebel came out with a crankbait in the early 70's called the Super R. It got reviewed in Bassmaster mag. Great bait though I lost my last one several years ago. Strike Kings Timber King spoon with the buzz blade in the front. A takeoff on the Rex spoon buzzer which is still sold today by Rex spoons who are still in business. BPS Uncle Bucks buzzer. An in-line buzzer that's been around a long time. One of the best buzz baits for buzzing holes in matted milfoil and hydrilla. Original Wiggle Warts. While I can't say that the old WW's catch more fish for sure, I can say the color selection available back then was far more extensive than today. The Lunker lure. Properly tuned, this bait is as good a buzz bait as any.

how about a review section?
ah , i wasnt aware of that. it just seemed that way. but like i said , it was just a thought. It's not a bad thought. I've brought it up before. It would certainly be a place for someone to go to first when thinking about purchasing a specific reel or rod.
-
no specific reel brand
Yep. As someone who's sold many reels, new and used, it really comes down to personal taste. Which reel brand feels best on the rod to you. Which manufacturer makes the features you like. Which reel looks the best to you. Otherwise, stick with the name brands and you shouldn't have a problem with quality or reliability.

BPS Pro Qualifier?
I believe this reel was talked about in another thread. The reel is very Revoesque looking. In fact, I'm betting it's built on the same frame. Note the thumbscrew side plate release. This particular reel has the dual braking which becomes very easy to get used to. I would definitely say it's worth the money but like all BPS rods and reels, I'd wait till it goes on sale which they always do.

TM plug-in
If you open up a typical TM, the wiring inside is only 8 or 10 gauge wire. The same goes for the wiring guts of a typical foot control pedal assy. Using 6 gauge is advantageous when you're talking about long runs of wire from the back to the front of the boat. At some point though the wire gauge must be scaled back due to the extreme thickness of 6 gauge wired and it's stiffness.
