  1. I thought that Japan had the world record bass, I believe there is a youtube video of it. Something to think about in Japan Bass are to be killed or at least most people consider them an invasive and destructive species, while yes they are invasive I am not sure on the destructive part. With this said they are an apex predator and because of this Bass took total control of its environment, plenty to eat, long growing season, apex predator, could happen in a small private lake and or pond here in the US. They grew to this length while constantly being caught and killed by man, imagine as Bass fishing becomes more like here in the US with catch and release I think Japan may be tough to beat.
  2. Anyone own one, do you like it, is it worth the coin? I used to own a canoe and I was about as stable as Reliant Robin, are they stable? How will they fit a very tall and large person such as myself?
  3. Love the Senkos and like the Yum Dingers, caught a ton of fish on both, but I will say Robo Worm 4" because I like the finesse and action of this worm.
  4. How large and in what state/part of the world is the world record holder? I have limited access to the internets at work.. I would say ponds can hold some big fish and when you think about an apex predator like a bass in a large pond all it can do is grow, if food is there to support it..
  5. My go-to baits if bass are feeding on top are Pop-R and a BuzzBait. Now if you know where the bass are then a Pop-R for sure, if you need to locate them a BuzzBait might work quicker. Once you weed out the active ones I would change over to a crank bait KVD 1.0 Sexy Shad and hold on..
  6. Wasn't there a mass die off this year, I believe my wife told me about it? Maybe it wasn't even smallies?
  7. When ice is on I stay away, our river system rarely freezes but I do lol..
  8. Fixed it last night, thanks for the help, I think on my higher end reels I will be taking pictures as well lol...
  9. Man you know your reels, but 3660 is whats clicking, when I disable anti reverse it goes away and I didn't take 2283 out so that piece shouldn't have moved, right?
  10. Maybe, do you own this reel, this is an old reel, its probably 22+ years old and I can see the part clicking, the only thing that made it stop was the mud/sand caked onto this par, once I cleaned this it clicked.
  11. Learning experience for me and I used a reel that I don't fish with so it wasn't any loss if it didn't get put back together, but yes I in the future for an unknown reel I will have a schematic on my screen. It wasn't until the next day I thought about the schematics that come with a Shimano and lucky enough for me someone had one online for it. What really bothered me about the reel was it would click on every turn and it didn't do that before, I assumed I put it back wrong, but really I cleaned it and it worked like it did in the past so long ago, I just didn't remember it clicking lol, even with a lot of grease on that part it still clicks, long story but I had dropped this reel in the bay when I was crabbing with my family when i was young and had thought that I lost it, I caught it on another reel hours later and it was full of sand it still worked and I cleaned it then to the best of my abilities so mud was caked around this part and made it so the reel wouldn't click, interesting story, really..
  12. I fall under the category of why pay for a service that I could do myself, all respect to others whom made a career out of this as I made a career out of this thought process, albeit a very different career. Back to my point of a learning lesson for me, first I would like to thank Gene for the inspiration so to speak of wanting to try reel maintenance. My second reel tear down was a shimano syncopate 2000, I followed Gene’s logic of a teardown and it worked well, I was thinking about taking pictures as well but that’s time consuming. The tear down was going well until I had a tiny plastic part that I knew what order it was in but wasn’t sure how it went back in, well another reason why I love Shimano as they make awesome schematics and turns out my location was right, with this and Gene’s method I was able to tear down this reel and a older stradic and did a full service and man that stridic is now butter smooth. My next tear down will be an old Calcutta, wish me luck.. So when in doubt track down the schematics, because no one had anything on you tube about these older reels. Another tip Shimano has many a guides on their site that applies mainly to newer models but still can be helpful for a tear down gone wrong.
  13. When I was a young lad I was hooked on the banjo minnow, didn't do much for me, that was when I was in a slugo craze and wanted something with more action, lol..
  14. Smallmouth for sure, 7#s of "raw" power, in a river man that would be a crazy battle.. I caught a somewhat big LM and it was nothing compared to a 4# smallie in the river... I fish in fast, ultra clear water, wadding in 3-5 feet and if a smallie like that ran I be swimming after it for sure, like Jeremy wade..
  15. My last outing was at a pond it was my fist time at this pond, never seen it before. Water was down over 6 feet, they drained it for some unknown reason. It was a cold cloudy morning and I needed to locate the bass, I went for a buzzbait because I know that this lure will tell me where the bass are and how active they are. It was a decent sized pond maybe the same size as a football field so the fish could be holding anywhere. I caught a few here and there and finally keyed in on the point that came out into a channel that feed into the other side of the pond, the wind was blowing perfectly down this channel up against this point and the fish all keyed on this. Caught 7 fish on that buzzbait and I saw what they were doing and how they wanted the bait, doing this(adapting to what fish want) has made me such a better fisherman give the bass what they want, it amazes me how simple an idea this is and when you implement it, the payoff is big. So they wanted the buzzbait slow almost underwater. I was thinking that there is a better bait, maybe a spinner bait, but the water was clear and I could see a grassy bottom maybe 3-5’ down, so I thought crankbait, fairly slow and holly crap, 35 fish in less than two hours, my first 10 cast I caught 10 fish and that’s a record for me, it was crazy. I did catch a few bass outside of this zone but the bulk of my bass where in a 20 foot zone, and I was able to watch 40% of my bites, it was such a cool learning experience that I will never forget. The bass were all decent size for this pond one less than a pound most in the 1.5-2.5 pound range, thank you KVD 1.0 sexy shad.. The point is, locate, adapt to what the fish want and have fun, to me the hardest part of fishing from a bank is locating those fish..
  16. Finesse presentations, smaller lures, love jerkbaits and pop-rs, my home lake fish cant resist my pop-r presentation..
  17. I own both and prefer the veritas, its lighter and more sensitive. I will say QC on Abu side needs to be address with these rods, mine came in and the epoxy was cracked, I sent it back without any issues and this new one looks much better. I have read with numerous people having issues with the veritas rods.. St Croix makes a better quality rod and i think my next may be an avid but then your not comparing apples to apples.
  18. Man that's rough, I hate loosing fish because of poor judgement call, funny you tell this story because I notice a burr in my line just the other day and retied course I didn't catch anything but if I did......
  19. Think of how many baits that catch a ton of fish that have no eyes, or lures that look like they are from another world that catch bass, can eyes matter, perhaps. To prove this scientifically would be a cool experiment and I don’t mean your co-angler used eyes and you didn't, too many variables.
  20. I agree if it works, however with that being said experiment and see if anything works better, try a leader with your braid, try mono, try flouro, take advantage of the properties of said lines, learn something new and see what happens. With that being said I feel using braid with a jerkbait works against me, that is what I have learned.
  21. I have seen packages marked as delivered and it went to my neighbor, has this person checked with his neighbors? Stolen to me sounds like an scam, your telling me this is the first time an item was stolen and it happened to be this 200+$ reel, hmmmm? Was it sent to a bad area? Confirm his address and do a google map and see what kind of area he lives in. Chances are if its a nice area I would almost put stolen out of the equation. Could be held up at a local location sometimes delivered just means delivered to a post office location as well, did he call local post office/ups, of course they normally leave a note and maybe that was blown away? I have allot of experiences with delivered items and NEVER has a package been stolen, my father in law does ebay again never a stolen item, its a federal offense to steal mail I just cant see the average person in the average location making that choice.
  22. As I understand it and depending on the location of the ball bearing it will increase the "smooth" feel, quietness and longevity of certain parts. I would suggest go to BPS, Gander MTN and or Dicks and try each reel out and see if you can tell and which feels better, I forget I have big hands and to some this reel might be to big.. I have always heard more ball bearings means better but also think it depends on the location. I know there are some reel experts "lol pun" on this forum that would be able to answer this question better then I. SirSnookalot, I don't know if we are talking apples to apples here, a 4000 size reel is much different then a 2000-2500, maybe there is a point of no return, meaning you basically eliminate the spool as being a factor in the 4000 size range?? Or maybe it was the lure used?? My experiment and I just tried it over the course of the last few months, used the exact same lure a 1/8 ounce spider jig, fishing the exact same location going much further with different reels and the furthest being the Sahara.. The reason why I did this was as a bank fisherman I couldn't hit a certain hole with my Stradic, I could with the Saraha and newer Stradic and came close but not right with the lews..
  23. To OP: I really don't think you will be disappointed with a Shimano Reel, the Sahara great reel like I said just a bit heavier then a Stradic, and when it comes down to it at a certain point weight reduction is where the extra money is going. SirSnookalot: The reel has allot to do with distance and I mean allot, same rod, the exact same lure and same # test using mono. Using Different reels and I can cast much, much further depending on the reel. Let me break it down Shimano Stradic 2000 [Original made in Japan] Lews Speed Spin comparable to a 2000 Shimano Sahara 2500 Shimano Stradic 2500 Guess which one casts the farthest?? In order Shimano Sahara 2500 casts the greatest distance Shimano Stradic 2500 close call and with fireline I would say it may cast further, however with fire line on the Sahara I think the Sahara will still win. Lews Speed Spin comparable to a 2000 Shimano Stradic 2000 [Original made in Japan] So the original Stradic casts the least distance, odd you might think, howerver not really its a 2000 for one and just looking at its spool design compared to the Sahara, has a much wider spool, thinner metal lip and perhaps even slippery metal lip, it’s a casting machine.
